Is It Safe To Use Metformin During Pregnancy?

Is It Safe To Use Metformin During Pregnancy?

Metformin is a commonly used drug for managing type 2 diabetes. It is considered an effective treatment option for many people with diabetes, but is it safe for pregnant women? Metformin is a drug that helps to lower blood sugar. It is considered one of the best first line treatments for type 2 diabetes. A review posted to Diabetology & Metabolic Syndrome notes that metformin helps to lower blood sugar levels, strengthens the endocrine system, improves insulin resistance, and reduces fat distribution in the body. Before taking any drugs, including metformin, a pregnant woman has to be absolutely sure that the drugs will not affect her or her baby. Effects of metformin use during and after pregnancy Some people are concerned about using metformin during and after pregnancy because it crosses the placenta. This means that when a pregnant woman takes metformin, so does her baby. However, the results of the few studies that have been carried out so far into the effects of taking metformin during pregnancy have been positive. A 2014 review posted to Human Reproduction Update found that the drug did not cause birth defects, complications, or diseases. The researchers did note, however, that larger studies should be carried out to make this evidence more conclusive. Metformin and gestational diabetes A separate review posted to Human Reproduction Update noted that women who took metformin to treat gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy) gained less weight than women who took insulin. A 2-year follow-up study found that babies born to the women treated with metformin had less fat around their organs, which could make them less prone to insulin resistance later in life. This could mean that children who are exposed to metformin at a young age could gain long-term benefi Continue reading >>

Hi there! I'll give you guys background.. I am 28 years old and ttc for 1 year. Three weeks ago, I was dx with PCOS (after years of awful periods) and the reason why I haven't conceived yet. I was obviously upset at the fact that no one noticed before.. Anyways, they put me on Metformin (started off on 1000 mgs and now on 1500 mgs) and have been using OPK's because I have no idea when I'll be getting my period. I noticed two lines on the OPK's three days in a row that were hard to tell whether there was a difference in colour or not. So, yet again, I'm not sure that I even ovulated. But, now I'm getting sore breasts and nipples, my lower back is sore like I lifted something heavy, I feel nauseated in spurts throughout the day, and I feel like I could sleep all the time. I never feel rested when I get up. Just before and during my period I get most of these things but never the nausea or the sore nipples. Anyone ever experience these symptoms before? I haven't had a period on my own without medication since October of 2004.. Does anyone think that I might be pregnant? Or, maybe it's my period? Or is it the Met? I'm so confused, that I don't know what to think. Anyone else gone through something similar? Lots of baby dust to all of you! Chicks, It sound to me that you might be pregnant. How long ago was the Positive OPT? I have pcos too and I am on metformit 1500 mg too and I found out in March 4th of this year that I had it and they put me on metformin and I have skipped my period, all of May and all of June and I don't know if I am pregnant of not so can any one help me? Hi Merlee! Thanks for the response.. The dark OPK was only last week, so maybe I ovulated late? Or maybe I didn't ovulate at all.. It was hard to tell the difference between the two lines.. The test lin Continue reading >>

I Just Started Taking Insulin On November And I ... | Diabetic Connect

If your bg levels was high when first diagnosed you will feel different in and out of your body for a couple of days to a week the most Ive experienced this countless of times. Your not used to feeling the pain you feel now because the high bg levels were high enough to cause you not to notice. As far as sensitivity I have no idea, although I do get sensitive sometimes but it's not a everyday thing either. So just keep trying and control your bg levels and you'll see that if not all at least half of your concerns will be solved HI I have been on insulin for two years now. Two different types. I have to say I have not experienced any of these issues. but I have suffered from weight gain my first year. I was able to loose it later Thank God but the first year I gained about 30 pounds! I have since lost it and hope and pray It will stay off!! but thats the extent of the insulin side effects for me. If your side effects become bothersome or get worse ask your doctor and perhaps he can try a different insulin for you. perhaps that might help. The funny thing is everyone is different and our bodies react so differently to things. I wish you the very best God bless and Happy New Year!! What I was told is that everyones' story is different. When I started with the insulin my jaws tightened up almost to where I have to stretch out my mouth. Weird I know. Exercise helps loosen up that tightness you will definitely feel better. Even a short walk! Nipple sensitivity not me thank goodness with all of this and my age at 48 my husband fears our next challenge may be menopause! Poor him lol! How often and what type of insulin do you take? You mention taking other meds and the problems with the sensitivity and aches could be due to one of them and not the insulin. But, you should ask y Continue reading >>

Do Women With Pcos Who Take Metformin Get Sore Nipples As A Side Effect From The Meds? What Other Side Effects | Yahoo Answers

Do women with pcos who take metformin get sore nipples as a side effect from the meds? what other side effects Update: could it be possible that i am pregnant? Are you sure you want to delete this answer? Best Answer: No, sore nipples are not a side effect of metformin at all. Gastrointestinal side effects may occur (nausea, diarrhea, etc.) Sore nipples are caused due to high level of progesterone harmone during the luteal phase of the cycle (ie just before period is due), or during pregnancy. Metformin has no role in that. I have pcos and used metformin for a while. I never had any problems with sore nipples, though. The most common side effects of this are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. I have this same condition I've been on metformin for 2 months and I started experiencing sore nipples a few days ago the slightest touch hurts like crazy. Ice read where other women have experienced this as well.... I know for a fact I'm not pregnant. I've been celibate for to long to be pregnant. Sore nipples are not a side effect of taking Metformin. LIke the others have mentioned naseua, dirahea, loss of apptetite are the main ones. The Diarahea is the worst. it takes a couple days for your system to get used to it. Nope metformin does not cause sore nipples... Ovulation and also pregnancy does though Yes, that can be a side effect. Diarrhea is he worst side effect ever. Sensitive Breast: 10 Causes, Other Symptoms, Treatment, And More

Sensitive Breast: 10 Causes, Other Symptoms, Treatment, And More

Although women are more likely to experience sore breasts, this can affect anyone who has breast tissue. In addition to sensitivity, you may also experience: Breast pain can be alarming, but it usually isnt cause for concern. Breast pain is rarely a symptom of cancer, and there are several reasons why perfectly healthy breasts may start to hurt. Heres what may be behind your symptoms and what you can do to find relief. One of the most common causes of breast pain is an ill-fitting bra . Bras provide support for the heavy, fatty tissue in a womans breasts. A bra that is too big, too old, or too stretched out may not provide the support you need. When your breasts jostle around all day, they can easily get sore. You may also feel sore in your back, neck, and shoulders. On the flipside, wearing a bra thats too small or too tight can put too much pressure on your breasts and lead to sensitivity. Think you wear the right size? You could be wrong. One 2008 study found that 80 percent of women wear the wrong bra size. Researchers found this to be particularly common among women with larger breasts. If you think your bra may be to blame, ask yourself the following questions: Are your breasts spilling out over the top of your bra? Are you wearing your everyday bra on the tightest or loosest buckle? Is there a gap between your breast and the cup? If you answered yes to any of the above, consider a professional fitting at a department store or lingerie shop. Many women find it difficult to measure themselves at home, and a professional fitting is often much more accurate. You can also try an online service, like Thirdlove , that lets you test a bra at home before you buy it. Your pectoral muscles (commonly called pecs) lie directly beneath and around your breasts. When you strain Continue reading >>

Wondering If Metformin Works This Fast

Wondering If Metformin Works This Fast

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Message Board HealthBoards > Women > Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) > Wondering if metformin works this fast I was prescribed metformin after 3 months on BC to get my period started. I really want to get pregnant. The first month of BC worked fine but the next month and the third month, I didn't have a period. Long story short, my doctor put me on metformin on the 15th of November. I am supposed to be on 850mg twice a day but I could not handle that much due to nausea and diarrhea, therefore I cut back to 850mg once a day. For the last two days, I have had slight cramping, really sore nipples and some vaginal discharge. Could metformin work that fast in getting things going? Re: Wondering if metformin works this fast Not sure if met could work that fast but there is always the chance I just got put back on met today but have had it before. I think it can take up to 3 months for your body to adjust to it where you stop having so much nausea and side effects. There is a new extended release version of met available now you could ask about if the regular is causing too many problems. Good luck to you! Location: Top of a hill, somewhere in Iowa Re: Wondering if metformin works this fast I think you need to talk to your doctor. You can get other dosages besides the 850. It probably isn't wise to drop your dosage in half without consulting a doctor. I take 3 500mg a day, two in the morning and one a night. I find with the morning pills its best to eat something with them or soon after. This helps with the nausea. The single pill at night doesnt bother me, could be cuz i take it right before bed, i'm not sure. Re: Wondering if metformin works this fast I talked with my doctor and he told me to take the prescription as prescribed to get the m Continue reading >>

Sore Nipples Or Breasts? Heres Help

Sore Nipples Or Breasts? Heres Help

Typical nipple pain (transient soreness) that does not usually indicate a problem: Latch-on pain that lasts no more than 30 seconds into the feeding. This is often described as mild pain or discomfort, but since the pain sensation is very subjective every mother experiences pain differentlysome mothers feel more severe pain. The pain should not continue through the entire feeding, and there should not be pain between feedings. Pain usually peaks around the third day after birth, and is gone within two weeks. There is no skin damage no cracks, blisters, or bleeding. Your nipple should look the same before and immediately after the feeding not flattened, creased or pinched. Get help froman experienced breastfeeding counselor and/or IBCLC if you experience the following: Pain that continues past the first couple of weeks Skin damagecracks, blisters, or bleeding If youre experiencing any of the above issues, then dont let someone tell you that everything looks fine it is either a sign that damage is being done or of some underlying condition (infection, etc.).If youre experiencing pain that makes you dread feeding your baby or that you describe as excruciating or if you have cracked or bleeding nipples, then this is NOT typical and there is almost always something that can be done to address the issue and to alleviate the pain. Please do not assume this is simply what breastfeeding is supposed to be like and just suffer through it ask for help! It doesnt mean youre doing something wrong there can be many causes, from anatomical issues to infection. Cracking, bleeding or any other nipple damage is not typical- something is causing the damage and pain, and a good IBCLC can help you to find the cause. Sore/painful Nipples

This expert forum is not accepting new questions. Please post your question in one of our medical support communities . I am a diabetic on several oral medications & lantus (& Novolog prn).I have been telling my PCP, for months, that my nipples are painful. He sent me for XRays which show something in that area.He sent me for another XRay which shows shadows in the area.He insists that it is a medication that I am taking, that is causing the pain.Is that possible?I have read that cancer of the testicles cause painful nipples.By the way, in 1998 I had surgery to remove a self contained rectal tumor and my rectum was removed but I was re-connected with out a colostomy bag,o radaition or chemo was needed. Insulin does not commonly cause breast pain, so the lantus is not the cause. There are a few endocrine conditions that can cause breast enlargement and nipple pain, so you may need to see a specialist. There are soem medications that can do this as well. In addition to going over your medications and side effects with a pharmacist, I suggest you continue to try to find out what this is, and be aggressive. Some findings on xray are obviously benign and others are not. I cannot comment on yours because I do not know the official reading. I've been increasing my doseage 500mg per week. I'm at 1500 on my way to 2000mg. I had all the normal side effects, nausea, diarrhea, etc... but as of a couple days ago, my nipples are really sore and i have a clear discharge. I'm not sure whether this is from the Met or if I'm ovulating. I haven't had AF since October of 2010 except for once this past April induced by Provera. Anyone else experience this or have any ideas about it? Sounds to me like the met is helping your hormones to regulate and your ovaries to function correctly...those are symptoms of high estrogen which usually comes before ovulation Emily (36) & DH Kevin (37), married 10/24/10 1/3 Follistim cycle - OHSS, Chemical pregnancy 2/11 Follistim cycle 2, lower dose - BFP 3/4! My Boobs Have Have Really Sore For Over 2 Weeks...

My Boobs Have Have Really Sore For Over 2 Weeks...

My boobs have have really sore for over 2 weeks... We are TTC, taking metformin and clomid and I have PCOS. This is my first try with clomid. I have very irregular periods so I don't even know when to test honestly. My last period was August 20-25, that's when I started the clomid and then assuming I acctuallyovulated, it would have been the first week of September. Now since about September 12th, my boobs and nipples have been really sore. Some days they are worse than others but still hurting. I feel like I have experienced a couple other things that are considered pregnancy symptoms. However, sometimes I feel like I'm making it up in my head almost because I know we want it so badly! If anyone has any light to shed, please please do! Mine have been like this the last 2 months from O until AF comes :( they haven't hurt like this since I was pregnant but I guess it turned into an annoying 2 week long AF symptom for me :( good luck! You and I are pretty much even on that I can't even shower without my nipples hurting and I'm late I just wrote a post about it also Unfortunately, progesterone can cause those symptoms. Have you had O confirmed by temping, ultrasound or blood tests? If you did O the first week of Sept, you could take an HPT. Your OB would be able to answer this best since they know your specifics better than we do. Your entire post sounds like its talking about me! First day of last period aug 23. Sept 3 doc said he believed i just ovulated bc of really bad cramping i had and pink spotting when i wiped that morning- which was day 12 correlates with ovulation. Never really got rid of EWCM just varying levels of it even now. And my boobs have been swollen heavy and nipples sensitive and i could cry so easily about anything lately and like you i was told i ha Continue reading >>

Early Pregnancy Symptoms W/ Pcos

Early Pregnancy Symptoms W/ Pcos

EARLY PREGNANCY SYMPTOMS W/PCOS My husband & I have been trying to conceive for about 1 year & have exercised more pointed efforts for about 7 months. This BFP was both a surprise & a blessing! Thank you Lord! We went to see an RE for the first time b/c 3 cycles of clomid failed. We wanted to switch to femara & escalate our efforts to make it happen this time. She told me I have a mild case of PCOS w/a very light resistance to insulin. So she put me on metformin & said I'd need to diet (low carb, low sugar), exercise (abt 3 x a week) & take the meds – all 3, not 1 or 2 – if I wanted to get pg. I also met w/a dietician that my RE recommended to help ensure I adopted a proper pcos compatible diet. I'm not one for exercising so that was a huge adjustment. The dietician helped me understand it by explaining that not only does exercise help w/weight loss, but it also aids the medication's effectiveness. I committed to the tri-fold plan & here is my story. Hopefully someone will be blessed by them as much as I have been blessed by reading others. 1 day before ovulation - took hcg novarel shot today, which i believe means i ovulate in 12-48 hours. Ovulation - had iui performed in the afternoon. :-) baby dust to me!!! 14 days & counting...i MUST stay relaxed & pampered! 1dpo - so far no symptoms since the iui. we'll c how things progress & if the follicles liked the little swimmers :-) 2-3dpo - breast activity, not quite pain, around top & sides of breasts. 4dpo - nothing really. have been feeling a bit bloated considering i didnt eat much yesterday so not sure why my stomach is so full. Just remembering that I've have had indigestion/heartburn for about 5 days. feels like food is caught in my upper chest & need to burp all the time. 5dpo - on the bus ride into work this am Continue reading >>

Ovulation And Pcos With Dr. Jerilyn Prior

Ovulation And Pcos With Dr. Jerilyn Prior

Ovulation and PCOS with Dr. Jerilyn Prior Insights about ovulation, fertility, PCOS and more. An Interview with Jerilynn C. Prior, M.D. FRCPC Dr. Jerilynn Prior is a professor of endocrinology at the University of British Columbia. Her major interests lie in womens health and both doing and interpreting well designed, holistic studies. She is a pioneer in research involving women's menstrual cycles, ovulation, progesterone and bone loss. JLML: It was from your groundbreaking research that I first learned that even young women often have menstrual cycles in which they menstruate but don't ovulate. As a result they don't make progesterone, and the stage is set in that cycle for estrogen dominance. What is the primary cause of anovulatory or non-ovulating cycles? JCPrior: Ovulation disturbance, rather than being peculiar to a few women, is common in all of us at least intermittently. It is the body's dynamic way of responding to the stresses that we encounter in our lives. I'll use myself as an example. I went on a very strenuous backpacking trip. There were personal clashes on the trip, and we didn't bring enough fuel to boil water so we didnt have enough food, and I lost weight. Due to this combination of strenuous exercise, personal conflict and weight loss, I had a short luteal phase, meaning I didn't make progesterone for 10 or more days. I knew that because I was taking my temperature (in my mouth, with a light digital thermometer) every morning before I got up. JLML: How do you track your luteal phase with a basal temperature chart? JCPrior: If you record your oral temperature every morning for an entire month using a digital thermometer, record the temperature in the evening before you go to bed, and record any illness or early or late rising, you can quantitative Continue reading >>
