Contour Next One Bluetooth Connected Glucose Meter Cleared By Fda

Ascensia Diabetes Care, a company based in Basel, Switzerland, won FDA clearance to bring to the U.S. market its CONTOUR NEXT ONE blood glucometer. The device has Bluetooth wireless connectivity that allows diabetics to upload their readings to a paired app on their iOS or Android smartphones. The CONTOUR DIABETES app provides historical charts of blood sugar levels and lets patients understand how their diet and physical activity impacts those. This works best if the patient religiously enters the details of his/or her food intake and all the activities that take place throughout the day. All the readings and entered information can be uploaded to the “cloud” and reviewed on a computer. Reports can be emailed to one’s physician or family members to make sure everyone is on the same page and helping to keep the symptoms of diabetes in check. The device works just fine on its own without the app, displaying readings on a built-in screen. An indicator on the left side of the device turns green, yellow, or red depending on how out of normal range the last reading was. Ascensia claims this is one of the most accurate blood glucose meters on the market, achieving ±8.4% accuracy on 95% of readings when it was compared against laboratory equipment in a small trial with human subjects. The CONTOUR NEXT ONE will be available for purchase in the U.S. early next year and the app will show up on Apple App Store and Google Play for downloading. The CONTOUR® NEXT ONE system features an easy-to-use blood glucose smart meter which links to a mobile device via Bluetooth® connectivity. The meter connects to the CONTOURTM DIABETES app, a mobile app that collects, stores and analyzes patient blood glucose measurements delivered to it by the meter. The blood glucose measurements can be used to identify patterns and trends that may help patients understand how certain aspects of their daily activities affect their blood glucose. Robert Schumm, Head of Ascensia Diabetes Care US, said: "This is an innovative new option for people living with diabetes. The system combines the remarkable accuracy of the CONTOUR® NEXT ONE meter with the easy-to-use features of the CONTOURTM DIABETES app and is designed to provide insights that may help people manage their diabetes in a better way." He added: "We believe the future of healthcare lies in connecting points of care. The first step in that journey for diabetes is to provide a connected system which can add value for people living with diabetes. Today, fewer than two percent of people living with diabetes use a connected meter. CONTOUR® NEXT ONE is designed to be simple-to-use, and can meet the needs of a broad group of users. The FDA clearance paves the way to providing this option for all those who may benefit from it." Ascensia Diabetes Care expects to make the CONTOUR® NEXT ONE system available in the U.S. in early 2017. The CONTOUR™ DIABETES app will be available for download from the Apple App Store (iOS) and Google Play (Android). The aim of the study was to assess the accuracy of the CONTOUR blood glucose monitoring system (BGMS) according to the International Organization for Standardization's International Standard 15197 (ISO 15197:2003) guidelines and to more stringent criteria. Finger stick blood samples from 105 subjects with diabetes (25 with type 1, 77 with type 2, and 3 with type unknown) were tested using the CONTOUR BGMS and YSI glucose analyzer. 99.3% of results were within ISO 15197:2003 criteria (15 mg/dl of YSI results at glucose concentrations <75 mg/dl and 20% at glucose concentrations 75 mg/dl). Additionally, 96.7% of results were accurate according to more stringent criteria (15 mg/dl of YSI results for glucose concentrations <100 mg/dl and 15% for glucose concentrations 100 mg/dl). Error grid analysis showed that 99.3% and 0.7% of results were within zones A and B, respectively. The CONTOUR BGMS exceeded both the minimum acceptable accuracy based on ISO 15197:2003 and the more stringent accuracy criteria. Dexcom Adds Ascensias Glucose Meter To Cgm Bundle

Dexcom adds Ascensias glucose meter to CGM bundle While data from the Dexcom G5 CGM system is used to inform treatment decisions, the system must be calibrated regularly. (Dexcom) Dexcom and Ascensia Diabetes Care have struck a deal to provide the latters blood glucose meter as part of the formers continuous glucose monitoring system for patients covered by Medicare. The bundle, which comprises Ascensias Contour Next One blood glucose monitoring system and Dexcoms G5 CGM system, is now available for patients under Medicare who are eligible for therapeutic glucose monitoring, according to a statement. While glucose meters require a fingerprick to measure blood glucose, CGMs measure glucose levels in the interstitial fluid through a sensor inserted just under the skin. The Dexcom G5 system transmits glucose data to a smartphone or smartwatch every five minutes, where patients may view their glucose data trends. Like this story? Subscribe to FierceBiotech! Set remindersto test and add your healthcare professionals appointments to your diary. Canadian industry standards for blood glucose meters have an acceptable error range of 15%1 from lab readings. That means that readings on a meter can be 15% higher or lower, compared to the lab. CONTOUR NEXT ONE is the most accurate system developed by Ascensia Diabetes Care shown to deliver remarkable accuracy. The CONTOUR NEXT ONE meter results go beyond the minimum Canadian industry standard for blood glucose meters2. In a clinical study, the CONTOUR NEXT ONE meter demonstrated 95% of results were within 8.4%3 of a lab reading. 1 Current regulation based on Health Canada recognized ISO 15197:2013 standard requires results within 15% range, specifically: 95% of results must fall within 0.83 mmoL/L for blood glucose concentrations <5.55 mmoL/L and within 15% for blood glucose concentrations 5.55 mmoL/L. 2 CONTOUR NEXT ONE meter meets 10% accuracy vs. laboratory method, specifically: 97.4% of results within 10% for blood glucose concentrations 5.55 mmol/L, and 100% of results within 0.56 mmol/L accuracy vs. laboratory method for blood glucose concentrations <5.55 mmol/L. 3In a clinical study, conducted in accordance with the requirements of ISO 15197:2013, the CONTOUR NEXT ONE not only met and exceeded the minimum requirements of the standard but an ad hoc analysis determined where 95% of results fell during the study, which was within 0.47 mmol/L or 8.4% of the laboratory reference value for glucose concentrations <5.55 mmoL/L or 5.55 mmoL/L, respectively, when tested via subject obtained capillary fingertip results (patients). Test Driving Ascensia's New Contour Next One Meter

Test Driving Ascensia's New Contour Next One Meter

It's often the little details that translate to the biggest benefits when it comes to taking care of your diabetes. That was top of mind for me after trying out the new Ascensia Contour Next ONE meter, the latest in the line of Contour meters from the company formerly known as Bayer. Approved by the FDA in November 2016, this Contour Next ONE meter sports a next-generation design with subtle differences from its predecessors, and it's the first app-enabled meter Ascensia has brought our way in the Contour line. I must say, I'm impressed with Ascensia of late, for what they've produced and the innovations in their pipeline that include partnering with Glooko for better data-sharing access on multiple platforms. Let's dig into this new meter itself... Meeting the New Contour Next ONE The new Next ONE model is an upgrade of the Contour Next USB meter, which was discontinued as of Dec. 31, 2016. I'd been using that meter for several years, including a version that links wirelessly to my former Medtronic insulin pump. I've loved the meter for its finger-sized portability, and now that I'm disconnected from an insulin pump and on Multiple Daily Dosing instead, I no longer need the linking capability. Fortunately, my test strip supply is fully stocked and this new meter uses the same Contour Next test strips, so it doesn't require a new prescription, making for an easy transition. Sleeker, Slimmer: While the form factor is mostly unchanged, it is a bit thinner and sleeker in design. The earlier generation Contour Next meter had a button on the top side of the meter to turn it on and off, plus three buttons on the meter face allowing you to select and scroll through meter menus. Now, the Contour Next ONE has eliminated all of those buttons except for a single round circle 'OK' Continue reading >>

Bg Meter Accuracy: 10 Meters Put To The Test!

Bg Meter Accuracy: 10 Meters Put To The Test!

Are blood glucose meters accurate? A few months ago, I read a post on blood glucose meter (in)accuracy that was quite alarming. Chris Hannemann, T1D and OpenAPS’er, tested five popular blood glucose meters for accuracy and found major discrepancies. The overall variability between the meters was roughly ±11 %, and two of the meters — both from the same manufacturer — showed major bias. Chris had been using one of those meters to calibrate his CGM and consistently found that his lab-measured A1C would come in a full percentage point higher than his CGM average would predict (e.g., the meter-calibrated CGM data would correspond to an A1C of 6%, but laboratory-measured A1C would actually be 7%). As someone who wears a CGM and always strives to achieve an A1C of ~6.0% or lower, this post freaked me out. If I’m calibrating my CGM with a meter whose results are always off by that much… how can I be sure about reaching my targets?!? But I was also skeptical when I saw Chris’ post, because my A1C has always matched my predictions (based on my CGM average). So, I decided to run my own test on 10 popular meters from various manufacturers. Much to my relief, all 10 meters produced very similar results for each blood sample, with an overall between-meter variability of just under 6%. Below I describe the test and discuss the results. And, in another post, I explain some reasons why your average BG on your meter might not always correspond with your A1C results. (Key point: It doesn’t necessarily mean your meter is bad!) Bayer's Contour Usb Blood Glucose Monitoring System

Bayer's Contour Usb Blood Glucose Monitoring System

Reviewed by Dave Joffe, CDE, FACA, Editor-in-Chief and Alexander Brown, PharmD Candidate Florida, A & M University There are a lot of patients who, like me, have to be on the cutting edge technology-wise. We were the first to get an iPhone or a Droid and we ran to get an iPad when it first came out. The problem with these devices is the learning curve. It takes so long to get good at using the product that most of us never learn the best features. Now Bayer has jumped into cutting-edge blood glucose monitoring with a system called CONTOUR USB that is as high tech as an iPad but as simple to use as a watch. Bayers CONTOUR USB has a connector which plugs directly into a computers USB port and loads Bayers GLUCOFACTS Deluxe software. This makes it easy for not only the patient, but also for doctors, to view the results of the patients history and trends. Bayers CONTOUR USB meter is small, sleek and very user-friendly. The screen displays bright colors making it easy to read and a built-in illuminated strip port helps with testing in the dark. Its equipped with a permanent rechargeable battery and can hold 2000 blood glucose memory tests, including 500MB of extra memory. To help the patient individualize his or her own therapy, the CONTOUR USB comes with an option that allows the patient to program their personal HI/LO (high/low) target range (based on their doctors recommendation). There is also an auto-log feature which helps mark pre and post meal tests in the digital logbook. I asked one of my interns, Alexander Brown,PharmD Candidate, Florida A & M University, to test the CONTOUR USB and here is what he had to say. Dave asked me to use Bayers CONTOUR, Bayers CONTOUR USB and another brand of blood glucose monitoring system during my 8 week rotation, and I found Bayers Continue reading >>
