The Cruel Cost Of Ignoring Diabetes: Jane Lost An Arm And Two Legs To The Disease Because, Like So Many, She Didn't Take It Seriously

The Cruel Cost Of Ignoring Diabetes: Jane Lost An Arm And Two Legs To The Disease Because, Like So Many, She Didn't Take It Seriously

Six years ago, Jane Knight was just another of Britain's army of multi-tasking women: a devoted wife and mother who frantically balanced looking after her family, including an autistic son, with her work as a complimentary therapist. But today, the 47 year-old is a triple amputee, having undergone operations to remove both her legs and one arm. She faces the prospect of losing her remaining arm in the near future. The cause of such devastating physical disability is not an horrific accident or advanced cancer but a condition that affects more than three million of us: diabetes. Furthermore, as Jane acknowledges, her situation could have been avoided had she done more to keep her blood sugar levels under control. Her story is a harrowing reality check to those who fail to understand how uncontrolled diabetes can cause wide-ranging health complications ranging from loss of sight, damaged kidneys, heart problems and even amputation. 'Diabetes is a condition that has to be respected otherwise the implications are horrendous,' she says. 'It was only when I became pregnant with my son, almost 20 years after first being diagnosed, that I realised how vital it is to keep the condition under strict control. Unfortunately by then the damage had started. 'I don't want anyone to feel sorry for me. I just want people to learn from my situation. When I hear of teenagers skipping diabetic clinics or adults who think that because they feel all right they can just ignore their condition, I want to scream in frustration. I want them to shout: "Look at me and see what diabetes can do. Is this what you want?"' Alarmingly, Jane's situation is not unique. It's thought that there are around a million people with undiagnosed diabetes ignoring warning signs such as wounds that fail to heal and Continue reading >>

Hot Weather And Diabetes?

Hot Weather And Diabetes?

Can my blood glucose still go up in the summer if I do not drink enough water? Are you sure you want to delete this answer? Not drinking enough water causes dehydration. Dehydration causes your blood to get "thick" (more concentrated), so the sugar readings ARE higher. But this is kind of a false reading. In most cases it is not the fact that your blood sugar is higher, but the fact that you have the SAME blood sugar in less blood. So keep yourself hydrated, Drink PLENTY of water -- about 80 ounces a day, and more if you are sweating a lot. Keeping yourself properly hydrated is VERY important for a diabetic. Source(s): Reverse Any Diabetes Easily : Source(s): Cure Diabetes At Home - I've actually gone into insulin shock in very hot weather (105 degrees F) because my metabolism is stressed by the high temperatures. Keep yourself well hydrated. I've been a type 1 diabetic for not quite 54 years. I finally have enough sense not to go out in 100+ degree F weather, but I'm no longer enrolled in classes, so I don't have to be out in it for very long. Very cold weather can also do the same thing, but I don't have any specific memories of that happening with me. Oh, yea, I do remember one incident now, but it wasn't that cold, just the wind tunnel effect and wind chill on Common St. and Tulane Ave. in New Orleans walking from the street car stop to my Dad's office with just a sweater, wool suit and underwear. That was long before I acclimatized to central OK weather. I'm a 45 year old woman and was recently diagnosed as being a borderline diabetic. My doctor prescribed some medication, but before filling it I decided to do some research on the internet which led me to the methods. After reading this ebook and applying the methods, my scepticism turned to 100% belief. I noticed Continue reading >>

12 Ways To Avoid Diabetes

12 Ways To Avoid Diabetes

Nearly 25 percent of Americans are thought to have prediabetes -- a condition of slightly elevated blood sugar levels that often develops into diabetes within 10 years -- but only 4 percent of people know it. What's worse, of those who are aware, less than half really tried to reduce their risk by losing weight, eating less, and exercising more. These are just a few of the good-for-you habits that can reverse prediabetes and ensure you never get the real thing, which can mean a lifetime of drugs and blood sugar monitoring, an increased risk of heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, and other scary health threats. Read on for 12 simple tricks everyone can start today. More from Prevention: 12 Ways to Avoid Diabetes Shedding even 10 pounds can significantly slash your risk. Even extremely overweight people were 70 percent less likely to develop diabetes when they lost just 5 percent of their weight -- even if they didn't exercise. If you weigh 175 pounds, that's a little less than 9 pounds! Use our calorie calculator to see how many calories you consume -- and how many you need to shave off your diet -- if you want to lose a little. 12 Ways to Avoid Diabetes Eating greens with a vinaigrette before a starchy entrée may help control your blood sugar levels. In an Arizona State University study, people with type 2 diabetes or a precursor condition called insulin resistance had lower blood sugar levels if they consumed about 2 tablespoons of vinegar just before a high-carb meal. "Vinegar contains acetic acid, which may inactivate certain starch-digesting enzymes, slowing carbohydrate digestion," said lead researcher Carol Johnston. In fact, vinegar's effects may be similar to those of the blood sugar -- lowering medication acarbose (Precose). Before you eat that fettuccine, enj Continue reading >>

Cold All The Time? Here's Why

Cold All The Time? Here's Why

We all feel chilled to the bone every now and then especially during cold winter months. But when you just cant warm up is there a deeper, underlying issue? Q: Im always cold. My doctor tested my thyroid levels, which were normal. Is there another reason, or test I can have to diagnose my constant cold hands? Your thyroid can contribute to being cold all the time, but other reasons may include: * Skipping meals The body conserves energy and produces less heat when you dont eat. * Not getting enough sleep This can make you feel rundown and less active. * Anemia A simple blood test can detect if you are anemic.* Hormonal imbalances In women, fluctuating estrogen levels can make you sensitive to cold temperatures. * Raynauds disease The blood vessels and smaller arteries that supply blood to the skin constrict and limit circulation. * Low body weight Alvarez said he is referring to muscle mass and body fat. Using your muscles generates heat, and fat acts as insulation. If you are always feeling cold, go to your primary care physician and have a physical. And you may even want to see an endocrinologist. Diabetes And Hot Weather: Be Extra Careful

Diabetes And Hot Weather: Be Extra Careful

For people with diabetes, particularly those taking medications and/or insulin, the Center for Disease Control’s Division of Diabetes Translation has prepared a list of precautions during hot weather: Heat can affect your blood glucose (sugar) levels and also increase the absorption of some fast-acting insulin, meaning you will need to test your blood glucose more often and perhaps adjust your intake of insulin, food, and liquids. Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, to avoid dehydration. Avoid sugar-sweetened beverages such as sweet tea and sodas. If your doctor has limited how much liquid you can drink, ask what to do during times of high heat. Check package inserts with medications to learn when high temperatures can affect them. Take medications with you if you will need to take them while you’re away from home, and protect them from the heat. If you’re traveling with insulin, don’t store it in direct sunlight or in a hot car. Keep it in a cooler, but do not place it directly on ice or on a gel pack. Check glucose meter and test strip packages for information on use during times of high heat and humidity. Do not leave them in a hot car, by a pool, or on the beach. Heat can damage insulin pumps and other equipment. Do not leave the disconnected pump or supplies in the direct sun. Get physical activity in air-conditioned areas, or exercise outside early or late in the day, during cooler temperatures. Use your air conditioner or go to air-conditioned buildings in your community. A beautiful sunny day is the ultimate motivation to go outside and play, but the summer heat and exercise can be a risky combination. Why Do Some Dogs Eat Feces? And Is It Harmful?

Why Do Some Dogs Eat Feces? And Is It Harmful?

Why Do Some Dogs Eat Feces? And Is It Harmful? There are many theories about why dogs engage in this behavior, but most fall into two categoriesbehavioral or medical. Each week,Dr. Patrick Tate, chief of the veterinary staff and a general practitioner at, answers reader questions about pets. This week's question comes from reader Corey (Sweeney) Engmann. Question:As awful as this sounds, I have caught our dog eating her own feces in the backyard. Why is she doing this and is it harmful? Answer: Although it is somewhat unpleasant to talk about, many pet owners have experienced coprophagia (the medical term for "eating feces") with their dogs. Not only do dogs eat their own stools, but they often like the feces of cats, birds, deer, rabbits and other animals. This behavioris most common in puppies up to a year old, but can occur at any stage throughout a dog's life. Coprophagia is usually harmless, but can sometimes spread an infectious disease or parasite to your dog. It can also cause gastroenteritis that results in vomiting and diarrhea. There are many theories about why dogs engage in this behavior, but most fall into two categoriesbehavioral or medical. Sometimes a dog begins to eat feces if they have an underlying health problem such as diabetes, a parasitic infection or gastrointestinal disease. However, other signs like vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, lethargy and weight loss would usually be present along with the coprophagia. As always, consult your veterinarian if you see these or other symptoms in your pet. When analyzing the behavioral cause of dog coprophagia, it is helpful to remember that dogs are VERY different from humans. A human does not enjoy the smell or taste of a rotting animal carcass, spoiled food, putrid water, urine or feces. Unfortunatel Continue reading >>

Caffeine: How Does It Affect Blood Pressure?

Caffeine: How Does It Affect Blood Pressure?

Caffeine: How does it affect blood pressure? Caffeine can cause a short, but dramatic increase in your blood pressure, even if you don't have high blood pressure. It's unclear what causes this spike in blood pressure. Some researchers believe that caffeine could block a hormone that helps keep your arteries widened. Others think that caffeine causes your adrenal glands to release more adrenaline, which causes your blood pressure to increase. Some people who regularly drink caffeinated beverages have a higher average blood pressure than do those who drink none. Others who regularly drink caffeinated beverages develop a tolerance to caffeine. As a result, caffeine doesn't have a long-term effect on their blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure, ask your doctor whether you should limit or stop drinking caffeinated beverages. If you're concerned about caffeine's effect on your blood pressure, try limiting the amount of caffeine you drink to 200 milligrams a day about the same amount as is generally in two 8-ounce (237-milliliter) cups of brewed coffee. Keep in mind that the amount of caffeine in coffee and other beverages varies by brand and method of preparation. Also, if you have high blood pressure, avoid caffeine right before activities that naturally increase your blood pressure, such as exercise, weightlifting or hard physical labor. To see if caffeine might be raising your blood pressure, check your blood pressure before drinking a cup of coffee or other caffeinated beverage and again 30 to 120 minutes afterward. If your blood pressure increases by about five to 10 points, you may be sensitive to the blood pressure raising effects of caffeine. If you plan to cut back on caffeine, do so gradually over several days to a week to avoid withdrawal headaches. Papa Continue reading >>

Diabetes In Hot Weather — 12 Things To Know

Diabetes In Hot Weather — 12 Things To Know

To date, 2016 has been the hottest year ever, and it’s getting hotter. From now on, coping with heat will be an important part of managing diabetes. Some knowledge that might help you: 1. High body temperatures can lower blood sugar. Mayo Clinic writers Nancy Klobassa Davidson, RN, and Peggy Moreland, RN, CDE, say you should check your sugars more often in the hot weather. 2. Sunburn can raise blood sugar. The Mayo Clinic advises wearing a good sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat while out in the sun. 3. Warm skin absorbs insulin faster, while dehydrated skin absorbs insulin more slowly. The closer you can keep your injection site to normal temperature and hydration, the better. 4. Dehydration from sweating can raise blood sugar and can lead to heat exhaustion. According to the Cleveland Clinic, people with diabetes are more likely than others to be admitted to hospitals for dehydration and heat exhaustion, and to die from it. High glucose levels lead to urinating more, which increases risk for dehydration. This may be especially true if you’re on an SGLT-2 inhibitor drug. Keep drinking water with a bit of salt if you are blessed to live in an area where water is available. Have a bottle with you and don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink. Learn to check yourself for dehydration by pinching up some skin on your arm and letting it go. It should snap right back into place. If it goes more slowly, you are getting dehydrated. Don’t drink alcohol or caffeine in super-hot weather, as they are dehydrating. 5. Heat can damage insulin, other medications, and test strips. The Joslin Clinic advises people to keep their insulin cool, but not on ice. If you take medicines with you while you’re away from home, get a cooler bag to keep your medicines and test strips in. 7 Reasons You Can't Stop Coughing

7 Reasons You Can't Stop Coughing

Facebook 0 Twitter 0 livefyre Email Print What's that cough? Everybody coughs; it's the number one illness-related reason people go to the doctor, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most cases of cough are temporary, says Peter Dicpinigaitis, MD, director of the Montefiore Cough Center and professor of clinical medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. But even a short-term cough can be a sign of a bigger health issue that needs to be addressed by a doctor. Here's how to narrow down the possible culpritsfrom asthma to pneumonia to whooping coughso you can get better, fast. A cough you've had for three weeks or less is most likely due to the common cold. Unfortunately, this coughwhich is mainly a dry cough, with some clear mucuscan persist for a month or more after the rest of your symptoms are gone. "The virus irritates nerve endings in your air passages, and they can stay sensitive for quite some time," says Dr. Dicpinigaitis. How to treat a cold virus cough: There's no cure for viral infections, so you'll have to wait this one out. If your barking is serious and over-the-counter cough suppressants don't provide relief, your doc may prescribe medicine to calm your cough reflex, says Gerard W. Frank, MD, clinical professor of medicine in pulmonary disease at UCLA. Over-the-counter decongestants or expectorants can also help thin out mucus so you can cough up more of it. If you've got a cough (wet or dry) that has lasted eight weeks or longer, you could be suffering from chronic postnasal dripmucus that accumulates in the sinuses and drips down the back of the throat, creating a tickling sensation that triggers a cough. There's no test for postnasal drip, says Dr. Frank, but you may also have a runny nose or congestion ( Continue reading >>

Can The Weather Really Worsen Arthritis Pain?

Can The Weather Really Worsen Arthritis Pain?

Can the weather really worsen arthritis pain? Faculty Editor, Harvard Health Publishing If you have arthritis, you may have noticed that the weather affects your symptoms. I hear it from my patients all the time. If its true that the weather can worsen arthritis pain, how does that work? Is there any scientific evidence to explain it? People have been asking these questions for many years without finding good answers. But thats not keeping researchers from trying to understand it better. Past studies examining the effect of rain, humidity, and other weather-related factors on symptoms of arthritis have been inconclusive, and in some cases, contradictory. Some suggest that the key variable is rising barometric pressure. Other studies found just the opposite that falling pressure could provoke joint pain or stiffness. There have even been attempts to artificially vary environmental conditions to mimic weather changes, such as placing arthritis sufferers in barometric chambers and varying the pressure up and down. Despite this, we still dont know whether it is one particular feature of the weather or a combination of features that matters. There are many potential factors humidity, temperature, precipitation, and barometric pressure among them. Even if we could precisely identify what about weather affects arthritis pain and stiffness, were still not sure why biologically speaking weather should have any impact on joint symptoms. Having reviewed the studies, I find myself not knowing how to answer my patients who ask me why their symptoms reliably worsen when the weather is damp or rain is coming, or when some other weather event happens. I usually tell them that, first, I believe there is a connection between weather and joint symptoms, and second, researchers have been Continue reading >>

Hot Environments - Health Effects And First Aid

Hot Environments - Health Effects And First Aid

Hot Environments - Health Effects and First Aid "Heat stress" is the "net [overall] heat load to which a worker may be exposed from the combined contributions of metabolic heat, environmental factors (i.e., air temperature, humidity, air movement, and radiant heat), and clothing requirements." Metabolic heat is the heat produced by the body through chemical processes, exercise, hormone activity, digestion, etc. [Reference: 2016 TLVs and BEIs: Threshold Limit Values for Chemical Substances and Physical Agents and Biological Exposure Indices. Cincinnati, Ohio: American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, 2016. p.214.] Other heat-related terms are defined at the end of this document in the Glossary of Terms . Heat may come from many sources. For example: In foundries, steel mills, bakeries, smelters, glass factories, and furnaces, extremely hot or molten material is the main source of heat. In outdoor occupations, such as construction, road repair, open-pit mining and agriculture, summer sunshine is the main source of heat. In laundries, restaurant kitchens, and canneries, high humidity adds to the heat burden. In all instances, the cause of heat stress is a working environment which can potentially overwhelm the body's ability to deal with heat. Most people feel comfortable when the air temperature is between 20C and 27C and when the relative humidity ranges from 35 to 60%. When air temperature or humidity is higher, people feel uncomfortable. Such situations do not cause harm as long as the body can adjust and cope with the additional heat. Very hot environments can overwhelm the body's coping mechanisms leading to a variety of serious and possibly fatal conditions. This OSH Answers document contains information about the health effects of hot environments Continue reading >>
