For those who didn't read the article - what this shows is that a compound extracted from broccoli was given to people with type 2 diabetes for 12 weeks, with blood tests taken at the start and end of treatment. The higher their starting HbA1c, the greater the effect of the compound, and the higher their BMI the greater the effect. So, essentially, poorly controlled diabetes and obesity made the drug much more effective, and it appears there was basically no significant effect if you didn't have one of those two (although I can't find the numbers for that in the article). Obviously this will need to be tested more, FDA (in the US) approval, etc., but having a potentially completely safe pill that can be taken once a day along with existing medications would be really nice to have, and 10% reduction is nothing to shrug off. EDIT - for those questioning how beneficial 10% reduction is, here's a nice quote - "HbA1c measures blood glucose control in type 1 and type 2 diabetics. Type 2 diabetes is basically insulin resistance--(compared to a lack of insulin production)... so, my cells ignore the insulin, and more and more is needed to do the same amount of work. It results, eventually, in extra carbohydrates being turned into glucose. This can be measured, over the long term, by a blood test that can measure the 'average' of your blood glucose over the last 3 months. So, high insulin resistance = lots of blood sugar = lots of long-term blood sugar = high long-term blood sugar numbers. Those high numbers are what they use to DIAGNOSE diabetes. Because non-diabetics don't have high numbers. They have low numbers. Once those numbers go over a line, you're diabetic. (this is why you see people talking about "CURING" diabetes with diet. They eat stuff that doesn't raise blood sugar, so their long-term blood sugar numbers go down, and the test shows non-diabetic numbers. .... you are STILL insulin resistant. You just don't have high long-term blood sugar numbers.) What makes blood sugar go up? Most people say it's stuff like candy, and sugar, and ice cream and sweet stuff. and they're right! Father was prescribed metformin a long time ago, but stopped picking up the prescriptions at some point saying it wasn't helping his type 2 diabetes. He went in to get some results and A1Cs were really high. They talked and he agreed to go back on metformin along with taking some new drugs. However, my father was hypoglycemic on friday, which we caught and got his levels back to normal, but even with taking the metformin and insulin and checking his sugars several times a day, his sugars either spike high or low. On top of all of this he has a constant stomach ache and anything he eats, he passes right through. He's been miserable for the last week, and even taking imodium and gas relief medication isn't providing him any quality of life improvements. Any suggestions on to help? We see his GP tomorrow and going to ask for extended release to see if that helps him. Cause as of right now, he's eaten about 1 small meal once a day because of this, and he already has a hard time getting up by himself to make it to the bathroom (he's 67, a big guy, and has bad knees). EDIT: I should mention that when he spikes its closer to low 200's and when it drops its in the 60's. He complained so much that I've asked if I can take him to the hospital but he refuses to go.
