What Are The Best Milk Options For People With Diabetes?

Many people have childhood memories of parents urging them to drink lots of milk. When you’re a child, you typically have to drink whatever milk your parents provided for you. It may have been a more traditional option such as whole milk or a sweet alternative such as almond milk. Now that you’re the one doing the choosing, you can pick the best type of milk for you. If you have diabetes, you should know that not all types of milk are beneficial for you. Although you need the nutritious calcium and protein found in milk, it’s important to note the saturated fats, carbohydrates, and sugar levels in each. This information will help you pick the best milk for your dietary needs. People with diabetes are not able to make, or use, insulin effectively. Insulin is a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar. When insulin isn’t doing its job efficiently, blood sugar levels can spike. There are two kinds of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. No matter which type you have, managing your sugar intake is important. Sugar is a type of carbohydrate, which is why carb counting is often recommended for people with diabetes. People with diabetes may also have high cholesterol or triglycerides in th Continue reading >>

    G'day Melissa.
Sorry, we cannot answer any of those questions. The answers are completely different for each individual and mostly unknown even if you know all the details about a person's diabetes problems.
Why do you ask? Do you have diabetes yourself or are you asking on behalf of another person?

  3. Melissa n ms

I am asking on behalf of myself. I was diagnosed about 4 years ago. My current A1C is about 9.5. I have begun to spill glucose and protein in my urine. Just curious how long this will take.

Drop inches from your waistline in record time: http://sixpackshortcuts.com/rd2C8 Hey guys whats up Jonny here today to break down the top 5 absolute worst breakfast choices. Food research shows that starting your day with a healthy breakfast will aid weight loss goals by curbing mid-afternoon snack attacks and binge eating. So lets get right into it starting with number 5! -- Video Breakdown: 2:20 - 5.) Cereal: Most of us past the early teenage years have already cut out the cocoa puffs and captain crunch by now however more mature and so-called healthy cereal options such as many fiber-friendly, dried fruit, whole oat and nut cluster options are not actually the weight-loss breakfast solutions that they are marketed to be Most of these cereals are actually packed with added sugar, preservatives and even use hydrogenated oils in the manufacturing process making them nearly JUST as bad of a choice as Fruit Loops. Healthy alternative to promote weight loss: If dairy is your thing and the cereal plus milk is your fix, try instead choosing 1 cup of plain non-fat greek yogurt, packed with protein and containing no fat - throw in some raw almonds, rolled oats, or fresh fruit on top for added texture. 2:56 - 4.) Bagel and cream cheese: Bagels are made with processed flours that induce rapid insulin spikes, leading to fat gain - Cream cheese is also packed with high amounts of fats and crank up the overall calorie count - and NOT in a good way! Healthy alternative to promote weight loss: Cut the calories in HALF by instead toasting an Ezekiel english muffin, 1 tbsp natural peanut butter or sugar free jelly - Ezekiel flourless bread products keep your blood sugar levels regulated whereas typical white flour processed breads cause spikes in blood sugar, leading to fat gain The peanut butter will give you healthy fats that will sustain your appetite and sugar free jelly just adds the sweetness! 4:40 - 3.) Breakfast Smoothies: Many on-the-go morning drive through spots offer breakfast smoothies as their healthy alternative to eating greasy breakfast sliders or hash browns but as it turns out; these smoothies are just the opposite. The base, or liquid mix, for these smoothies is literally an artificial sugar syrup that gives the smoothie its irresistible fruit flavor - More often than not, these are not made with fresh, raw fruits, which means you are NOT actually getting any natural vitamins and minerals that you would have gotten if it were blended with real fruit. This also includes specialty coffee smoothies - DONT DO IT! Healthy alternative to promote weight loss: MAKE YOUR OWN! Invest in a blender (30$) and purchase all of your favorite fresh, raw fruit varieties of your choice for antioxidants, vitamins and mineral content and blend with water, unsweetened almond milk or unsweetened coconut milk. You could even blend cold coffee with a splash of unsweetened almond milk and a scoop of protein powder into your breakfast to really power your morning and metabolism. Youll save A LOT of money by getting your own blender while also saving yourself A LOT of calories. 6:12 - 2.) Pancakes and syrup. Liquid sources of natural sugars cause a more rapid rise in blood sugar and insulin levels, compared with eating solid foods - This can also be bad news for those already at risk for Diabetes. Pancake mixes are made of processed flour sources that have little to no nutritional value what so ever! Healthy alternative to promote weight loss: Instead, make your own pancakes. I use whey protein powder, a few eggs, cinnamon and oats - blend it up and cook them in a pan just like regular pancakes. Most grocery stores carry sugar free syrups which make it very easy to enjoy breakfast classics like pancakes... Well, protein pancakes. 8:08 - 1.) And the number one WORST breakfast choice of all time NOT EATING BREAKFAST AT ALL. A high-quality breakfast is absolutely necessary if you are serious about starting your day off right - providing you with lasting energy to fuel your day, curbing your cravings, lowering the risk for some chronic conditions as well as promoting weight-loss. So DONT SKIP breakfast! -- How normal guys can get ripped quick: http://sixpackshortcuts.com/rd2C8 I hope you guys found my WORST and BEST breakfast choices helpful on your quest to losing that belly fat for good. Metformin vs Metformin XR

I've been on Metformin 500mg x2 daily for the last month. Between my change in diet and the medication my numbers are looking real good. However I've never gotten past the GI issues. The stomach and upper GI issues went away after a few days. Unfortunately I deal with lower GI issues on an almost daily basis. The main problem is very painful cramping first thing in the morning. It will sometimes wake me up in the morning. I have tried a lot of things to improve my tolerance, but I fear this is as good as it's going to get. I would just suck it up, except it's really affecting my ability to work out in the morning. That's a problem.
I've read that people who had problems with Metformin had a lot of success with Metformin XR. I'm up for a refill and would like to try XR, but I have some questions/concerns.
    1. I don't want to screw up my numbers. Will XR not be as effective? Anyone have any experience with this?
    2. I can't tell if there is a cost difference. Anyone know?
    3. Anyone have the opposite reaction? XR being worse?
    Thanks.
    --Bill

Ask you doctor for the Metformin XR - it's the same, but coated so it's more long-lasting. People experience fewer side-effects on it. It should be very cheap in the generic form....

  3. Trudii

My previous doctor was adamant that the XR version was not as effective or "bio available" as the non-XR version. I'm not sure if he was right or not, I still use the non-XR version.

Diabetes-friendly Drink Recommendations

Food and eating can be a stressful thing when you have diabetes. If you're living with type 1, type 2 or gestational diabetes, meal times can be a cause of stress; but another source of worry is what to drink when you have diabetes. If you're controlling your diabetes and blood sugar by diet and exercise or with medications and insulin, you still need to be cautious of the food and drinks that enter your body. Living with type 1 diabetes myself, I know first hand how much one wrong drink choice can affect my blood sugar levels. A type 1 diabetic does not produce insulin themselves so they must inject insulin with each meal. Making sure what you consume including drinks in between meals is important. In fact, drinking just one sweetened drink a day can raise your risk of type 2 diabetes by 25 percent. People tend to think that fruit juice is a good choice, but with a high concentration of fructose, diabetics should only consume fruit in its whole form. When fruit is juiced it is stripped of all its fiber, and fiber is what helps to slow down the blood sugar spike. Consuming fruit juice will set you up for a roller coaster of blood sugar levels all day. Fruit juice should be reserved Continue reading >>

    Hi ladies

A little about me: TTC #2 since May, currently have a 3yo DD, had a chemical in July & was diagnosed in September with PCOS. This is my second month using Metformin and I'm having terrible side effects with my prescribed dosage, mainly diarrhea & vomiting (sorry if tmi). I've brought the concern to my doc but she sort of had a passive attitude towards my side effects. And some people have encouraged me to ask for Extended Release but can someone explain what exactly that means? TIA!

  2. JetsMom07

It's where the Metformin is released into your body slowly over the course of the day versus the immediate release of the dose. The ER still hurt my stomach, but not as bad as the regular. There is also one called Osmotic that is suppose to be an ER version and more stomach friendly. I haven't tried it tho. I found avoiding greasy foods and coffee helped with the side effects. I still can not take the dose that my doctor prescribed of 2 tabs twice a day of the Metformin ER 750mg. I typically get 1 or 2 tabs per day in depending on how well I tolerate it that day.

  3. verovar

So is the ER Met & totally different type of Met pill? Or is it just a different way of taking the dosage? My doc had prescribed me to take 2 500mg a day but I just take one before bed every night. Has your altered dosage affected your cycles? Sorry so many ?'s!
