Jennifer Clark, diabetes educator and nurse practitioner at the University of Chicago Medical Center in Illinois, is sympathetic to people who may be seeking alternative treatments. I think people are concerned about being on a lot of medications, especially insulin , she says. Of course, cost is a primary concern, especially if youre taking several drugs. Despite health insurance coverage, many people have high deductible plans or steep copays. Theres also a stigma associated with taking medication, despite its benefits. Side effects of medication are another concern. Glucophage(metformin) , the first line diabetes drug, may cause stomach upset, yet the side effects tend to wear off with time, says Hayley Ball, CDE, a clinical pharmacist at Northeast Medical Group, part of Yale New Haven Health in Connecticut. Dialing For Diabetics

Dialing For Diabetics

En español | The phone at my home rang one recent Wednesday evening, and on the other end was a woman with exciting news for me: "You qualify to receive free diabetes supplies." Records identified me as having the condition, she said. She was calling from "downtown California" on behalf of the National Diabetes Association, a name she said so quickly that I might have confused it with the widely known American Diabetes Association. See also: Podiatrist swindles $1 million from Medicare. Her offer, of course, seemed less than authentic, and for two other reasons. First, I don't have diabetes. And second, she was addressing me by the fake name I use when I list my phone number in public directories — whenever I hear that name, I know right away the caller is a telemarketer looking for business. I played along. Her next statement was the final tip-off to a potential rip-off: "Before the supplies can arrive, I need to confirm your condition with your age, Social Security number and the name and phone number of your doctor." You should never give out personal identifiers like those. They can be used to steal your identity for financial fraud or to file false claims with Medicare or other insurers. The National Diabetes Association, whose business license is listed as "suspended" in California state online records, did not return telephone and email queries from Scam Alert. The organization operates at least two websites and describes itself as "a non-profit organization that aims to improve the diabetes management of the 24 million Americans affected by the disease." The American Diabetes Association would not comment on the sound-alike organization, but in February issued a statement about calls falsely being made in its own name. "We never ask an individual for personal Continue reading >>

How To Avoid Diabetes Scams - Red Flags And Advice

Diabetes is a disease that can cause you to have feelings of desperation and hopelessness. Unfortunately, there are people who would like to profit and take advantage of those feelings. Here is a list of some common diabetes scams, how to be smart, and what to look for to protect your pocket book as well as your health. If you know someone with diabetes who is not internet savvy, print out a copy of this information to help them know what to look out for. The internet is a great resource for research, community , and information about living with diabetes. However, it can also open the door for people who would like to take advantage of you. Scams can be found on websites, in email, on social networks, and in forums. The internet can also make it possible for others to reach you offline through postal mail and phone solicitations. We all hope to find a cure or perhaps discover a hidden miracle treatment. Some herbal or alternative remedies might actually help, but they are often not well-researched. Without that research there is not enough knowledge to make good dosage recommendations. We all have different circumstances, physiology, and lifestyles. What might work for one person might not work for you. Furthermore, without good study, there is not a lot of knowledge about any possible harmful effects, both immediate and long-term. People who are trying to scam you might rely heavily on personal stories, mention studies that have not appeared in reputable publications, or try to blind you with slick salesmanship. What Scammers Are After from People with Diabetes Most scammers are after your money, social security number, Medicare number, bank account and credit card numbers, financial information or a combination of these things. Diabetes Scams: Quack Cures And How To Avoid Them

Diabetes Scams: Quack Cures And How To Avoid Them

Diabetes Scams: Quack Cures and How To Avoid Them Got diabetes? No problem, now promise a vast array of web sites with bogus quick-acting cures. There are so many cure-alldiabetesscamsonline that the Food and Drug Administrationand Federal Trade Commission recently launched a campaign against these supplements, using a teaser site for the quack cure Glucobate . Below are great tips from the FTC for spotting these diabetes scams before you get stung: A promise that a product can cure diabetes is a tip-off to a rip-off. Theres no pill, patch, tea, herb, or other miracle treatment that can make diabetes go away forever. Ads that promise too much generally deliver nothing. Dont buy any product that claims it can do it all (stabilize your blood sugar, end your need for insulin, regenerate your pancreas, reduce your cholesterol, and cause easy weight loss). A product that claims to be a scientific breakthrough may be a bust. Genuine scientific discoveries make front-page news. If the first you hear about a new treatment is an ad on the Internet, be suspicious. Ads that try hard to sound scientific are suspect. Technical terms dont necessarily mean medical proof. And the presence of a doctor in an ad is no guarantee the product works. Dont be swayed by a questionable success story. Despite what the company claims, theres no guarantee that A.B. of Hometown, USA had the advertised results or is even a real person. A money-back guarantee does not prove that a product works. Scam artists who offer a guarantee have been known to take your money and run. If an ad for a product makes you curious, ask your healthcare provider about it before you try it or buy it. If youre thinking about trying something new, run it past a doctor, nurse, dietitian, or other health professional who kno Continue reading >>

Mike Huckabee And The Diabetes Cure He Endorsed That 'no Health Agency Supports'

Mike Huckabee And The Diabetes Cure He Endorsed That 'no Health Agency Supports'

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee is distancing himself from the unusual ways he earned money before announcing his White House run May 5, but journalists aren’t letting the former Arkansas governor off the hook. Huckabee, who shed about 100 pounds after being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, filmed TV and radio infomercials advertising a program to "reverse" diabetes in February and March. Huckabee also lent his email list to carry ads about a looming food shortage and a cancer cure found in the Bible. CBS’ Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer tried to pin Huckabee down on his business dealings during a May 10 interview that followed a critical column about "Huckabee’s Hucksterism" by National Journal’s Ron Fournier. Huckabee got testy as he explained the program he endorsed is more about healthy eating than dietary supplements. A bit later, Schieffer moved on to Fournier during a pundit panel discussion for a response. "As you know, there was more to that, and I really like the way you kind of put him on his heels and he had to filibuster you," Fournier said. "He -- his endorsing -- the infomercials that are endorsing cures and treatments that no health agency supports. He's linking cancer to cures to the Bible verse." In other words, he said, not very presidential behavior. PunditFact wanted to dig into Fournier’s claim about Huckabee’s past. Did he shill for a shoddy diabetes "cure" that "no health agency supports"? ‘Diabetes Solution Kit’ Fournier’s column references a March New York Times story about Huckabee’s "highly unconventional income streams." In a since-deleted video (though you can see one on the Daily Mail), Huckabee encouraged viewers to buy the Diabetes Solution Kit made by the South Dakota company Barton Publishing. The Murky World Of Secondhand Diabetic Test Strips

The Murky World Of Secondhand Diabetic Test Strips

Chelsea Arnold was getting into debt over tiny pieces of plastic: diabetic test strips. When Arnold was first diagnosed with diabetes she needed to test her blood sugar 10 times a day. She went to Wal-Mart and found that one box, which contained only a five-day supply of test strips, was $80. Arnold called her parents and told them she didn't know what to do. She didn't have the money. Arnold then did what a lot of people do when they need help: She searched on Google. She typed in the words "cheap test strips," and Craigslist came up. She bought eight boxes for less than $100. At Wal-Mart, she would have paid $640. Arnold said, "it was like having a life sentence and then realizing that there's a cure." With this Google search, Arnold stumbled into an underground economy for diabetic supplies. It's a market that offers a lower-cost option for test strips, though it is hard for customers to know where the boxes come from. Some boxes may be repackaged and unsafe to use, and some boxes are sold by diabetics who are desperate for cash. But many of them come from people who have health insurance and have accumulated extra test strips. Trey falls into this category. (He asked us not to use his last name, because he fears retribution from his insurance company, even though he feels he hasn't broken any laws.) He moved from one type of blood sugar monitoring system to another type of monitoring system and ended up with 20 extra test strip boxes. At that point, Trey began researching. He said, "Obviously No. 1: Is it legal to be able to sell test strips?" Trey realized that it is legal, with a caveat. "It's kind of a gray market as long as you don't get them from Medicare and Medicaid," he said. Trey then found a local buyer on Craigslist. It starts to look a little seedy here. 10 Answers - Is The Diabetes Destroyer A Scam Just Like Diabetes Free?

10 Answers - Is The Diabetes Destroyer A Scam Just Like Diabetes Free?

Is The Diabetes Destroyer a scam just like Diabetes Free? Absolutely. Here's why (taken from a question on Diabetes Destroyer ): We did a fair bit of research into this as our Facebook page is continually spammed with Diabetes Destroyer links via ClickBank. There's a few things that are concerning about it - and not just the name (they're not very specific about type!) - if you've seen the website, it's very spammy - it doesn't let you leave without 'confirming' for one thing - which is always dubious. The part that seals the spam-deal is that when you go to the website, a video plays and the first line is 'We are going to have to amputate your legs... today'. It follows with 'Each year, 11,000 People Saw Their Type 2 Diabetes Mysteriously REVERSED, But Even Their Doctors Couldnt Say Why'. It smells like a scam. $27 to destroy diabetes? Something is fishy. In reality, it's not going to 'destroy' T1D (just a pet annoyance that most sites don't distinguish - and adds to the spammy-factor). The crux is: if it was really going to help with T2D, it'd be informing people about low carb (and exercise) - and in reality, you can find that information online. We'd urge people to save that $27 (why $27?) and download the 7 Day LC Meal Plan and get support from the forum and see how that works out. The footer also notes 'ClickBank is the retailer of products on this site. CLICKBANK is a registered trademark of Click Sales, Inc., a Delaware corporation located at 917 S. Lusk Street, Suite 200, Boise Idaho, 83706, USA and used by permission. ClickBank's role as retailer does not constitute an endorsement, approval or review of these products or any claim, statement or opinion used in promotion of these products.' Again, slightly concerning. And finally - when exiting the site, it sh Continue reading >>

Texas Chiropractors To Cease Future Iowa Natural Diabetes Program Seminars

Texas Chiropractors to Cease Future Iowa Natural Diabetes Program Seminars Chiropractor with illegal consumer contracts refused $4,000 refunds to two older Iowans following Cedar Rapids Help Your Diabetes seminar DES MOINES Two Texas chiropractors who operate a traveling diabetes management program seminar will cease conducting their sales seminars in Iowa, after one refused to issue refunds of approximately $4,000 to two older Iowans who requested them. Through an agreement with Attorney General Tom Miller called an assurance of voluntary compliance, Dr. Jeffrey Murray Hockings, CEO, and Dr. Dean Elliot Draluck, president, of the Dallas-based Help Your Diabetes wellness program, have agreed not to conduct future diabetes management seminars in Iowa. The agreement also requires Hockings, of Colleyville, Texas, and Draluck, of Plano, Texas, to provide refunds to Iowans who request them. In December, Hockings conducted a Help Your Diabetes seminar at a Cedar Rapids hotel, selling two to four month natural wellness program enrollments. Hockings charged from $4,000 to $7,000 for enrollments, which included dietary supplements, recipes, and follow-up phone and email support. He charged an additional $125 for a pre-enrollment consultation. Hockings Refused to Grant Two Older Iowans Cancellations & Refunds Two older Iowans who attended the seminar and paid approximately $4,000 apiece in enrollment fees, filed complaints with the Consumer Protection Division after Hockings refused to allow them to cancel and seek refunds. Contrary to Iowa law, Hockings informed both consumers through emails that the contracts they signed waived their rights to cancel or seek refunds. In an email to a 74-year-old Iowa woman who sought a refund a day after she enrolled, Hockings wrote, You signe Continue reading >>

7 Steps To Health And The Big Diabetes Lie

7 Steps To Health And The Big Diabetes Lie

According to the CDC Diabetes Mellitus affects more than 29 million people in the United States (of whom 7 million people remain undiagnosed). Another 57 million people are estimated to have prediabetes. It is the 7th leading cause of death, costing $132 billion in the US alone every year. Diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions in the USA and abroad. This medical condition is not well understood, even by the medical profession. Or if they understand it, they do not explain it well. At first there will be no symptoms or pain from it. But if left untreated it will weaken your body day after day, unnoticeably, until it can even become life-threatening. The most disturbing part is that there are no symptoms at the beginning of this disease. This is why millions of people have diabetes or pre-diabetes, but don’t know about it (yet). They may be diagnosed later, when their diabetes has reached a more advanced stage. But once the disease is more advanced between stage 2 and stage 5, it can have dire consequences for our body, like heart diseases, loss of vision, liver dysfunction or even lower limb amputation, to name a few. Diabetes is like a slow and invisible undermining of our cells and organs. By the way I am John, the owner of this site. I was diagnosed myself a few years back (to my great surprise) and both my uncle and grandfather died of it. This is why I am really concerned about understanding the factors causing it and possible cures if they exist. If you are looking for in-depth information on how to reverse or prevent type-2 diabetes, welcome! It is hard to live a normal life when you have been diagnosed with diabetes. Or is it? Well, it turns out, you could dramatically improve your chances of reverting type-2 diabetes by following a few simple steps… …s Continue reading >>

What Is Prediabetes And Why Does It Matter?

What Is Prediabetes And Why Does It Matter?

When I’m seeing a new patient, I am especially alert to certain pieces of their history. Do they have a strong family history of diabetes? Are they of Latino, Asian, Native-American, or African-American ethnicity? Did they have diabetes in pregnancy? Are they overweight or obese? Do they have polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)? Why do I care about these things? Because they may be clues that the patient is at risk for developing adult-onset (type 2) diabetes, and that can lead to multiple major medical problems. Many people have heard of type 2 diabetes, a disease where the body loses its ability to manage sugar levels. Adult-onset diabetes most often affects people with known risk factors and can take years to fully develop, unlike juvenile (type 1) diabetes, which can develop randomly and quickly. Here is why high blood sugar is a problem Untreated or undertreated diabetes means persistently high blood sugars, which can cause horrible arterial blockages, resulting in strokes and heart attacks. High blood sugars also cause nerve damage, with burning leg pain that eventually gives way to numbness. This, combined with the arterial blockages, can result in deformities and dead tissue, which is why many people with diabetes end up with amputations. The tiny blood vessels to the retina are also affected, which can cause blindness. And don’t forget the kidneys, which are especially susceptible to the damage caused by high blood sugar. Diabetes is a leading cause of kidney failure requiring dialysis and/or kidney transplant. But wait! There’s more. High blood sugar impairs the white blood cell function critical to a healthy immune system, and sugar is a great source of energy for invading bacteria and fungi. These factors put folks at risk of nasty infections of all kin Continue reading >>
