Plant Extracts As Treatment For Diabetes Mellitus

Plant extracts as treatment for diabetes mellitus Debbri, Hawa Abdulgader (1996)Plant extracts as treatment for diabetes mellitus. PhD thesis, University of Glasgow. Printed Thesis Information: The herbal extract of Artemisia has been regarded to be anti-hyperglycaemic since olden times and is commonly used by diabetics in Libya. The present work was designed to evaluate, test and determine which fraction or component of the herb had the hypoglycaemic effects in normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. The plant extract was administered to the animals in their drinking water and body weight, food and fluid intake and urine volume were all monitored daily. Food and fluid intake and body weight gain in normal rats were not altered by treatment with the plant extract but there was a rise in the urine glucose in the first six rats but rats 7, 8 and 9 were not affected by treatment with plant. Urine volume was increased in all rats suggesting Artemisia judaica is a mild diuretic. The streptozotocin-induced diabetic rat model, used in this study, was associated with the characteristic diabetic symptoms of hyperphagia, hyperglycaemia, polydipsia, weight loss and urinary glucose excretion. When a crude aqueous extract of Artemisia was given in their drinking water, it had little effect on these symptoms after 10 days of treatment. Urine glucose was reduced in the last two days and ketones in the urine were abolished by this treatment.Diabetes mellitus is known to affect many and varied parameters in rat liver. Insulin, biguanides and sulphonylureas are known antidiabetic diabetic treatments. Artemisia judaica extract was tested for its effect on hepatic steroid metabolism and glycogen phosphorylase a activity in comparison with the above drugs. Clearly Artemisia does act Continue reading >>

Thesis Title: Development of Clinical Decision Support Systems for the Management of Diabetes Mellitus In the present PhD thesis, the study and development of decision support systems for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diabetes has been conducted. In the first part of the thesis, a comparative assessment of different machine learning and statistical methodologies towards the development of risk prediction models for the incidence and the evolution of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus has been orchestrated. The use of ensembles of classifiers, and specifically ensembles of feed forward neural networks, for the prediction of Diabetes Mellitus for Pima Indian women and Cardiovascular Diseases for patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus has been examined. Several classifiers have been developed, others follow the Bagging paradigm, others are ensembles of Feed-forward Neural Networks with different numbers of hidden neurons or layers, others follow the Binary Logistic Regression paradigm, others follow the Bayesian approach, and others are variations of Decision Trees. It has been shown that the ensembles of classifiers that have been trained following the Bagging approach and the ensembles of feed forward neural networks with different numbers of hidden neurons or layers have achieved the highest levels of prediction accuracy and their predictions are closer to the real risk scores, as indicated by the results of the Hosmer-Lemeshow test. The obtained results justify that ensembles of Artificial Neural Networks can significantly contribute in predicting the incidence of T2DM or its complications by having the capacity to handle the unbalanced nature, wh Continue reading >>

Quality Of Life Of People With Diabetes Mellitus In Greece

Quality Of Life Of People With Diabetes Mellitus In Greece

Quality of Life of People with Diabetes Mellitus in Greece Pisimisis, T; (2014) Quality of Life of People with Diabetes Mellitus in Greece. Doctoral thesis , UCL (University College London). Diabetes is a chronic disease that influences almost all aspects of life of an individual, especially Quality of Life (QoL). This PhD thesis is the outcome of a research that aimed to assess the QoL of people with diabetes in Greece. The study is important because the area of diabetes-related QoL is generally understudied and is the first to have investigated this within the Greek population. This work involved the creation of the Greek version of the Audit of Diabetes Dependent Quality of Life (ADDQoL-Gr) through translating, culturally adapting and validating the instrument as a QoL measure. The version was accepted by the author and the MAPI institute as the Greek version of the ADDQoL. The QoL for people with diabetes in Greece was investigated using the ADDQoL-Gr. An assessment of their health status using the SF-36, as well as the relationship of QoL and health status with medical and socioeconomic factors was also investigated. 1027 diabetes patients participated in this cross-sectional analytical study from 8 different sites from central and northern Greece. This thesis contributes to knowledge because i) identifies some characteristics of QoL predictors; ii) explores and prioritises QoL determinants; iii) reveals the complexity of the relationship between medical-socioeconomic factors and QoL; and iv) offers an instrument for measuring diabetes-related QoL for Greek speaking populations. The main conclusion drawn from this research was that diabetes seriously affects QoL, with complications (microvascular disease followed by foot amputation) having the most adverse effect. Clinical Application Of The Food Insulin Index To Diabetes Mellitus

Clinical Application Of The Food Insulin Index To Diabetes Mellitus

Title: Clinical Application of the Food Insulin Index to Diabetes Mellitus Authors: Bell, Kirstine Issue Date: 14-May-2014 Publisher: University of Sydney. School of Molecular and Microbial Bioscience. Abstract: The Food Insulin Index (FII) is a novel system of ranking foods based on the insulin response in healthy subjects relative to an isoenergetic reference food. The goal of this thesis was to explore the clinical application of the FII to mealtime insulin dosing in type 1 diabetes. Carbohydrate counting is the current gold standard method for determining prandial insulin dose in type 1 diabetes, however only 7 studies assessing the efficacy of carbohydrate counting for glycaemic control in people with type 1 diabetes could be identified. Meta-analysis revealed there was no significant improvement in HbA1c with carbohydrate counting over general dietary advice and/or usual care (-0.35%, p = 0.096). This study highlighted the need for research into alternative strategies to improve the accuracy of the mealtime insulin dose. The FII reveals a notable insulin demand for foods high in protein and fat, nutrients that would normally be disregarded for mealtime insulin dosing with traditional carbohydrate counting. Compared with carbohydrate counting, the FII algorithm was able to reduce mean blood glucose level for six foods high in protein (5.7 +/- 0.2 mmol/L vs 6.5 +/- 0.2 mmol/L, p = 0.003), without significantly increasing the risk of hypoglycaemia (p = 0.155). In the first randomised, controlled trial of the real-world application of the FII, the FII was at least as good as carbohydrate counting for glycaemic control in 26 adults with type 1 diabetes (HbA1c FII: -0.1 ± 0.1% vs CC: -0.3 ± 0.2%, p = 0.855), with a trend towards reduced risk of hypoglycaemia in the FI Continue reading >>

Mems For Diabetic Retinopathy

Mems For Diabetic Retinopathy

Kang, Dongyang (2015) MEMS for Diabetic Retinopathy. Dissertation (Ph.D.), California Institute of Technology. doi:10.7907/Z97D2S34. As the worldwide prevalence of diabetes mellitus continues to increase, diabetic retinopathy remains the leading cause of visual impairment and blindness in many developed countries. Between 32 to 40 percent of about 246 million people with diabetes develop diabetic retinopathy. Approximately 4.1 million American adults 40 years and older are affected by diabetic retinopathy. This glucose-induced microvascular disease progressively damages the tiny blood vessels that nourish the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye, leading to retinal ischemia (i.e., inadequate blood flow), retinal hypoxia (i.e., oxygen deprivation), and retinal nerve cell degeneration or death. It is a most serious sight-threatening complication of diabetes, resulting in significant irreversible vision loss, and even total blindness. Unfortunately, although current treatments of diabetic retinopathy (i.e., laser therapy, vitrectomy surgery and anti-VEGF therapy) can reduce vision loss, they only slow down but cannot stop the degradation of the retina. Patients require repeated treatment to protect their sight. The current treatments also have significant drawbacks. Laser therapy is focused on preserving the macula, the area of the retina that is responsible for sharp, clear, central vision, by sacrificing the peripheral retina since there is only limited oxygen supply. Therefore, laser therapy results in a constricted peripheral visual field, reduced color vision, delayed dark adaptation, and weakened night vision. Vitrectomy surgery increases the risk of neovascular glaucoma, another devastating ocular disease, characterized by the proliferation of Continue reading >>

"cardiovascular Complications Of Diabetes Mellitus" By Fuad K. Faraj

The aims of this thesis are to attempt to identify subjects at increased risk of diabetes-associated cardiovascular disease (CVD) at various stages of the condition, focusing predominantly on the most common form of the condition, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This includes attempting to identify a subset of the population that already has diabetes who may be at particularly increased risk of CVD, to determine if measuring some of the novel markers of CVD risk in subjects with diabetes may be useful in assessing cardiovascular risk, assessing risk of CVD in newly diagnosed diabetes and attempting to identify prevalence of cardiovascular complications in newly diagnosed patients. Finally I will determine whether genetic heterogeneity in the Calpain 10 (CAPN10) gene might be a useful indicator of diabetes risk in Irishsubjects and as such be a way of identifying subjects at future risk of CVD prior to the onset of DM when interventions may be more effective in reducing CVD risk. To determine the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome (MS) in patients with diabetes. To estimate and compare the prevalence of the MS in both TlDM and T2DM patients. To evaluate the medium and long term cardiovascular risk utilizing the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS) risk engine in patients who are newly diagnosed with T2DM. To evaluate patients with newly diagnosed diabetes for the presence of significant subclinical macrovascular disease. To study the association of novel risk of cardiovascular factors, fibrinogen and C-reactive protein (CRP) and albuminuria as markers of CVD risk in newly diagnosed patients with T2DM. To estimate the prevalence and the relationship of three polymorphisms (43, 63 and 2037) and insertion-deletion 19 of the CAPN10 gene in a cohort of Irish Continue reading >>

Spiral: A Study On Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus In Abu Dhabi, Uae: Prevalence, Risk Factors & Quality Of Management

Spiral: A Study On Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus In Abu Dhabi, Uae: Prevalence, Risk Factors & Quality Of Management

Background The prevalence of diabetes, chiefly type 2 (T2DM), is particularly high in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Effective management of the disorder and its co-morbidities is needed; however quality of T2DM care is variable and suboptimal worldwide. In the UAE, few studies have been undertaken to systematically review the prevalence of T2DM and its risk factors and any changes in these trends overtime. Also, studies on the quality of T2DM care and factors influencing it are lacking. Aim To examine the quality of care provided to people with T2DM in Abu Dhabi, particularly Al-Ain, and identify factors influencing it. Methods This was a multi-method study involving systematic reviews, and quantitative and qualitative approaches. Quantitative data were collected from a random sample of medical records of people with T2DM to assess the quality of T2DM care and improvement overtime and investigate any differences in the care provided to different age groups and genders. The qualitative method includes semi-structured interviews with healthcare professionals to investigate factors affecting the quality of T2DM care. Results Findings from the quantitative study demonstrated that the care provided to people with T2DM is sub-optimal for glycaemic and blood pressure control. Better glycaemic control was more common among people aged 40 and above. However, encouraging progress with regard to intermediate outcomes of diabetes control including glycaemic and lipid between 2008 and 2010 was found among both genders. Four main themes emerged from the thematic analysis including motivation of healthcare professionals, training of healthcare professionals, team work and Emirate cultural impact on diabetes care. Conclusion This study has provided a picture of T2DM prevalence and ri Continue reading >>

Prevalence Of Vitamin D Deficiency In Pregnant Women And Its Association With Gestational Diabetes Mellitus - Wrap: Warwick Research Archive Portal

Prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in pregnant women and its association with gestational diabetes mellitus Al-Musharaf, Sara (2017)Prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in pregnant women and its association with gestational diabetes mellitus. PhD thesis, University of Warwick. Several reports have linked vitamin D deficiency with an increased risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Both of these conditions are alarmingly common in Saudi Arabia, and pose additional risk of developing future metabolic disease. This study, therefore, investigates the vitamin D status amongst pregnant Saudi women, and the potential influence of vitamin D deficiency on metabolic dysfunction, such as GDM. A total of 578 pregnant women (28.8 5.4 years) were recruited for this study during their first trimester of pregnancy (8-12 weeks) and followed up in their second trimester (24-28 weeks), where data were collected from 297 [51.3% (297/578); 28.9 5.3 years] women. The study collected socio-economic, anthropometric and biochemical data, along with dietary intake, physical activity and sun indices. The findings of this study indicate that during the first trimester 81% of women being vitamin D deficient, dropping to 77% in the second trimester. It was also noted that being younger in age, multiparous, having a lower level of education, being a housewife, and living in West Riyadh were all associated with vitamin D deficiency during the first trimester (p < 0.05), and this further corresponded to reduced sun exposure (p < 0.001). In contrast, physically active pregnant women, women adequately exposed to sunlight at noon (p < 0.001), and residents of North Riyadh all had significantly higher circulating vitamin D levels (p < 0.05). Furthermore, low levels of high-density lipoprotein choleste Continue reading >>
