Can Chayote Squash Lower Blood Sugar?
Written by Jessica Bruso; Updated April 18, 2015 Eating moderate amounts of chayote may have health benefits. Does Grapefruit Stabilize Your Blood Glucose? Chayote is a nutritious squash, containing just 38 calories per cup and providing 21 percent of the daily value for vitamin C, 14 percent of the DV for manganese and 18 percent of the DV for dietary fiber. Some preliminary evidence shows it may have some specific health benefits, including potentially reducing blood sugar levels after meals and limiting insulin resistance. An animal study published in Food & Function in 2011 found that drinking chayote juice before meals may help limit increases in blood sugar from a starchy meal. Further research is necessary to verify whether this effect occurs in people, as well as the amount of chayote a person would have to take in to experience this blood-sugar-lowering effect. A review article published in Pharmacognosy Magazine in 2014 noted that chayote may also limit the actions of an enzyme called *protein-tyrosine phosphatase 1*, which is at least partially responsible for people developing insulin resistance and thus type-2 diabetes. Further research is necessary to determine whether this effect occurs in people as well as in the laboratory before chayote squash can be recommended for lowering blood sugar levels. While eating chayote squash is healthy in moderate amounts, you don't want to go overboard. Chayote may have a blood-pressure-lowering effect, so **check with your doctor to make sure it is safe for you if you're on blood pressure medications.** It can also act as a diuretic, so don't use it if you're taking medications with this same effect. Chayote tastes similar to cucumbers and summer squash and can be used in the same way you use these vegetables. It goes Continue reading >>

In studies carried out by researchers from CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), the juices of 13 commonly available vegetables were found to be inhibiting the activity of an enzyme associated with development of type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity. Ashok Kumar Tiwari, principal scientist and his group carried out the research whose findings were published recently in Pharmacologia, an international scientific journal of Science Reuters, U.K. Talking to The Hindu, Dr. Tiwari said the phenomenon of insulin resistance was generally more in South Asians than other ethnic groups. Among them, radish was the most potent vegetable, followed by bottle gourd in down-regulating or inhibiting the activity of enzymeProtein-Tyrosine Phosphatase 1 beta which plays a role in increasing insulin resistance and decreasing insulin sensitivity. Superfood Chayote: Why This Staple In Jamaica Should Be A Staple On Your Table
Superfood chayote: Why this staple in Jamaica should be a staple on your table Chayote is a fast-growing, sun-loving, nutritious vegetable that, left untethered, can completely take over a garden, fence or tree in your yard. In fact, thats what happened to me. I recently found vines of chayotes sprawling across several of my trees! I totally forgot that I had bought one from Whole Foods a few years ago and planted it in my yard. I was able to pick three mature chayotes from the tree to eat -- a little taste of home. I grew up eating chayote, or cho-cho as we called it. But depending on where you live, you may know chayote by the name of christophene, mirliton, susu, chuchu or even vegetable pear. My mom told me that it was good for diabetes and high blood pressure . Because she suffered from both maladies, our diet of course included heavy use of chayote in soups, beef stews and side dishes paired with fish. I even saw her boil chayote and eat it by itself. Here in the United States, I occasionally see chayote at Whole Foods and, naturally, I always buy some. I use it in a variety of side dishes. Not only does it taste good, taking on the flavor of the dish, but its also a rich source of nutrients such as: So was my mom right about chayotes health benefits? Lets see: Vitamin C may help you reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, including coronary heart disease and stroke. It also may help lower blood pressure , and may be beneficial for diabetics (who are often vitamin C deficient ). Vitamin K is important for bone health and helping your blood clot. Vitamin B3 is needed for a healthy digestive system, nervous system and skin. Some people even take it for lowering cholesterol. Vitamin B6 is used for more than 100 enzyme reactions involved in metabolism, brain deve Continue reading >>
