At The Crossroadsa New Culture Of Learning
At the CrossroadsA New Culture of Learning I am not a teacher. I just want to get that out there. I am not a teacher by state standards anyway. But as a diabetes educator I certainly do teach. In fact, that is one of the reasons I became an educator to teachto shareto ideally change the world. I dare say if I asked my teacher friends they would share that same passion. Today I am asked to think about how I could change the current culture of learning. After reading A New Culture of Learning by Thomas and Seely Brown (2011) I have many ideas. My thoughts however are outside the classroom. They begin 28 years ago in a hospital intensive care unit. A family has just been told their child has Type 1 Diabetes. As they try to comprehend the newsthe family is already receiving information. Personal content: *Diabetes?Patients dads Grandma died from Diabetes. Family Sources: Remember little Billy from the neighborhood? He had diabetes and couldnt have cookies. Your daughter wont be able to have any sugar or candy. No Halloween trick or treating for your daughter. It will take about 10 years before she suffers from kidney disease and other complications. Diabetes means my child will have to have shots for the rest of her life. This is hard and scary. Life will never be normal. Standard Medical Information Content: The family will receive instructions from the educators and physicians at the hospital. They will go home and read the information pamphlets and a book about Pink Panthers and Diabetes. The family will follow the doctors instructions and meet with the educators for more learning every 3 months. Occasionally they will run into a family in the waiting room who also has a child with diabetes, and they share stories and bits of information. The family will continue in thi Continue reading >>

Health Games: A Fun Way To A Healthy You!
CHIDS introduced me to the world of health games. As I research more about health games and their application to the world of diabetes specifically Type 2 Diabetes, I am getting more intrigued by them. How can games video games or some other simple games say trivia help people manage their diabetic condition better? Before we jump into the games let me explain a bit about Diabetes. Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases in which a person has high blood sugar, either because the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or because cells do not respond to the insulin that is produced. Today there are 25.8 million diabetics in US alone or roughly 8% of the population and its prevalence is growing. Its broadly categorized as Type 1 Diabetes and Type 2 diabetes.Type 1 diabetes is mainly hereditary while type 2 diabetes is more of a lifestyle disease. A few of the causes of Type 2 Diabetes include obesity, lack of physical activity, poor diet, stress and urbanization. Resonates with your day to day living?Thats exactly where health games come into picture. Today all of the age groups are running after their goals and in the process are neglecting their health. The definition of relaxation is no longer a game of football or running, but it has changed to video games and television. Add to it the colas and pizzas that come along with this relaxation. As a result, the population is getting more obese. In 2010, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported higher obesity numbers, counting 35.7% of American adults as obese, and 17% of American children. Thats a direct vulnerability to diabetes as stated above. Hence, finding ways to combat this trend such as with health games become all the more important. Video games appeal to a large chunk of population youth Continue reading >>

The Diabetic Dog Game Lesson Plans And Lesson Ideas | Brainpop Educators
In this game, students learn about diabetes by caring for a dog who has the disease. Their mission is to avoid letting the dog reach levels of blood sugar that are too high or too low. The more successful they are, the more money they'll earn for buying food and upgrading the dog's food bowl or doghouse. We recommend using the game as an independent or partner activity during your instruction on blood sugar and healthy eating habits. The Diabetic Dog Game is based on the Nobel Prize-winning work of Frederick Banting and John Macleod, who discovered the hormone insulin in the early 1920s. Their research made it possible to effectively treat people and animals suffering from diabetes.
