How Do You Keep Diabetes Logs?

One of the most important self-management skills is keeping logs of health-related information. Do you do that? What do you keep records of? Are you consistent with logging, and does it help? I’m working a lot these days with people newly diagnosed with Type 2. I believe logging will help them understand how their bodies work and what affects their diabetes, but maybe I’m wrong. How can I help them start with logging, and should I? What should they log, and how can they do that? I’m asking for help because logging is a skill I’m terrible at. I trust my memory on things like what I ate, how far I could walk, how many times I fell, etc. It never works. Two months later, who can accurately remember what supplements they were taking or how many days they did their stretching exercises? You’re just guessing most of the time, so you might miss important patterns that a good log would show. Most people with diabetes, if they monitor at home, at least record their blood glucose results. But do you also record what you ate, your activity, what medications and supplements you took? Do you keep track of how you feel, your energy levels and symptom levels? When you think about it, you could log so many different parts of your life. It all might be helpful, but it’s also a lot of energy and time spent. I can’t imagine many people doing it all. Do you think it’s worth doing, or even possible? If you keep logs, how do you do it? I just use a big notebook and write down things that I think of, but I’m sure it would be better to be more orderly. There are diabetes logs for computers and apps for cell phones. This diabetes tracking spreadsheet allows you to track the foods you eat and the glucose levels from your testing. By tracking both the food and the glucose readings, you can look back to see what effected your blood sugar levels. Knowing how your diabetes reacts to certain foods can help you control the glucose levels. In addition to the food tab and the glucose tracking tab, there is an instructions tab in the spreadsheet. Food Tracker Tab To record your foods, simply type in the food item description and any nutrition information you want to track. The nutrition columns include calories, fat, protein, carbs, sugars and fiber. There are additional columns that are formulas. Depending on what information you input, these will calculate the proper values. These additional columns are net carbs, WW Pts and Pts Plus. The net carbs is a calculation using carbs - fiber to give you the net carbs. The Weight Watchers points formulas use the calories, fat and fiber (for original points) and fat, carbs, fiber and protein for the plus system. So if you are a member and want to know the points, you must input all the nutrition information. If you do not have fiber available, just use zero for this nutrient. Glucose Tracker Tab On this tab of the diabetes tracking spreadsheet, you can track up to four weeks of glucose testing. There are a lot of different log sheets out there, but the best, in my opinion, is one developed by Jean-François Yale, M.D., Associate Professor of Medicine, Crabtree Nutrition Laboratories, McGill Nutrition and Food Science Centre, Royal Victoria Hospital, and Director, Metabolic Day Centre. I met with him in Montreal in August 2002, and at that time he authorized me to make his log sheet available on my Web site. For this, I will use MS Word 2003 as its actually easier. If you can get how I do it in 2003, you'll be able to see how I do it in 2007. Its just better graphics Comment (to describe whatever... like what i ate or what activities i did) Daily and Weekly BG Average (requires manual insertion of formula and checking whether the values they use are from the correct cells) So here's some steps to create a chart with your own bg log: 1. Highlight the data area. Obviously you can't highlight the comments as its not numerical. So one way to just highlight it one shot is to rearrange the columns and put the comments at the end. But if you're doing it like me with a gap in the middle... highlight the area for the first 3 columns first. After that, press and hold the CTRL button and highlight the other areas that you want to include in the chart 2. Now you have the area highlighted, go to Insert and click Chart 3. The chart wizard will appear. Select Line and Chart Type (whichever type you want). Click NEXT 4. Step 2 will appear.
