Annual Innovation Summit
After four amazing years of hosting our revolutionary open innovation competition, the DiabetesMine Design Challenge , we launched a new chapter in our efforts to bring innovative thinking to the diabetes community: we hosted the first annual DiabetesMine Innovation Summit at Stanford University School of Medicine in Palo Alto, CA, in Fall of 2011. This intimate, invitation-only event is an unprecedented gathering of the various stakeholders involved in creating tools for life with diabetes: informed patient advocates, device designers, pharma marketing and R&D leaders, regulatory experts, clinicians, mobile health experts, web visionaries, experts from venture capital investment and innovation, and more. Over the past seven years, this Summit has helped kick off a new era of collaboration among these groups, and ignite a revolution in the world of designing tools for diabetes primarily by fostering best practices for keeping the actual users of these solutions (us patients!) central to the process. On Friday, Nov. 17 we held our 7th annual DiabetesMine Innovation Summit ( #dbminesummit17) at Stanford School of Medicine this year with a theme of Problem-Solving Our Healthcare. That is, given how healthcare has become so politicized and gridlocked of late, we chose to highlight novel problem-solving approaches in each of these areas, to inspire us all to go further: What a wonderful, important conference focused on real-life, pragmatic opportunities to improve patients lives! This is one of the best events weve been to in our 14 years of serving the diabetes community. Ive already connected with several of the attendees in the last week and hope to continue to problem-solve our healthcare together. John Henry, T1 advocate and founder of MyCareConnect Can you focus an en Continue reading >>

Tech Meets Diabetes, Diabetes Meetstech
How Amy Tenderich Breaks Down Barriers between Technology, Healthcare Providers, andPatients Last year, Amy Tenderich from DiabetesMine invited Better s Founder and CEO, Rachael Norman, to speak at the 2017 DiabetesMine Innovation Summit. The experience was so amazing that we wanted to learn more about DiabetesMine, how health insurance impacts the diabetic community and why Amy isnt waiting. Amy Tenderich is a leading advocate for the diabetic community and one of the events Amy hosts is the annual DiabetesMine Innovation Summit. That was how she heard about Better. The 2017 conference theme was problem solving our healthcare, #WeAreNotWaiting and she was searching for companies developing new solutions to existing healthcare problems. Several people in the Stanford community mentioned this organization called Better who are doing this amazing platform to help people with their insurance claims and we were like, Amy has her own claim to fame. In 2007, Amy wrote an open letter to Steve Jobs that went viral. She called for Apple (and all of Silicon Valley) to apply the same design skills to medical devices that Apple devoted to its consumer products. She wrote that the devices the diabetic community had to live with were stuck in a bygone era, created in an engineering-driven, physician-centered bubble. If insulin pumps or continuous glucose monitors had the form of an iPod Nano, people wouldnt have to wonder why we wear our pagers to our own weddings, or puzzle over that strange bulge under our clothes. [] They (the medical device industry) have not yet grasped the concept that medical devices are also life devices, and therefore need to feel good and look good for the patients using them 24/7, in addition to keeping us alive. Jobs never replied so Tenderich took the l Continue reading >>

My POV: The 2015 DiabetesMine Innovation Summit The holidays made for a crazy schedule. Here are my thoughts onat the 2015 DiabetesMine Innovation Summit. Ive followed the DiabetesMine Innovation Summit online since it's inception, and this year (thanks to receiving a scholarship from DiabetesMine,) I was able to fly cross country and attend the 2015 DiabetesMine Innovation Summit, on November, 20th, 2015. The summit brought together all the key game changers in the diabetes world in all dimensions. Patient Advocates who live with D 24X7, designers of current and future devices, clinicians, R&D, Pharma Marketing, regulatory, groovy tech gurus, and more! The agenda was jam packed and much of the focus centered on the major challenges of living with diabetes ( see amys slides, ) and usability factors being KEY. I LOVED that D patient challenges and usability in design took center stage! Topics addressed harnessing the creativity of patients; behavioral aspects of living with a D 24X7, patient life hacks, design aspects of D products, industry embracing the patient experience, getting the FDA onboard, and D tech, just to name a few. So much was discussed in what seemed like a very short amount of time and my head was spinning andstillis, but in a great way! And as the day flew by, my mind went back to the original Roche Diabetes Social Media Summit in 2009 - and how industry was hesitant to engage with patients and all things Social Media. Now, 6 short years later, things have changed dramatically and for the better. Patients and industry are working together and our diabetes voices are being heard! Some of the Speakers many talking points that have stuck in my head long after the conference ended, include: Chief Technology Officer of the U.S. Department of Health and Huma Continue reading >>

Diabetesmine Innovation Summit: Interview With Dr. Jennifer Shine Dyer, Md, Mph
DiabetesMine Innovation Summit: Interview with Dr. Jennifer Shine Dyer, MD, MPH Dr. Dyer is a pediatric endocrinology physician in private practice, social media enthusiast (@EndoGoddess), Stanford artificial pancreas researcher, and app developer/mobile health entrepreneur. With Duet Health (acquired by MedData Inc.), she developed the EndoGoddess App and the EndoGoal App. In collaboration with The Ohio State University College of Engineering and Computer Science, shes developed a ninja game for kids with diabetes. A few weeks ago, Dr. Dyer presented on gamification atthe2016 DiabetesMine Innovation Summit. One Drop had the privilege of talking with her about her impressions of the Summit, translating science to technology, and prescribing health apps. Making solutions is what energizes me! When you make solutions that are different than everything else, you can feel a little alone. I dont feel alone here. Im hearing some of the same messages Ive been preaching about what works and doesnt work. Dr. David Sobel was awesome! He talked about personalizing messages and finding out what matters the most to patients to improve quality of life. He gave really good suggestions Im going to incorporate in our practice. Ive been doing some of them, but not as organized as he presented. Im excited to incorporate those! How do you translate behavioral science into a technical product? First of all, people have to have readiness for change and confidence tochange. In a technology game, like the one Im releasing next month, I incorporated questions that ask users how ready they are for change and how confident they are that they can change. In my new game, users get points towards becoming a diabetes ninja for answering these questions. That way, we can see if these things are barri Continue reading >>

Diabetes Mine Innovation Summit
Home Lifestyle Diabetes Mine Innovation Summit Posted by Editorial Team On October 3, 2011 In Lifestyle On Saturday September 17, I participated in a remarkable event: the first ever Diabetes Mine Innovation Summit , held at Stanford University concurrently with the Health 2.0 Conference. Forty people attended the all-day, intensive interactive session facilitated by IDEO, one of the worlds leading design firms. Firms in attendance included Abbott, Agamatrix, Caleritas, DexCom, Johnson & Johnson, Medtronic, Sanofi-Aventis, and WellDoc. Advocacy groups included the JDRF and the ADA. Angel investors, venture capitalists, industrial designers, bloggers, healthcare professionals, and government employees rounded out the attendees. In my short time in the world of diabetes, this was probably the most valuable single day Ive spent so far (and Ive had some doozies!). The level of passion and insight and excitement was remarkable. Starting from a patient perspective led by blogger Bernard Farrell and a medical device industry perspective led by Medtronic alumna and incoming ADA chairman Karen Talmadge, we then heard from past participants in the design challenge about the ideation process they used to design Sleep Well, a bedside monitoring device. Teen ambassador Cory Oringer gave an excellent talk on his perspective and vision for the future as a teen living with type 1 diabetes. After lunch we broke into twelve teams to brainstorm designs based on customer needs. Each group of three gave a two minute skit demonstrating their ideas. These were very entertaining and creative, including dress-up role-playing and creative props. Fun was had by all. The most valuable part for me was not the formal sessions, but the discussions during coffee breaks and lunch. I got to meet fantas Continue reading >>

An Open Letter To Steve Jobs: Amy Tenderich Ten Years Later
An Open Letter to Steve Jobs: Amy Tenderich Ten Years Later Amy Tenderich is the founder and Editor-in-Chief of DiabetesMine, one of the oldest and most-respected diabetes blog sites. Ten years ago, she wrote an open letter to Steve Jobs about diabetes technology. The letter went viral and Amy turned that energy and feedback into an international crowd-sourcing competition called the DiabetesMine Design Challenge. That led to the influential annual DiabetesMine Innovation Summit , and a biannual meeting of tech developers called the DiabetesMine D-Data ExChange, which is happening again June 9. Stacey & Amy talk about what prompted her to write that letter and what she thinks has changed most since that time. Amy also shares her personal story, she was diagnosed as an adult in 2003, and explains what the D-Data ExChange is all about. Also this week, Stacey shares a follow-up about a previous Community Connection, Willls Way. We talk about getting diabetes gear to stick in the summer sweat and wet (listen to the episode referenced here) and get ready for Bike Beyond. Diabetes Connections is partnering with the folks at Beyond Type 1 to bring you stories from an epic cycling trip from NY to San Francisco. Diabetes Connections is now available as an app! We're sorry, an error occurred. We are unable to collect your feedback at this time. However, your feedback is important to us. Please try again later. This past week, our team has been in San Diego hosting the Summer 2017 DiabetesMine D-Data ExChange event, and then we headed straight into the big annual ADA Scientific Sessions happening there, of course. An exciting week all around... And not least of that is unveiling the results of our 2017 DiabetesMine Patient Voices Contest ! Now in our sixth year hosting this contest , we always enjoy getting to know the various applicants and reading about their ideas -- in this case for innovating locally. There are so many great, inspirational people in this community! We'd like to thank EVERYONE who entered the contest and supported this effort -- with a special shout-out to this year's guest judge, Polina Bryson. Polina is a psychologist and D-Mom whose daughter was diagnosed with T1D and Celiac in 2013. She's become an avid activist for both, writing at her blog, T1D and Gluten-Free . She talks a lot about the challenges of building a support system "that fully embraces and supports our entire family, as well as managing burnout for both (our) PWDs and us parents, as her caregivers." As a winner of this contest herself last year, Polina says: "It was an honor to participate in the 2016 DiabetesMine Innovation Summit . I was inspired by the passion and commitment of Summit attendees. It was a unique opportunity to learn from various stakeholders in the fields of diabetes healthcare, technology, research, and advocacy, and tohave a meaningful discussion on how to innovatively improve quality of life for all people with diabetes." This year's winners were once again chosen based on the combination of their ideas, passion, bac Continue reading >>

The 2016 Diabetesmine Summit Exploring Quality Of Life Innovations
diabetes mellitus , Health , innovation , Neuroscience , Patient , Quality of life Author: Amy Tenderich/Source: Healthline Can you focus an entire diabetes innovation event on Quality of Life? Yes, you can! In fact, its the stuff that builds the foundation for the ever-elusive improved health outcomes were all after. This was the premise behind the sixth annual DiabetesMine Innovation Summit ( #dbminesummit16 ) held on Oct. 28 at UC San Franciscos Mission Bay biotech campus. The Summit is a forum that brings together all of the various stakeholders informed patient advocates, device designers, pharma marketing and R&D leaders, regulatory experts, clinicians, mobile health experts, tech investors and more to explore a new change theme each year. Happiness, Habit-Building and the Healthcare Experience The day opened with a fascinating keynote by Dr. Kyra Bobinet , a Stanford physician behavior designer for health (who studied with behavior guru BJ Fogg), on the topic of The Quality of Life Connection: Happiness, Habit-Building and the Healthcare Experience. We invited Kyra to give this opening talk based on our belief that there are three vital components of success for patients: First basic well-being and happiness, without which no amount of devices or treatment plans can help. Second the overall experience that patients have with the healthcare system, and especially the tools and services they must use for their disease care (addressed in our Challenges Matrix ). Both of which if positive and productive allow patients to achieve the Third and vital component, establishing good lifelong Healthy Habits. Kyra took it to a whole new level with an exploration of the neuroscience behind well-being. She explained her research on the brain synapses involved in good feelings Continue reading >>

Meet Our Volunteers: Diabetesmine Scholars Divya & Sarah
Meet our volunteers: DiabetesMine Scholars Divya & Sarah Carb DM would not be the community that it is without the support of our volunteers. Many of our events require a lot of manpower; fortunately, there are many in the community who are willing and able to help. Our volunteers put in hours of effort to plan, set up, and run our events. We have started a Meet Our Volunteers blog post series to introduce readers to our volunteers. Its our small way of recognizing them and showing our appreciation! This months featured volunteers are Divya Gopisetty and Sarah Loebner, leaders of Carb DMs Dia-Buddies youth program . Overcoming challenges is a lot easier when you have the support of friends or mentors. Thats why there are career mentorships, big brother and big sister programs, AA sponsors, running buddies, and workout buddies. So why not Dia-Buddies? Thats the idea behind Dia-Buddies, Carb DMs youth mentoring program . Dia-Buddies brings together experienced T1D teens with newly diagnosed children, tweens, and teens in fun social settings. At each Dia-Buddies event, mentors organize and run a variety of activities, serving as role models for the mentees. Running the show are Divya Gopisetty and Sarah Loebner. As Dia-Buddies leaders, they wear many hats: planners, organizers, facilitators, teachers, and cheerleaders, all rolled into one. Thanks to theirenthusiasm and energy, teens and tweens with T1D can enjoy a fun day out and form connections that last a lifetime. Sarah was diagnosed with T1D in 2002 at the age of 9. She is a clinical research coordinator who plans to become a physicians assistant and certified diabetes educator. Sarah was a volunteer with a1 teens, Carb DMs youth program prior to Dia-Buddies. She and her mother Pam have also been speakers at Carb DMs Continue reading >>
