General Precautions When Travelling With Diabetes

General Precautions When Travelling With Diabetes

Travelling with Type 1 diabetes is the same as for people without diabetes. Like everyone, you must plan efficiently before travelling by land, sea or air. • Prior to the trip, schedule an appointment with your diabetes team as you will need to bring a letter on medical stationary stating you have diabetes and you use pens/pumps/meters. • Bring a written prescription with generic terms of medication you are taking in case you need to get extra supplies or need to visit a doctor when abroad. Photocopy all your relevant important documentation and give a copy to your travelling companion or keep a copy in separate luggage you are bringing. • Remember to always bring spare insulin (and spare pen devices), at least 2-3 times the normal amount you would use during the same timeframe. If using a pump, make sure you have adequate spare supplies you may need plus back up insulin. • More frequent testing may be necessary so you will need at least double your normal amount of glucose testing strips for the same timeframe plus a spare glucose meter. Don’t forget to bring ketone testing supplies also. Always split your supplies into two bags and if possible, give one set to a travelling companion in the event your luggage gets lost. • Look at your travel plans and check what vaccines are necessary. For information on what countries may need vaccines see Tropical Medical Bureau www.tmb.ie. They can provide you with detailed information on vaccines, malaria prevention and the latest health news tailored to your travel plans. It is important to note that there are no special restrictions for vaccinations due to diabetes. Furthermore, it is more important for a person with diabetes to actually get the recommended vaccinations, since illness will mean more difficult conseque Continue reading >>

An Update On Medtronic’s Minimed 670g System

An Update On Medtronic’s Minimed 670g System

This morning, the Medtronic Diabetes Group held a conference call for a small group of diabetes writers to give an update on its new MiniMed 670G system, otherwise known as the world’s first hybrid closed loop system. Louis Dias, Chief Patient Officer of Medtronic Diabetes and Mike Hill, Vice President of Marketing for Medtronic’s Intensive Insulin Management Business were both on the call, as was Karrie Hawbaker, Senior Manager of Social Media. First, a recap on what the system is and what it does: The MiniMed 670G system is a combination of an insulin pump and a continuous glucose monitor. What sets it apart from its predecessors—and, for that matter, every other pump on the market—is that it can actually give you insulin. This makes it a major step forward toward the goal of a truly closed loop system. How does the 670G system work? Users must program their insulin-to-carb ratios, calibrate the system twice a day with a blood glucose reading from a finger stick, and give the system a “meal announcement” when they’re about to eat by entering the number of grams of carbohydrate that they intend to consume. The system then uses the grams of carbohydrate users have entered and their insulin-to-carb ratio to estimate an initial bolus to cover the meal. In the hours that follow, the system makes tiny tweaks to basal rates in order to get blood sugar levels as close as possible to 120 mg/dL. This means that you don’t need to enter correction boluses and that there’s no longer such thing as dual wave or square boluses—the pump is taking care of it for you. How’s it different from the most recent MiniMed pump? Medtronic Diabetes’s current top-of-the-line pump is the MiniMed 630G system with Enlite Sensor. The 530G uses something called SmartGuard™ te Continue reading >>

Air Travel & Your Rights

Air Travel & Your Rights

What are some general things to keep in mind when travelling by air? Remember that most airlines are more than happy to assist passengers with special needs – if you need help, speak to an airline staff representative. To avoid any unexpected delays, you can also make arrangements with the airline ahead of time, if you know in advance that you will require additional assistance at any point during your journey. Always be sure to give yourself plenty of time. The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) recommends that you go through pre-boarding security well in advance of your flight, especially during peak travel periods, in case any additional screening is required. Always carry appropriate snacks with you in case your flight or in-flight meal is delayed, or the meal provided does not have enough carbohydrates (for those using insulin or other medications that may cause hypoglycemia). For more information about security screening procedures, please see additional questions and answers below. Be aware of time zone changes and schedule your meals and medications accordingly. Meet with your healthcare team in advance of your trip to work out timing of meals and medications, if needed. Also discuss with your healthcare team what to do in case you get sick during your flight or while you’re on holiday. If you choose to sleep while travelling by air, set the alarm on your watch or cell phone to wake you at meal or medication time. Try to do some form of activity during your journey: walk around in the terminal prior to boarding, consider doing simple stretch exercises in your seat or move your ankles in circles and raise your legs occasionally, or move around periodically in the aisles to help stretch your legs. Information relating to the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) Changes to the NDSS from 1 July 2016 | Overview | Access Points | Registrants | Products User research for NDSS Online Services Portal - March 2018 The NDSS supports people to manage their diabetes through access to information, services and government subsidised products. The Department funds Diabetes Australia to deliver information and support services to people living with diabetes registered with the NDSS. Each year, Diabetes Australia undertakes registrant research to measure satisfaction levels of NDSS services. This research will commence in March 2018. It will include some questions about Registrants views on the creation of a centralised NDSS online services portal. The NDSS online services portal would: simplify NDSS registration for those newly diagnosed with diabetes; provide online access to webinars and training courses; and offer information and notifications on changes to the NDSS. This research will help build the Department's understanding of Registrants needs. If you have any questions about the NDSS online services portal or want to be involved in further user research, please email the NDSS team . Request for Proposal Process to List Selected Diabetes Products on the NDSS Product Schedule The Australian Government foreshadowed changes to the NDSS in the 2015-16 Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook, which announced that the Australian Government will achieve further efficiencies through the sourcing and purchasing of selected products on the NDSS. These efficiencies are necessary to ensure the long-term integrity and sustainability of the NDSS, while ensuring a range of clinically effective products are available for NDSS registrants to effectively self-manage their diabetes. Diabetes & Travel - Mylife Diabetescare Australia

Diabetes & Travel - Mylife Diabetescare Australia

With the right preparation a short holiday or a long journey is just as feasible for people living with diabetes as it is for non-diabetics. But good planning is important in order to enable you to enjoy as many carefree days as possible. If you are travelling by car there is one thing that is especially important: You must measure your blood glucose level prior to starting your trip and at regular intervals throughout. Your most important goal is to prevent hypoglycaemic emergencies. Fast-acting hypo-aids, such as glucose or orange juice, should always be close at hand. If you are travelling by plane, the most important thing to remember is: Pack all of your diabetes supplies in your carry-on bag because hold luggage can take a different route or get lost. Also, by doing so, the temperature range for the insulin and the blood glucose test strips can be kept more stable In order to avoid hassles at security checkpoints or border controls, have your physician issue you a "medical certificate". This will certify your need to carry your insulin and diabetes supplies with you. Be sure to take plenty of backup supplies in addition to your normal diabetes supplies. Order your blood glucose test strips, insulin pump accessories, pen needles, etc., in a timely manner from your chemist or mail order supplier. Adjusting your insulin dose when changing time zones If the time difference between your home and your destination is no more than two hours, then it is usually not necessary to make any adjustments. But other arrangements will be necessary if the time difference is considerable. If you continue to administer your mealtime and correction insulin (bolus insulin) as usual, then you must adjust how you administer your delayed-action insulin/basal insulin. In other words, if y Continue reading >>

Rocktape Used To Assist Diabetes Patients

Rocktape Used To Assist Diabetes Patients

RockTape used to assist Diabetes Patients by rocadmin | Aug 10, 2017 | General News | 0 comments At RockTape we encourage lateral thinking. And this kind of thinking led a Perth lady, Megan Wassink, to develop a cool new business helping kids keep their diabetic monitors in place. Megan discovered that RockTape has the best adhesive of the kinesiology tapes and it was perfect for keeping her daughters diabetic monitor and pump in place. RockaDex was born! RockaDex uses RockTape to create cool designs for kids that make their medical devices look a little less medical. An awesome idea and she has changed the lives of many diabetic kids. The profits of her company go to support her daughters medical expenses, and to support other diabetes organisations. Your daughter has Type 1 diabetes which is a genetic condition where the body can no longer produce its own insulin instead insulin must be injected several times a day. That must have been a challenging diagnosis. How did you mentally and emotionally deal with that? When Hayley was diagnosed I knew nothing about Type 1, I didnt even realise there were different types of diabetes. Hayley was so sick before being diagnosed, we continued to take her to the doctors knowing that there was something wrong with our little girl. It was just before her second birthday and she had lost so much weight, had extreme thirst and was constantly wetting through her nappies! The doctors didnt pick up on the signs that we now know are typical signs of Type 1. I knew something was seriously wrong. At the time we were over 3 hours away from Princess Margaret Hospital, I put Hayley in the car and drove her there. Upon arriving at the hospital she was barely conscious and struggling to breathe. Hayley was put straight into ICU and we are very Continue reading >>
