Top Must Have Diabetes Supplies

Whether you found your way here as a veteran in the #DLIFE, or you are newly diagnosed, one thing always remains constant, diabetes no matter the stage can be challenging. While the challenges are always there, I will say this, it does get easier. Living a life with diabetes will give you exactly what you put into it. For those like myself who learn better when provided a visual clue think of it like this: A car takes gas to work. When you fill the gas tank up, that car will take you wherever you want to go. What happens though when you try to drive the car with no gas at all, when you neglect filling it back up with gas after you used what was in there? Its not going to go anywhere. In terms of diabetes management , if you take the information and training your medical team has given you and simply neglect the care of your diabetes, what happens to your body? Your mind? You cant run on empty, just like the car. Learning to manage your diabetes doesnt have to be tough. Instead of neglecting your care, taking the information your medical team provided you with is the first step. Learning how to process the information youve received is the next. The final step in management is putting everything to use, discovering your role and living. Part of diabetes management is learning which types of products work best for you. Everyone is different so the products that your doctor initially recommends might not be the best fit. As you move forward in your diabetes care and management youll learn which are best. Below youll find a list of some of the more common types of diabetes management products, that are not typically covered by insurance . (Disclaimer: Everyones insurance is different, so check first before you purchase any of the items on the list, if your insurance covers Continue reading >>

Glucose meters, or glucometers, are small battery-operated medical devices for people with diabetes or hypoglycemia. These meters test your blood sugar levels at regular intervals throughout the day as recommended by a doctor. When choosing a glucose monitor, a doctor may have recommendations for you, but there are many available from manufacturers like Dexcom G5, Freestyle Libre, Onetouch Verio, Accu-chek Aviva, and Prodigy. Ketone monitors measure the level of ketones in your blood or urine, however you will get a more accurate reading from blood. For diabetics, the presence of ketones in the blood is critical to keep track of as it means that your body is not producing enough insulin, and can make you sick as a result. Popular ketone monitors include those from trusted brands Ketonix and Precision Xtra. Glucose test strips, which work with a glucose monitor, are small strips of chemically-treated paper that measure the level of glucose in your blood. For a glucose check, only a quick prick of the finger and a small drop of blood for the test strip are needed. The strips are available over the counter, and depending on your glucose meter, you can get your strips from Onetouch, Accu-Chek, Freestyle, Contour, TRUE, and Prodigy. Because glucose strips cannot test for ketones, it is critical to have ketone strips in the event of illness. For a diabetic, the presence of ketones in your blood can mean serious illness if paired with a high glucose reading. Like glucose strips, ketone test strips are not interchangeable and it is important to get the strips that match your chosen monitor. Some of the leading strips available come from brands like Precision Xtra, Bayer, and Ketostix. Lancets are small, double-edged needles used to prick your finger for either a glucose or a k Continue reading >>

Fda Approves Implantable Mhealth Sensor For Diabetes Care Management

FDA Approves Implantable mHealth Sensor for Diabetes Care Management The FDA has approved an mHealth platform that includes a sensor embedded in the arm, a wearable transmitter and an app, all designed to help those with diabetes and their care teams continuously track blood-glucose levels. -Federal officials have given the green light to an implantable mHealth device designed to help people with diabetes and their caregivers remotely monitor blood glucose levels. The U.S. Food and Drug Administrations approval of the Eversense CGM (continuous glucose management) system, developed by Senseonics, continues the rapid pace of digital health innovation for the diabetes market. Officials say this is the first approved implantable device, and it promises up to three months of continuous monitoring, as opposed to the one to two weeks now promised by other wearable CGM platforms. The FDA is committed to advancing novel products that leverage digital technology to improve patient care, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, MD, said in a press release. These technologies allow patients to gain better control over their health. mHealth Tools, AI Combine to Avert Serious Diabetic Health Issues This approval of a more seamless digital system that gives patients the ability to effectively manage a chronic disease like diabetes is a vivid illustration of the potential for these mobile platforms, he added. The FDA is creating a new and more carefully tailored regulatory approach for software products, including mobile medical apps, that will enable efficient oversight of these digital technologies and maintain FDAs gold standard for product review. Were advancing a more modern approach for these products thats carefully adapted to the unique characteristics of these opportunities. mHealth Continue reading >>

6 Ways Technology Is Changing Diabetes Care

6 Ways Technology Is Changing Diabetes Care

6 Ways Technology is Changing Diabetes Care The number of older adults living with diabetes is rising, and this population is at increased risk for serious complications and death. Exciting new technologies and products bring hope for improving care and management. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), diabetes disproportionately affects older adults.1 Already more than 25% of the US population aged 65 and older is living with this disease, and the number is expected to grow rapidly in the coming decades.2 This population has the highest rates of major lower extremity amputation, heart attack, visual impairment, and end-stage renal disease of any age group, and higher rates of premature death, disability, and cardiovascular disease than those without diabetes. Older adults with diabetes also are at greater risk for issues such as polypharmacy, cognitive impairment, urinary incontinence, and falls.2 New tools for treatment and management like those described below could change the way diabetes impacts future generations, potentially decreasing the devastating toll this disease can take in later life. Hypoglycemia, or extremely low blood glucose, is a major concern for older adults with diabetes. Those aged 75 and older have twice the rate of emergency department visits for hypoglycemia of the general population with diabetes.2 "Members of the geriatric population with compromised kidney function or hypoglycemic unawareness may be more prone to hypoglycemia," says Eileen Sturner, RD, CDE, BC-ADM, MBA, manager of the Abington-Jefferson Health Diabetes Center and Nutrition Counseling Center in Abington, Pennsylvania. When an individual experiences an episode of severe low blood sugar, a glucagon injection is the only remedy. A bystander must prepare and inj Continue reading >>

Tandem Diabetes Care

Tandem Diabetes Care

Tandem Diabetes Care is a public US medical device manufacturer based in San Diego, CA. The company develops medical technologies for the treatment of diabetes and specifically insulin infusion therapy.[1] History[edit] In 2006, a group of engineers recognized the need for new and improved methods of pumping insulin and incorporated as Phluid, Inc.[2] In 2007, Kim Blickenstaff joined the organization as President and CEO, bringing his philosophy of using market research as the inspiration for product development and started on the development of the t:slim Insulin Pump.[3] In 2008, this predecessor company became the newly incorporated Tandem Diabetes Care, Inc. that was formed with a focus on promoting a comprehensive, user-centric, and integrated approach to diabetes product development and customer care.[4] Tandem Diabetes Care felt that incorporating enhanced ease of use and attractive design—often associated with consumer electronics development—would also encourage more patients to consider the clinical benefits of insulin pump therapy. Tandem Diabetes Care interviewed more than 4,000 insulin pump users and health care providers to design its first device, the t:slim Insulin Pump.[5] In 2016, the company was ranked #39 on the Deloitte Fast 500 North America list.[6] Products[edit] In November 2011, the company received FDA clearance to market the t:slim Insulin Pump, the first ever touch-screen insulin pump.[7] In February 2013, the company received FDA clearance to market the t:connect Diabetes Management Application, a Mac and PC-compatible data management application that provides t:slim Pump users and their healthcare providers a way to display data from the pump and supported blood glucose meters on a cloud-based platform.[8] In January 2015, Tandem annou Continue reading >>
