[1] He is the chairman and Chief of Diabetology at Dr. Mohans Diabetes Specialities Centre , which is a WHO Collaborating Centre for Noncommunicable Diseases Prevention and Control and an IDF Centre of Education. He is also the President and Director of the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation in Chennai. [2] Mohan has been delivering care to patients with diabetes across the country via its centres and tele-medicine. He has trained thousands of diabetologists in India and other developing countries. He also has contributed to scientific research on diabetes and serves on various national and international bodies in his field of specialisation. [3] Mohan completed his undergraduate (MBBS) and postgraduate medical education (MD, General Medicine) from Madras Medical College, Chennai, India. The New York Times highlighted an ongoing “David versus Goliath battle” between a father who wants to reduce the amount of junk food available to children at schools and and the Indian government. An article published Tuesday follows the efforts of a man named Rahul Verma, who filed a lawsuit in 2010 to ban soda and junk food from schools in the country. One source quoted in the article compared the looming issue of diabetes in India to “sitting on a volcano.” According to the International Diabetes Foundation, India has 69.1 million people with diabetes—that’s about 8.7 percent of the adult population. (About 9.4 percent of all Americans have diabetes; that figure includes more than a million children, according to the American Diabetes Association.) The World Health Organization estimated that another 36 million people might have diabetes but are not diagnosed. The disease has only become a bigger problem over time; one 2007 article published in the New England Journal of Medicine stated that “In [India and China], the incidence and prevalence of type 2 diabetes among children are also increasing at an alarming rate, with potentially devastating consequences." Complications of diabetes can include nerve damage, vision problems, stroke and high blood pressure, the ADA's website states. Seriously uncontrolled blood sugar can even be fatal. Sonar, who had moved to the four-room apartment six years ago from the citys Cuffe Parade slum and, before that, a mud hut in the village of Matari, was treated for high blood pressure and dizziness last October. When her legs started aching and grew numb, her doctor gave her grimmer news: After escaping from childhood hunger and deprivation and joining Indias booming middle class, Sonar was suffering from diabetes -- a disease normally tied to a lifetime of inactivity and overeating, Bloomberg Markets magazine reports in its December issue. Diabetes, the weight gain, these things shouldnt have happened, Sonar says, dressed in a pink-and-white sari that reveals the small paunch on her 55-kilogram (121-pound) frame -- a normal weight for her 1.5-meter (5 foot) height. As of 2015, 415million adults have diabetes, and this number is estimated to increase to 642million by 2040. More than 95% of all adults with diabetes have type2 diabetes (T2DM). India is one of the epicentres of the global diabetes epidemic and has the second highest number of people with the disease in the world with 69.2million individuals as of 2015 and this number is set to increase to 123.5 million by 2040. The personal, social and economic costs of diabetes are huge and are likely to adversely affect India's economic development over the next couple of decades. Unless urgent steps are taken to thwart this burgeoning epidemic, more and more young and middle-aged Indians will fall prey to diabetes in the prime of their lives. The first step to combating any epidemic is to gather all available information about it. Till recently, efforts to tackle the diabetes epidemic in India were hamstrung by the lack of quality original data emanating from the country itself. It was also evident to researchers in this field that the data obtained from Western populations could not be directly extrapolated to Indians, since the natural history of diabetes in Indians is quite different from other ethnic groups. In India, about 63 million people suffer from diabetes, and this figure is likely to go up to 80 million by 2025. Delhi alone has more than 30 lakh people suffering from this disease (Indo-US collaborative study). A study conducted by Dr Anoop Misra, showed that 37% of urban south Asian Indians suffer from Diabetes and pre-Diabetes. Dr MMS Ahuja was born in Multan (now in Pakistan) on 16 August 1929. He began his MBBS at Lahore Medical College, but shifted to Madras Medical College after the Partition of India in 1947. He secured an MRCP at the first attempt at the Royal College of Physicians, London in 1956, and thereafter did his residency at Hammersmith Hospital, London. He returned to India and joined All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in 1958 as Registrar in Medicine, then as Associate Professor of Medicine in 1963 and later as Head of the Department of Medicine in 1969-82 and thereafter as Head, Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism from 1982-89 and also as Dean AIIMS (1988-89), until his retirement in August 1989. He was appointed as supernumerary Professor from 1989-91 after he was bestowed with the prestigious Nehru Fellowship in 1989. Dr Ahuja was instrumental in introducing the DM (Endocrinology) course at the Institute. He further completed his Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians, London in 1981, and was also awarded the prestigious Dr. BC Roy Award for Medical Research in 1982. The objective of the foundation is to provide moral support to diabetic children and youth apart from catering to the physical, emotional, psychological and financial needs of its members. Juvenile Diabetes (also known as Type 1 diabetes or as Insulindependent diabetes) is a chronic illness in which the pancreas of the juvenile diabetic becomes nonfunctional. The probable cause is a viral attack that ruptures the insulinproducing beta islets which causes nonproduction of insulin, a hormone which is naturally produced by the pancreas to control the level of glucose in the body. It is noteworthy that juvenile diabetes is different from maturityonset diabetes (Type 2 diabetes) which usually afflicts persons of over forty years of age. In this case, the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin due to wear and tear over a period of time. And though the pancreas often secretes insulin, the quantity is not as much as required by the body. Contrary to this, in the case of juvenile diabetes, the pancreas does not produce any insulin at all and, therefore, the entire requirement has to be made available to the body externally in order to control blood sugar levels. Presently, insulin injection is the only means through which this can be done and there is no cure as such for juvenile diabetes. Subjects will be counseled for weight loss through diet and exercise. Diet and exercise will be recommended as per the regular norms for weight loss (weight loss 10% from baseline weight will be considered as a significant loss of weight) for overweight and obese subjects. A sample size of 90 subjects was calculated but assuming a drop out rate of 20%, 110 subjects will be enrolled. The project aims to improve the treatment of diabetic wounds. "Every single day, 110 Indians have a foot or part of their leg amputated due to diabetic foot ulcers, and an unknown number die before they are even diagnosed," says Per Ole Nielsen, Project Manager of Access to Healthcare. Training in diagnosis and care of diabetic wounds is essential to reduce this figure. "With the right knowledge, treatment may be deployed rapidly and the wound may heal in time, avoiding an amputation -- that is why education projects like this are so important," says Dr. Arun Bal, Founder President of the Diabetic Foot Society of India, who as local partner applied for support to drive the project. Dr. Anil Kapur, Managing Director of the World Diabetes Foundation and Chairman of the Access to Health Care Donation Board agrees. "It only costs three US dollars to educate a diabetes patient so he will be able take care of his feet and prevent foot ulcers, whereas it costs an estimated 650 dollars to amputate a limb and another 524 dollars for a limb prosthesis. Costs like these put people into lifelong indebtedness," says Anil Kapur.
