The main aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of combined therapy using acupressure therapy, hypnotherapy, and transcendental meditation (TM) on the blood sugar (BS) level in comparison with placebo in type 2 diabetic patients. We used convenience sampling for selection of patients with type 2 diabetes; 20 patients were recruited. For collection of data, we used an identical quasi-experimental design called nonequivalent control group. Therapy sessions each lasting 6090min were carried out on 10 successive days. We prescribed 2 capsules (containing 3g of wheat flour each) for each member of the placebo group (one for evening and one for morning). Pre-tests, post-tests, and follow-up tests were conducted in a medical laboratory recognized by the Ministry of Health and Medical Education of Iran. Mean BS level in the post-tests and follow-up tests for the experimental group was reduced significantly in comparison with the pre-tests whereas in the placebo group no changes were observed. Combined therapy including acupressure therapy, hypnotherapy, and TM reduced BS of type 2 diabetic patients and was more effective than placebo therapy on this parameter. Continue reading >>

Acupuncture Points Useful In Diabetes Control?

Acupuncture Points Useful in Diabetes Control? by Nancy Walsh Nancy Walsh, Staff Writer, MedPage Today Note that this study was published as an abstract and presented at a conference. These data and conclusions should be considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal. Patients with diabetes-associated gastroparesis experienced significant relief of nausea with "needleless" acupuncture, which may have important implications for their glucose control. Note that patients were instructed to apply the stimulators to acupuncture points p6, which is just above the wrist crease, and at ST36 on the leg for the active treatment. ORLANDO -- Diabetes patients with gastroparesis experienced significant relief of nausea with "needleless" acupuncture, which may have important implications for their glucose control, a small study suggests. Treatment for 4 weeks with watch-sized electrical stimulators placed on gastrointestinal-specific acupuncture points led to a 30% decrease from baseline in nausea in a group of 12 patients (P=0.005), Richard W. McCallum, MD, of Texas Tech University in El Paso, reported at the annual Digestive Disease Week here. The self-administered treatment also led to a 39% decrease in vomiting (P=0.055) and a 21% reduction in bloating (P=0.006). "We currently have few options to stimulate motility in patients whose stomachs are slow in emptying and develop related symptoms, particularly nausea, which is a devastating symptom that's underappreciated and certainly undertreated," McCallum said during a press briefing. "Acupuncture is a 4,000-year-old system in Chinese medicine in which stimulation of points on the skin that control the flow of 'qi' through channels known as meridians can influence pain and other symptoms, but controlled studies Continue reading >>

Type 1 Diabetes – Insulin Dependent – Is Caused By The Actual Lack Of Insulin Because Of Damage Of Β Cells In The Islets Of Langerhans.

Diabetes is defined as a disease characterized by an increased level of glucose in blood. It stems from the fact that the body is unable to transport glucose to the inside of cells. Thus, the level of glucose in the blood is too high, whilst cells starve to death. There are two types of diabetes: Type 1 diabetes – insulin dependent – is caused by the actual lack of insulin because of damage of β cells in the Islets of Langerhans. Type 2 diabetes – insulin-independent – is a metabolic disease, often linked with obesity. Primarily, it is characterized by resistance to insulin, relative lack of insulin and hyperglycemia. One of the most common diseases in the modern world, the World Health Organization estimates that there are 347 million people suffering from diabetes 1. According to the report prepared by pharmaceutical company Novonordisk from 2013, there are 3 million diabetics in Poland2. It is projected that, the prevalence of total diabetes (diagnosed and undiagnosed) in the United States will increase from its current level of about 1 in 10 adults to between 1 in 5 and 1 in 3 adults in 20503. It will not come as a surprise that the prevention and treatment of diabetes constitutes a serious challenge for modern medicine. In the case of type 1 diabetes, patients are treated with insulin, which is not produced by damaged cells of the pancreas. For a number of patients, everyday injections and diet are a problem. However, it has to be emphasized, that the production of insulin constituted a breakthrough in the treatment of this potentially lethal disease. In patients with type 2 diabetes, a change of lifestyle is recommended. The use of insulin is not recommended until it is necessary. It is commonly held that diabetes is incurable. Desperate patients sometime Continue reading >>

Acupuncture is an effective way to cure diabetes without any drugs. It is achieved through activating definite pressure points in the body, which helps in controlling the symptoms of diabetes by managing various metabolic activities and helps in maintaining the insulin level in the body. Type II diabetes can be effectively treated through acupuncture. However, make sure the procedure is performed by professionals. Mentioned below are five important acupressure points for treating diabetes. This acupressure point activates the spleen. This point is positioned in the inner region of the lower legs behind shinbones and just four fingers on top of the anklebones. Applying mild pressure on this point with slow and steady circular movements in clockwise direction can help cure diabetes. This has to be done for three minutes on both the legs every day. Continue doing this for about twelve weeks to see some results. This pressure point is called spleen-6 pressure point. It strengthens the spleen and improves its functions. It is related to the spleen, kidneys and liver. Hence, it can be used to cure any disorders in these organs. This acupressure point is effective for many problems down the waist. This is located just one palm width beneath the kneecap on the front side of the leg. It is exactly on the front side of the leg in the depression between the leg muscles and the shinbone. Applying mild pressure on this point with slow circular clockwise movements will help cure diabetes. This should be followed every day for three minutes for over 8 to 12 weeks of time. This would help to remove or flush the toxins produced in the body. Therefore, it is called the phlegm point. It is more beneficial if used with acupoint 5. This acupressure point is located on the sides of the foot Continue reading >>
