Diabetes Expo - Navy Pier, Pilsen, Chicago, Il - Phone Number - Yelp

This was our 3rd diabetes show we've attended. As in previous years, the place was packed with people, most of whom were older, and often overweight type 2's. I deducted a star from this year's show for how they handled the opening. We were there for 10 AM, the designated show start time. However, it wasn't until about 10:20 that people were allowed into the exhibit hall. Though the doors opened, there were people giving one speech after another while video cameras filmed them. This went on as a growing crowd of people became restless and eager to get on the floor. Then there were some kids dancing and singing. We were too far to hear the song but it may as well have been a poorly performed rendition of "We have diabetes if you please..." While this was going on, the crowd began chanting "Let us in!"Someone opened a side door and soon the mob bypassed the blockage by the entryway. The obese men and women riding their motorized scooters barreled into the aisles and we got out of their way. I think most of the people attending were elderly or uninsured and most of them headed to the Walgreen's and Wal-Mart areas for health screenings. I think they really should have done the speeches before the actual start time of the event, or set up a stage in the venue where they could speak, rather than hold up the start of this show by blocking access.Compared to previous years, there were a lot fewer samples of foods and drinks, but way more health testing stations. Home Depot had a craft area for kids to make their own toolboxes. We also stopped at the Animas booth to learn about the smallest available continuous glucose monitors on the market. Another pharmaceutical company gave out free strawberry-banana fruit smoothies. There was also a spirited speaker talking to a mostly Afri Continue reading >>

2015 American Diabetes Association (ada) Expo Chicago

2015 American Diabetes Association (ada) Expo Chicago

2015 American Diabetes Association (ADA) EXPO Chicago The ADAs most visible initiative is linking diabetes to overall health and wellness. This will be the 11th year that the ADA holds this one-day public expo in Chicago, offering everything from product demonstrations and education on prevention to lectures by prominent people living with diabetes. About 15,000 people attend. Each year, said Erin Callahan, the ADAs EXPO chair, our numbers continue to increase in terms of both attendees and sales. The ADA relies on sponsorships from vendors to support aligned sessions and demos yet finding sponsors for new technology, a major ADA focus, can be tricky. For instance, charging stations come at a cost from both the decorator and the venue, Callahan said. As do digi- tal signage and a conference smartphone app, both of which the ADA hopes to introduce this year. Yet even if the organization invests in new technology, theres no guarantee that attendees will adopt it. The majority have been diagnosed with adult-onset, Type II diabetes, and skew older than 35. [Our attendees] are used to maps in their hands, not apps on their phones, Callahan said. Theyre also not necessarily up for Facebook or Twitter or hashtagging. But the ADAs most visible initiative is more overarching: linking diabetes to overall health and wellness, especially as the number of those who have been diagnosed with the disease climbs. That means an increased focus on cooking demonstrations and education sessions on mak- ing healthy decisions when dining out. We really want to be the health and wellness expo, Callahan said, known for bringing that ethos to our show floor, and that [people with diabetes] can live full, exciting, and fulfilling lives. Got Questions? Diabetes Expo Offers Healthy Answers

Got Questions? Diabetes Expo Offers Healthy Answers

Got Questions? Diabetes EXPO Offers Healthy Answers Jonathan Cottom says his doctor calls him "one of her healthiest patients." Since being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a child 31 years ago, Cottom has always made his health a top priority. Despite his overall success, though, he has struggled with one problem: low morning blood glucose that would often dip into the 30s. So Cottom, 37, who works as a scheduler for an orthopedic surgery practice, decided to stop by the American Diabetes Association's Diabetes EXPO in Pittsburgh last September to hunt for solutions. At EXPO, he learned about how to use a continuous glucose monitor in conjunction with an insulin pump. "I knew about CGMs, but I didn't really understand what was involved," Cottom says. "Hearing about the features of the CGM and how it would change my life really blew my mind." Cottom has been on the pump for 12 years, but at EXPO he found a lot of information about glucose monitoring technology and new devices that he knew little about. And that's the idea. Diabetes EXPOs offer free services including evaluations of vision, bone density, foot, and dental problems. Visitors can talk with endocrinologists, diabetes educators, and other specialists. Cooking and exercise demonstrations encourage people with diabetes and family members to adopt new, healthier habits. Representatives of diabetes drugmakers and device manufacturers are on hand to provide information about their products. "The EXPO is a place where people with diabetes or those at risk can learn about the disease and how to manage it successfully," says Michelle Knight, director of EXPO and rural health initiatives at ADA. Cottom was among about 3,500 people who attended Pittsburgh's EXPO, one of 16 such events that ADA hosted around the count Continue reading >>
