Diabetes Education Classes at the University of Michigan The team of educators at the University of Michigan Health System knows that learning to manage your diabetes can be challenging. Our certified team of diabetes experts wants to empower you to take charge of your diabetes so that you may live a healthy, fulfilling life. Our Diabetes Education Program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association, and has been certified by the Michigan Department of Community Health since June 2001. The recognition and certification process is based on National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education, the American Diabetes Association and MDCH requirements. Classes are led by our Diabetes Education Program staff. The team consists of certified diabetes educator nurses and dietitians. We have expertise in diabetes devices, with certification in training, prep and self-management for insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors (CGM). Our dietitians hold certificates of training in adult weight management by the Commission on Dietetic Registration. St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) Diabetes Education Program The Diabetes Education Program is a diabetes self-management education program certified by the Michigan Department of Community Health and accredited by the American Association of Diabetes Educators. Our 10 hour program is led by pharmacists and dieticians. The program includes a one-on-one individual assessment, individual and group educational classes, and an individualized meal plan. Classes are offered during the morning, afternoon, evening and select Saturdays to accommodate your schedule. Many patients request to bring along a family member or friend. There is no additional charge for them to attend with you. We offer informative, convenient diabetes education classes. Classes are held on the SJMO campus.
