Product Review: Dario Blood Glucose Monitoring System
A new little meter is on the market, and I think it’s a pretty cool little device! It’s the new Dario Smart Meter from LabStyle Innovations. It has had CE approval since September 2013, but was just approved here in the US in December 2015, and hit the market in March of this year. It’s been about a month since I received the new Dario meter. This little meter system is not a new concept, but I feel it has solved a few problems maybe some other similar apps and devices have or have had while creating a few of its own. Features: Small, compact, all-in-one design (slightly larger than a lighter or lipgloss size). Compared to other meter kits on the market, this is the smallest one I’ve used. And since it is all-in-one, there are no separate parts to keep up with. It’s easy to handhold and doesn’t feel big or overly awkward to carry in your pocket. Compatible with iPhone and Android Dario App (iPhone only in the US currently though) The app is intuitive with basic logging features yet smart design, and syncs to the desktop application as well with a great use of colors for readings that are low, lower end of normal, normal, higher end of normal, or high rather than just three colors to differentiate low, within range, or high. Advantages: Its design allows the user to only have to carry the device as a whole: it carries the strips in a removable cartridge, the lancing device is built in, and the strip reader device is tucked into the side and snaps into place when not in use. Using it is simple and straightforward: open the app, plug the strip dongle into the phone’s headphone jack, insert a strip, apply blood and the result is seen within 6 seconds. We were excited to hear the news recently that theall-in-one Dario meter is finally available here in the United States. This system from Israel-based LabStyle Innovations has been in the works for years, launched internationally in 2013 and under FDA review since then. The U.S. agency gave Dario the go-ahead in December,and in mid-March the little plug-in meter finally hit the market here. This "all-in-one" system is a pretty sleek plastic device about the size of a cigarette lighter (seriously -- 4 inches long, less than an inch wide), with the lancet fingerpoker built into thebottom and a cartridge of 25 proprietary strips housed on top. The actual meter part is a little black square with jack plug, and it disconnects from the side of housing so you can connect it directly to iPhone or tablet whenever you want to view and work with your data. Note that the Dario meter currently rolling out in the U.S. is iPhone compatible only, as the company is still awaiting FDA approval for Android compatibility here. I told him give me a minute and I pulled out my IPhone 7 which retrieves information from my husbands IPhone 6 to be able to tell him my average blood sugar. Not only that it would show my Highest and lowest blood sugars over a span of time. He had never seen anyone use Dario. The next time I go, I plan to print out the information. He thought it was very easy to get the information he needed without having to calculate it himself. So Im hooked. I can wait for the approval of the IPhone 7 adapter. Whats really nice is that I can have my account on two phones and that theyll sync the information. The Dario Smart Meter's unique design is extremely compact and integrates directly with you smart phone allowing you to track and monitor your blood glucose, and much more, on your phone. The meter meets the 2013 ISO standards for blood glucose meter accuracy. The Dario Smart Phone certainly has its advantages but there are also some possible cons to consider too. The Darios smart phone integration means it is much easier to analyse data than most meters can offer. The Dario app charts every blood glucose test you take with the meter, allowing you to easily view your log and charts of your results. Additionally, the app lets you chart much more, including: A comprehensive list of tags, including your own notes The Dario app keeps tracks of your results, including how many highs and lows youre getting and even provides an HbA1c estimate from your blood glucose readings. The app also allows you to share your results with anyone you choose, such as your family or your doctor. The one main disadvantage of the Dario Smart Meter is that, should your phone run out of charge, you would be without the use of your Dario Smart Meter too. Review: My Dario Smartphone Glucose Meter
I was recently given a Dario Smartphone Glucose Meter and some test strips to try from my friends at Perth Diabetes Care. I squealed with excitement at the prospect of taking that little orange device home with me, because I tend to get pretty excited about integrating my diabetes tasks with my screentime. There was no expectation that I would blog about the Dario, and all opinions expressed here are my own. The Dario is a really nifty little device. I was surprised at Dario’s relatively low key launch into Australia, considering that many bloggers in the UK were given meters to try some time ago. If it weren’t for the odd sponsored post on Facebook or my perusing the Diabetes WA online shop, I wouldn’t have known it had hit our shores. So, it’s an all in one glucose meter. Lancing device at one end, test strip vials stored on the opposite end. For some crazy reason, I thought the whole device clipped onto the bottom of my smartphone. So there I was on the first night I brought it home, trying to attach the whole damn thing to my phone! Until I realised that only the little test strip port connects via the headphone jack. You also need to download the Dario app to your phone, and register to get started. I was able to register with my Facebook account, which is a big plus in my book – one less password to remember! Once you’ve opened the app and connected the little test strip port, you can insert a strip and receive a glucose reading on your phone screen. The Dario app also had features like a bolus calculator, food databases, data sharing and an estimated hba1c. The data entry screen shown below gave me plenty of time after testing to input carbs and calculate an insulin dose, so long as I didn’t press the tick to exit.
