No Shame In Admitting You Have Diabetes

No Shame In Admitting You Have Diabetes

Endorsement: Sir Steve Redgrave who is honorary president of Diabetes UK and suffers from the condition. Below: Dr Vijay Bangar, who is based at Calderdale Royal ONE in three people with diabetes could be risking their health by keeping their condition a secret. The survey has been carried out by leading health charity Diabetes UK among sufferers in the Yorkshire and Humber region. Tailor made treatments: Dr Vijay Bangar who is based at Calderdale Royal Worryingly 35 per cent of diabetics felt they were unable to talk about their illness and nearly half of those surveyed admitted that keeping it a secret had impacted on how they managed their condition. But in Calderdale help and support is at hand thanks to the diabetes unit based at Calderdale Royal Hospital. Here there is a dedicated team which includes lead clinician in diabetes, Dr Vijay Bangar, consultant Dr Abdu Mousa, four specialist diabetes nurses including Angela Sealeaf as well as specialist dieticians - all of whom can help, advise and reassure patients. It is all about educating patients about diet, exercise and lifestyle and finding effective treatments, explains Angela. Its very important to come up with a programme that suits the individual. Vijay agrees. One size does not fit all so having tailor-made treatment is essential. He adds that new treatments have been coming out, particularly over the past five years or so and it is important to keep abreast of these changes. Its important for the patient too to have all the information they need. I would encourage patients to join a group so that they can remain well informed. Education is all about prevention and if we can prevent further cases of diabetes developing then that is a job well done. Diabetes UK is now working hard to educate, inform and supp Continue reading >>

Felt an improvement almost immediately. 3 sessions and it was gone altogether in the space of a week. Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic Retinopathy

If you have diabetes, your eyes are at risk of damage from diabetic retinopathy, which can lead to sight loss if it's not treated. Eye screening is a key part of your diabetes care. Did you know? Selected Specsavers stores provide a range of eyecare services on behalf of the NHS to help maintain the health of the eyes. Because these services are delivered on behalf of the NHS, there is no cost to you. Ask your local store for details. What are the symptoms of diabetic retinopathy? In its early stages, diabetic retinopathy does not usually cause any noticeable symptoms, so you may not even know you have it. But screening can detect the condition before you notice any changes to your vision. If it is detected early enough, management of the condition can stop it getting worse. Otherwise, by the time symptoms become noticeable, it can be much more difficult to treat. Diabetic screening You should receive a letter from your local Diabetic Eye Screening Service inviting you to attend a screening appointment. The letter will include a leaflet about diabetic eye screening. The check takes about 30 minutes and involves examining the eyes and taking photographs of the retina to assess its health. Bring all the glasses and contact lenses you wear, along with lens solution for contacts. Contact your local screening service or your GP if you have not received a letter and your appointment is overdue. We’re partnering with Diabetes UK to help raise awareness and avoid preventable sight loss. Diabetic retinopathy does not usually cause any noticeable symptoms but advanced diabetic retinopathy can lead to loss of vision. If detected and treated early, most people will retain useful sight for life. Photographs from your check will be assessed by a number of specialists, including som Continue reading >>

Diabetes Centres | Diabetes Care Program Of Nova Scotia

There are currently 38 full-time and part-time Diabetes Centres (DCs) in Nova Scotia (funded by the Nova Scotia Health Authority and the IWK). These DCs provide programs and services for people with diabetes/prediabetes and their families. Many of these DCs extend their reach by offering programs and services at an additional 21 satellite sites. The DC teams: Provide referring physicians (generalists and specialists) and other health care providers with access to a complementary inter/multidisciplinary diabetes team. This team approach is essential in helping individuals with diabetes to understand and manage their disease. Access other disciplines, as available, for individuals in need (social worker, psychologist/trained mental health therapist, pharmacist, foot care clinic/specialist, etc.). Promote linkage to valuable community service providers and programs. In Nova Scotia, the approach to care and education has been standardized with the assistance of the Diabetes Care Program of Nova Scotia (DCPNS). The DCPNS ensures that these programs: Approach the care and education of adults, and other specialty populations, with diabetes in a consistent, standardized way through the use of standardized documentation and assessment tools, guidelines, and resource materials.
