Diabetes Educator Guide To Blood Glucose Meter Selection And Monitoring For Accuracy And Safety

Diabetes Educator Guide To Blood Glucose Meter Selection And Monitoring For Accuracy And Safety

The diabetes educator can play an important role in assisting patients with choosing the best blood glucose meter (BGM) to fit their needs and optimize accuracy and safety. There is a wide variety of BGMs on the market and patients are often at the mercy of their prescriber and insurance company when making a choice. In addition to teaching the patient appropriate techniques that will improve accuracy regardless of BGM, diabetes educators should address barriers (physical abilities, mental status, insurance coverage, etc.) to help patients choose a BGM with features that best support individual needs. With the typical life of a meter being 3 to 5 years, the diabetes educator’s role is critical in helping the patient select a BGM that has features that will enhance his/her care. Meter Selection To make sure the device is matched to patient need, consider if the following features may be helpful: • High contrast display that assist with visual impairments/low vision • Talking meter for visual impairments • Test strip and meter size and shape for individuals with dexterity impairments • Lancet function and needle removal for issues with manual dexterity • Alternate site monitoring possibilities • Portability of meter for monitoring multiple times a day • Affordability and access (insurance coverage/copays) • Ability to assist with insulin dosage calculations (bolus calculator) • Uploading capabilities • Interaction with a smart phone app Note: Diabetes Forecast magazine provides an annual review of current meters that can be helpful in guiding decision-making regarding meter selection. Self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) provides feedback on the effectiveness of the treatment plan, assists with the eval Continue reading >>

A New Face For Forecast

A New Face For Forecast

Posted on May 31, 2012 by American Diabetes Association As summer approaches, Diabetes Forecast, the monthly healthy living magazine from the American Diabetes Association, is getting a refreshing redesign. The June issue is all new, with a modern look and a sharp focus on diabetes. We sat down with the new editorial director of Diabetes Forecast, Kelly Rawlings, to talk about what readers can look forward to in the redesigned magazine. Why does Diabetes Forecast have a new look? Magazine design, like diabetes management, sometimes needs updating. Its OK to get comfortable in diabetes management habits that work, but things changesuch as the fact that I need to do some specific blood glucose testing to see why my breakfast insulin dose isnt quite covering my waffle and peanut butter. Diabetes is demanding (Ive lived with type 1 for 38 years), and it requires us to stick to good health habits yet be flexible at the same time. It can be invigorating to reach for something new, something different. Real breakthroughs come from taking advantage of cutting-edge technologies, treatments, best practices and support from people who care. Its in that spirit of change that we celebrate the new design of Diabetes Forecast. Youll first notice our new logoand an amazing photo of one of our recipes. In fact, we had two mouth-watering photos of gigantic forks for the cover, so please visit our Facebook page to vote on which one you like best. When we show people on the cover, they are real people living with and caring for diabetesnot models who have never pricked their fingers or counted carbs. Youll also see easy-to-read type, extra tips and links to additional resources and colorful, appealing photos. Youll see all the great information about diabetes youve come to expect and a re Continue reading >>
