Trouble Sleeping | Diabetes Forum The Global Diabetes Community

Diabetes Forum The Global Diabetes Community Find support, ask questions and share your experiences. Join the community Hello, I was recently diagnosed with type 2 a month ago. I was started on metformin 1 per day increasing to 2 after two weeks. All seemed fine initially. It's weird because I didn't have any symptoms of diabetes apart from tiredness after meals and getting up in the night to go to the loo, no excessive thirst and certainly no weight loss. It was only after my auntie, who is also diabetic, tested my blood glucose and found it was about 11 first thing in the morning. I've cut out all sweets, cakes, biscuits, sugary drinks, and have really reduced my carb intake, I'm walking the dog every evening which is getting better and better, we are able to walk much further every time and I've lost a lot of weight initially around my chest and stomach. So the problem I'm having is I don't have much appetite and am generally less hungry than I've ever been! also for the past 10 days I've been suffering from insomnia, where I can't fall asleep no matter how tired I am before going to bed and I'm only getting a few hours sleep per night. I did change my mattress when it started Continue reading >>

Can a bananna before bed spike my sugar count?

I had one small bananna before taking my Lantus and going to bed and had a reading of 178 this morning. I try to eat something before bed but is this bad for you. I would think the Lantus and 8 hours later the count would be lower. I know that banannas have some natural sugar but thought it should be out of my system by day break along with the 30 units of Lantus... any thoughts?

I do not eat banana's either because I am allergic to them but I do know they are a high carb fruit.
If you have to eat before going to bed (in my opinion) one would eat small carbs not usually fruit and equal amounts of protein.
I have to eat before bed because I get Dawn Phen. my sugars soar in the AM if I don't eat so I have 3 to 5 whole wheat crackers with 1 oz of Swiss cheese and my morning numbers are in the 80-90 range. I hope this helps. Deb

    Hello.
A small banana has 23 grams of carbohydrates, 1.1 grams of protein and 90 calories. A snack should not exceed 15 grams of carbohydrates according to many sources.
Many diabetics can not eat fruit without seeing their blood glucose readings rise, especially bananas. You should never have any type of carbohydrate without a lean protein. Try some whole wheat crackers with peanut butter or string cheese with a slice of lean ham as a bed time snack.

How To Take Synthroid Properly | Best Way To Take Levothyroxine Correctly | When To Take Thyroid Medication After Eating Hey guys! This weeks video is all about how to take your thyroid medication properly to get the most out of it. Levothyroxine is a medicine used to treat an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) which affects 1 in 70 women and 1 in 1,000 men in the UK. The thyroid gland makes thyroid hormone which helps to control energy levels and growth. Levothyroxine is taken to replace the missing thyroid hormone. KEY FACTS: Levothyroxine starts working straight away, but it may be several weeks before your symptoms start to improve. The most common side effects of levothyroxine are caused by taking a bigger dose than you need. Your doctor can lower your dose to help reduce any side effects. Before you start taking levothyroxine, your healthcare professional will do a blood test to see what dose you need. Once you start taking the medicine you'll have regular blood tests to see how well its working. HOW AND WHEN TO TAKE: Unless told otherwise by your prescriber or healthcare professional take levothyroxine once a day in the morning, ideally at least 30-60 minutes bef

When To Take My Metformin?

Hi was just wondering when is the best time to take the metformin? Before dinner or after? i have been told to take them after dinner but i think taking them an hour before i eat is better....when do you guys/gals take them (if your taking metformin)? D.D. Family preD 1971 - T2 2003 - insulin 2005 I take my morning dose(500mg) at breakfast and the evening dose(1000mg) right before bed metformin-2000mg, lisinopril-20mg, thyronorm-137mcg Originally I took mine at dinner and didn't get enough of bg reduction. I switched to first thing in the morning and last thing at night. I just added a 3rd dose in the early afternoon and now I can keep bg's stable in the low 100's all day. It seems I am much more insulin resistant in the morning and early afternoon. Taking met at those times help keep the numbers down. For some reason at dinner just the process of eating low carb is enough to keep my 2 hours numbers in the low 100's. D.D. Family T2 since 1996 and struggling to be healthy. I take 3 x 850mg of metformin. I have never had any ill effects from metformin and can take it on an empty stomach without any problems. I take it to minimize my dawn phenomena (high morning FBGs). Hi was just wo Continue reading >>

I was just prescribed Metformin 500 mg. for the first time, to be taken once a day. When is the best time of day to take it? My resting this morning was 114...should I still take it? My only suggestion about when to take it is after a meal, not because it will bring your blood sugar down from the meal, metformin doesn't work that way, but because it sometimes causes stomach upset in the beginning, and having a full stomach may help with that. 500mg is a minimal dose, so it might not happen, but if you do experience stomach issues, it's rarely for more than two or three weeks. If the discomfort persists, there is an extended release version that usually clears that right up. I've been taking metformin for many years, and am currently on 500mg a day, and I've never had an issue. Most people don't, and with luck, you'll be one of those people, too. :) Sorry you had to join our club, but glad you found us.

Hi, bkeller39, and welcome to the site!
Most people find that taking metformin with food usually helps with the gastric side effects...and so does taking the extended release version. (Just a heads up in case you end up feeling those side effects.)
I would think that before bed (with a snack?) might possibly be the best time to take metformin because the main way it works is by keeping the liver from releasing too much glucose.
Even though your fasting BG this morning was 114, I suggest you start taking it since it was prescribed for you....of course, it's your decision, but....it's entirely possible for people with diabetes to have their fasting BG at 114 or lower and still be helped by metformin. It might be that your BG is much higher at other times of the day. Do you ever test at other times?

When To Take Metformin | Diabetic Connect

wow, that is great! Don't think I've been below 144 in a long time. This morning it did drop down to 158 (from 174 yesterday), probably partly due to exercising for over an hour yesterday at gym, but need to get it lower. The type of Metformin I am on is called GLYB/Metformin 5/500. Is that the same thing as Glipizide? Or is it a separate med that you take in addition to Metformin? If it is not the same as what I am taking, I will definately ask him about it on my next visit, which is soon. My med is $29.30 at Target, for 120 tablets, so I wonder if they are different meds? Also, good idea about taking the mid-afternoon appetite suppressant, I still have a bottle of them from when I used to be on Medi a few years ago, will try it. I am really curious if your med and mine are the same or not, that may make a real difference for me, too. I am on Metformin 500 as well twice a day (morning and evening), so the Glipizide is an additional med that works well together with Metformin, and it's only in the mornings. Ask your doctor about it. Also, the meds are MUCH cheaper at WalMart instead of Target. 120 tablets at WalMart is only $12.00. Hi Trish, i to am on 1,000 mg of Metformin and al Continue reading >>
