With the first glimpses of some sunshine last weekend, we've seen a few ladies asking about ice cream & ice lollies in our Facebook support group and so whilst this was on my list of posts coming soon, I've brought it forward for all you eager ladies that are craving ice cream and let's face it, who cares what the weather is doing, we love ice cream! So can we eat ice cream, ice lollies and frozen yoghurt with gestational diabetes? Here we'll share hints & tips and our best finds... Diabetic & sugar free ice cream Diabetic or sugar free ice cream is often the first thing ladies turn to with gestational diabetes. There are lots of these 'diabetic' ice creams on the market, some like Frank's are widely available in many supermarkets and it's common to see diabetic ice creams in independent ice cream parlours. These ice creams are fine to eat with gestational diabetes but you shouldn't have to pay more for these 'diabetic' products and should be aware of the ingredients used. Diabetic ice creams often contain high amounts of artificial sweeteners (sometimes listed as polyols or sugar alcohols) which may cause gastric upsets, bloating, cramps, wind and diarrhoea. Sorbitol and mannitol can be the main culprit for causing gastric upset, but some people struggle with other sweeteners causing gastric upsets too. Natural sweeteners are often better tolerated than artificial. Diabetic ice creams can sometimes have a funny after taste or texture too, so whilst they shouldn't send your blood sugar levels soaring, you may find alternatives which suit you better. Eating with Diabetes: Desserts and Sweets By Amy Poetker, Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator 11/22/2010 Id be willing to bet that most everyone has been toldand therefore believesthat people with diabetes cannot have any sugar and are resigned to living without dessert for the rest of their lives. Well, as a Certified Diabetes Educator, I'm here to tell you that this is a myth. People with diabetes can eat sugar, desserts, and almost any food that contains caloric sweeteners (molasses, honey, maple syrup, and more). Why? Because people with diabetes can eat foods that contain carbohydrates, whether those carbohydrates come from starchy foods like potatoes or sugary foods such as candy. Its best to save sweets and desserts for special occasions so you dont miss out on the more nutritious foods your body needs. However, when you do decide to include a sweet treat, make sure you keep portions small and use your carbohydrate counting plan . The idea that people with diabetes should avoid sugar is decades old. Logically, it makes sense. Diabetes is a condition that causes high blood sugar. Sugary foods cause blood sugar levels to increase. Therefore people with diabetes should avoid sugary foods in order to prevent hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) and keep their diabetes under control. However, simply avoiding sugary foods does not go very far in terms of controlling blood sugar. Here's why. The other day, after a casual dinner at home, my wife and I went out for ice cream. We'd opted to leave the air-conditioned safety of our home on this 90+ degree day, to head for an ice cream parlor that's just a short stroll from our house. As we stood there pondering the particular ice cream creations that sounded best, I glanced at my Dexcom CGM to see where my blood sugar happened to be and what that would mean for my carb counting and insulin dosing. Seeing a 97 mg/dL on my receiver, I smiled and rattled off the number to my wife who had already moved toward the counter to tell the clerk her decision. I rarely deviate from choosing either a plain scoop of vanilla, or an 'unfancy' single-scoop hot fudge sundae. But in this moment, I decided to go with a single scoop of rocky road, full of chocolatey goodness and riddled with marshmallows and nuts. I was treating myself, after all. A woman nearby had apparently overheard the first part of our conversation and realized I was talking about diabetes. She shot me a look before saying, "You can't eat that!" Without more than a second's hesitation, I shot back a quick, decisive response: "Yes, I can!" That started a back and forth that I would have preferred to avoid, about how this woman was nosing in on a private matter that didn't concern her -- one that she also had no personal insight into and no context as to who I was or how I was managing my diabetes and this particular food choice. Took all my willpower not to eat the ice cream already in the fridge as its high in sugars and equally high in carbs. Has anyone found a good ice cream (preferably a bar/drumstick so I can control portions better) that don't mess up their numbers? Are the Skinny Cow ones pretty good? I don't feel like standing in the ice cream aisle later and looking at all the things I can't have...lol. I really liked these Greek frozen yogurt bars vanilla bean flavor was REALLY delicious, and Greek yogurt being higher in protein helped too! I eat them with nuts too to help boost some protein. I think the brand was Yasso or something like that The snickers ice cream bars have been found to do really well for bedtime snack! I think it may be due to the nuts in it?! It has 18g of carbs. My fasting numbers are always good, the women on the gestational diabetes fb page I follow suggested them. So much better than the Breyers low carb chocolate bars, but those work for me too! :) So weird, I had a medium ice today and I checked my sugar an hour after.. 108. It was my first cheat snack ever I thought my number would be much higher. I think a little icecream wouldn't hurt! I like Bryers Carb Smart chocolate ice cream. I put almonds in it so it almost tastes like rocky road. Carb Smart also has fudge bars too. Helps with the ice cream cravings. I eat 1/2 cup of haagen Daz vanilla, added cinnamon and almonds, as my bedtime snack every night. Great fasting #s doing this and it's my one sweet of the day! I can actually have a McDonalds ice cream cone and be okay! Plus, I like the Breyer's Carb balance chocolate and I put almonds on it and I'm ok! You can only have a cup tho, but it cures my cravings! Hi there. I'm kind of curious about some of your rules - I also have GD and have to test 4 times a day and have to count carbs, but I am allowed fruit and sugar if it fits into my plan. Also, nothing about dairy was ever mentioned to me. In fact, my dietitian recommended I eat a cup of full fat ice cream every night before bed. I'm wondering why they are being so strict with you. I was worried about losing weight also. The first week I lost a pound but I put it back on the second week. Since then I have gained a pound a week and my doctor is happy with that. I've been doing the diet for going on 2 months. If you were normal weight and not eating out of control, I don't think losing weight will be an issue. You just might gain slower. I have found that I have to eat MORE than I want to. Pregnancy has killed my appetite and I have lost 14 pounds overall. I gained 5 with the first week of GD, but that was while making myself actually sick from forcing so much food into me to get 60g of carbs at every meal, but those 5 pounds were gone two weeks later. Then I was told I could go down to 45g, which has been better. No restrictions on sugar, fat, etc. Just looking at carbs. You get 60 carbs at every meal??I only get 45, and that's max and seems to raise my blood sugar to over the recommended limit of 135 after a meal. Hmm...sounds like different doctors are allowing different things- less of a science and more of an opinion? Yeah, it was really shocking for me to find out just how much I need to eat! My first meal of the day needs to be 15-30 though, and I've found that the lower the better since that's my body's worst time, it seems. Cutting out just about all carbs got my blood sugar under control and I lost like 25 - 30 pounds by the time my daughter's were born both times. The human body needs a certain amount of carbs to live and eating like that forever is not a healthy option. I rapidly regained the weight afterwards too. My blood sugar was fine after they were born and then when my youngest almost turned 1, I noticed that same tingleing in my feet when I awoke every morning and started checking my blood sugars again. I made an appointment with my family doctor and sure enough I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. My fasting blood sugar count was 119 at that appointment. The only blood sugar count that seems to be off is the morning fasting one each day. The rest all come out fine. At least I thought they were high. There are so many differing opinions as to what is "high" and what is "normal" that now I am totally confused! My fasting blood sugar was 130 this morning but then my birthday was yesterday and I had a piece of "sugar free" cake and carb smart chocolate ice cream a bit late last night before bed. Given that fact, I would have been shocked if it hadn't been high this morning. My problem is this, who has the correct info on what is considered high or not about blood sugar counts. Because it seems to change with who does the research or who you talk to. I do not even know if I really am diabetic at this point. My morning blood sugar is the only one that seems to be off. Finally googled Breyer's carb smart, found their website and you can search by product for a retailer in your area. Turns out, my local Hannaford carried it. I have a Shaw's right by my house so I don't go to Hannaford that often (although it is cheaper sometimes). Bought myself a carton of Chocolate and will be testing it out tonight. Hope it works well for you Carolyn. I really like it. Right now i'm hooked on the chocolate almond bars. Portion control with ice cream is hard for me...so the bars make it easier. Lauren - posted on 04/22/2009 ( 8 moms have responded ) Dylan's birthday was at the beginning of the month and he has had the opportunity (with going out to dinner and parties) to have more ice cream than normal and I am SHOCKED at how high his numbers get. Normally I will give him about 2-3T of ice cream after dinner on one of those kiddie cones and it really doesn't affect his numbers. Two weeks ago we went to Friendly's and he had a sundae for dessert after dinner and we gave him twice his normal dose of insulin to cover the ice cream. about 5 hours after dinner and dessert his number was in the high 300s; we did a correction shot and kept an eye on him all night. So the next two times he had ice cream we tried splitting the dose; half at dinner and then half 2 hours later at bedtime and again he was high overnight. we did give him his normal bedtime snack and maybe we shouldn't when he has ice cream like that. Gestational Diabetes confirmed...Please share your stories! Last week it was confirmed that I have Gestational diabetes. Everything else looks great "Baby Luke" is just bigger then they want him to be right at 4 lbs now. I was wondering for the ones of you that has had it could you share your success stories? I don't have any personal stories, but I had a friend with GD. She was huge toward the end, then she had him 2.5 weeks early...no induction, just went into labor on her own. And in spite of the fact that they measured him to be around 8lbs according to u/s even that early, he was in the lower 6lb range... So theoretically he still would've been in a normal range had she gone a few more weeks...maybe upper 7s or lower 8lb range. She was fine after delivery and so was he. I had GD with my first (only for the last 2 weeks) and then absolutely had it with my twins. Both times it was diet controlled. I am just planning on it this time as well and am already eating the diet(since about 21 weeks) and testing my sugars 4 times a day. I will be tested for it on Friday. With my first I was induced at 37 weeks (not related to GD) and he was 8 pounds 4 ounces and my twins came on their own at 35w6d (they were 6.5 pounds and 6.11 pounds). None of them had any problems and neither did I before or after birth. My kids were big, but we are big people too. I am 6' and my husband is 6'6", so we just plan on it-lol! I haven't had a negative experience with the GD and I hope yours will be the same! SO I'm 24W5D, and I just found out I have gestational diabetes...glucose level is quite high. Anybody have any experience? I'm concerned about diet, since I've never monitored my caloric intake, or carbs, or protein, etc., and need to eat a bit to gain the necessary pregnancy weight. Ahh! Help?? Hi there. I have gestational diabetes. They should be sending you to see a dietician. I can tell you what I eat but they will give you a diet that suits you.....if you are already overweight they will have you eat less carbs than someone who is of average weight. One thing that is the same for everyone is NO SUGAR or anything with sugar in it. After seeing the dietician I have stuck to the meal plan she gave me and I've lost 13 lbs. My Dr. is fine with this as I am overweight already and from the U/S results the weight is coming off me and the baby is growing normally. I've been dealing with this now for 7 weeks so if you have any specific questions I'd be happy to answer them! Thanks Rivergirl...I will definitely have questions! I'm going to a class at the hospital today to learn about meal plans, etc. Wish me luck! I have GD. My dietitian told me that I can have sugar, but rather to watch the carb intake. My allowance for carbs is monitored. I can have 45 grams of carbs for b'fast, 30 grams for snacks (1 after b'fast and 1 after lunch), and then 60 grams of carbs for lunch and dinner......I then take my blood sugar 2 hours later and it is supposed to stay below 120. When Natalie Thompson Cooper was diagnosed with gestational diabetes in her first pregnancy, at age 28, she was very concerned. The condition, which affects at least one in seven pregnancies to as many as one in five, causes blood sugars to rise abnormally high, called hyperglycemia. 1 Natalie knew hyperglycemia bathed her unborn daughter in glucose, putting the fetus at risk for a wide range of potential complications, including miscarriage, birth defects, macrosomia (very large size), high blood pressure, birth trauma, and higher rates of C-section and even stillbirth. 2 Moreover, gestational diabetes (GD) — also called ‘carbohydrate intolerance of pregnancy’ — greatly increases the risk that the mother and her offspring will both face future health problems, such as much higher rates of eventual type 2 diabetes, metabolic conditions, and cardiovascular disease. 3 GD is one of the most common and significant complications of pregnancy. Prenatal guidelines the world over recommend the routine screening of all pregnant women and then, if positive, strict management, starting with dietary therapy, then if that does not work, insulin injections. 4 However, to this day, what constitutes the best “dietary therapy” is hotly debated, with some researchers proposing a diet high in complex carbohydrates (60% carbs) and others lower carbohydrates (40% carbs). 5 However, the recommended “lower carb” GD diet is still far higher than the under 20 g per day of the strict low-carb high-fat or ketogenic diet.
