What is Diabetes Canada's reusable goods donation program? Diabetes Canadas reusable goods donation program has been in operation since 1985. We ask Canadians to keep us in mind when theyre cleaning and getting rid of gently used clothing, electronics and small household items. When you donate with Diabetes Canada, everyone wins. Proceeds raised by the program support world-leading diabetes research, education, programs, services and advocacy. Donors feel good knowing their used items are going towards a worthwhile cause and that reusable items are recycled, which has a positive effect on the environment. How do your donations help the environment? When you donate your reusable items to Diabetes Canada, you help the environment by responsibly processing your donations through the Think Recycle program. Each year, the program diverts more than 100 million lbs. of clothing and household items from landfill sites across Canada. This translates into savings of 942 million kWh of energy - equivalent to driving a compact car more than 46,000 times around the globe - and reduces our carbon footprint by 130 million kilograms. Although most groups dont take used baby furniture because of safety concerns, nearly every other item in good shape can be donated. So which charities should you call? Here are a few ideas about who takes what and where it goes: Clothing, footwear, blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, toys, books, sports equipment, small household items, cellphones, computers. Getting organized can be particularly tough for the newly diagnosed. The list of things you need to start managing can seem never-ending and completely overwhelming. Begin with one change in your life, says Susan Weiner, MS, RDN, CDE, CDN, coauthor of The Complete Diabetes Organizer: Your Guide to a Less Stressful and More Manageable Diabetes Life. Living with diabetes is challenging enough as it is, which is why its so important to take stock of your life, simplify where you can and get organised! Clutter in our home can not only be a distraction, it can also cause restlessness and stress. Developed by Japanese organising consultant and author, Marie Kondo, the KonMari Method aims to help you declutter your life, so that you can make space for whats really important: living a healthy, better life. Though it may sound simple, it can be a really challenging exercise. But stick to it! The results are amazing. You need to commit to tidying up all at once. Marie says that its important that you declutter all in one go, as opposed to cleaning over a period of time. Decluttering over a period of time never works, as youll start accumulating things again and youll end up where you began. By decluttering all in one go, youll find that youre more motivated about the challenge at hand. Secondly, according to Marie, you need to visualise your life without the clutter. Dont look at only the material things how a room will look once organised but try to imagine what living a clutter-free life will mean for you. Its not about just throwing things away. Declutter Your Closet, Take The #3lbchallenge And You Could Win

My kids grow out of their clothes so quickly, it can sometimes feel overwhelming. This is why Im taking the #3lbChallenge donating their gently used items to the Canadian Diabetes Associations Clothesline Program, just three pounds at a time. I like to go through my kids closets, especially at this time of the year, to make room for their new back-to-school outfits, shoes and backpacks. My husband and I also clean up our own wardrobes by putting aside everything that we havent worn during the year old yoga pants, accessories and business suits that dont fit anymore. We drop these items into our nearest Clothesline Drop Box and think of it as the easiest weight well ever lose, while contributing to a great cause! Did you know that according to Statistics Canada, Canadians spend four per cent of every dollar earned on clothing? Over time, that means we end up with quite the cluttered closets, and a lot of that clutter ends up in places it shouldnt. As a rule in our household, you will never see us throwing our used clothes in the garbage. We know that many people are in need of our gently used clothing, and that it is our responsibility to keep that clothing out of landfills. We choose instead to give our clothes to the Canadian Diabetes Associations Clothesline Program and hope that one day our donations will help find a cure for the over 10 million Canadians living with diabetes or prediabetes. Decluttering now helps you feel like youre making your resolutions an reality and getting a jump on spring cleaning its like a double whammy for feeling good about yourself! Decluttering can feel like an impossible task, especially because the urge to declutter usually hits you when you feel overwhelmed with stuff. But there a few things you can do to start cleaning out the clutter and giving yourself some room to breathe. The clutter didnt come in a day, so dont expect it to leave in a day either. Be realistic in how long its going to take and be methodical. Dont just purge and dump everything without rhyme or reason. Take it slow and remember that every step forward is a positive one. The key is to not get overwhelmed by the clutter to the point that you stop decluttering all together, or over purge and get rid of things you need and use. Clearing out all the big, bulky items you dont use will make a huge impact, giving you instant space and motivating to persevere. Start with old furniture, especially if its become a landing place for stacks of other clutter. Then move on to items like bedding, pillows, coats and towels. This is the easiest way to give yourself some room to breathe. It may also open up space for items you once deemed clutter because they didnt have a home. The half-empty bottles of pills that you are saving because I paid good money for them or just in case I get that illness again collection. Self-medicating is never a good idea, especially for a diabetic. Have any of your prescriptions changed since you got that almost empty bottle of pills filled? Do you know the drug interaction risks of that old prescription with the medications that you are taking currently. The unknown could kill you or someone you love.
