Brittany Murphy's Cause Of Death: Young And Female In Hollywood

Brittany Murphy's Cause of Death: Young and Female in Hollywood "Maybe she felt like she was not the, like, skinny, pretty girl...And then the next few movies she was thinner, blonde, you know, at MTV Awards and all sorts of things like that, and going out with Eminem and Ashton Kutcher... I think she felt the pressure to become a different sort of commodity to survive in show business, and I think it was awful." Clueless director Amy Heckerling to blogger Scott Feinberg The death of Brittany Murphy--kooky, adorable, and promising, then progressively emaciated and considered to be "troubled" in Hollywood--is a tragedy of social proportions. As the coroner's office prepares its report, the media speculates on the cause of death. The initial assessment that she died of "natural causes" only increased conjecture about how we might understand the passing of a 32-year old woman we may have felt we sort of knew. Murphy is said to have suffered from diabetes, an eating disorder , and habitual prescription drug abuse after a number of painful plastic surgeries. But ultimately the cause of death may be that she was young, female, and on the B-list in Hollywood. It's hard for those of us who are not part of it to understand the culture of ruthless assessment, devaluation, and denigration that young women are subjected to when they enter into the Hollywood star and wanna-be-star system. Carrie Fisher's reminiscences of what it was like to be young and hot after she hit it big as Princess Leia in Star Wars--the coke, the parties, the fame--are the same as Drew Barrymore's tales of early, stratospheric stardom, and then rehab at age 12--except that Murphy never made the white-hot A-list like Fisher and Barrymore, or her peers Angelina Jolie and Alicia Silverstone. Murphy acted with Continue reading >>

Diabetes The Cause Of Brittany Murphys Death?

Diabetes The Cause Of Brittany Murphys Death?

Diabetes the Cause of Brittany Murphys Death? Posted by Austin Cassidy December 20, 2009 Printer-friendly While the Los Angeles Police Department is conducting an investigation, the cause of death for Hollywood actress Brittany Murphy may not be known for some time. The L.A. County Coroner's Office will perform an autopsy on Murphy's body, over the objections of her husband. The results of the autopsy may offer some clues as to what triggered her untimely demise Sunday morning. Celebrity news website TMZ.com reported this afternoon that Brittany Murphy's mother, who found Murphy unconscious in the shower and called 911, told paramedics that her daughter had a history of diabetes. This could be an extremely important clue as recent studies have shown a clear link between diabetes and an increased risk of health disease and heart attack. In fact, according to a study released last year, adults being treated for diabetes are just as likely to have a heart attack or stroke or die from cardiovascular causes as people who have had a prior heart attack. The same study also revealed that diabetics are perhaps twice as likely as non-diabetics to die following a heart attack. "Little by little I think people are beginning to understand the dreadful consequences of diabetes, but we have to do more to make patients aware," Northwestern University professor of preventive medicine Martha L. Daviglus told WebMD when the data was released last year. "It has been considered just another risk factor for heart attack and stroke. We now know that it is much more than this." There's still no official word yet from Murphy's family if the actress was being treated for diabetes or any other health risk factors that may have contributed to her death. All of you fools out there who were sure it Continue reading >>

Brittany Murphy, Type 2 Diabetes, And Cardiac Arrest: Speculation And Science

Brittany Murphy, Type 2 Diabetes, And Cardiac Arrest: Speculation And Science

What made Brittany Murphy’s heart stop beating? We’re not likely to know why the actress went into cardiac arrest until toxicology reports come out sometime in the next six weeks. One clue, however, is that according to her mother, she had type 2 diabetes. If that’s the case, her tragic death may have some simple medical answers. Gossip Web sites have been quick to point out that Murphy was plagued by rumors of drug abuse and anorexia, both of which can put a strain on the cardiovascular system. But type 2 diabetes can be even harder on the heart. The high glucose levels associated with the disease affect the arteries, making the vessel walls rough and more likely to collect fatty deposits that block the flow of blood. If blood flow to the heart is interrupted, the cardiac muscle becomes starved for oxygen and dies. Even when they’re being treated effectively, people with type 2 diabetes are at a much higher risk for a heart attack or stroke than most of us. Having the disease is as big a risk factor as having already had one heart attack. When diabetes patients do have heart attacks, they’re about twice as likely to die of them. Sixty-five percent of diabetes patients ultimately die of cardiovascular disease or related complications. At 32, Murphy was young to go into cardiac arrest, but even children with diabetes can have heart trouble. It's impossible for us to know, without examining her, what lead to the cause of death. But someone in Murphy's situation may have had other risk factors for a heart attack─regardless of any rumors about anorexia and drug use. At the time of her death, she was reportedly “taking prescription meds for flu-like symptoms she had been experiencing for several days.” Catching the flu can make a person more susceptible to he Continue reading >>

Diabetes And Brittany Murphy | Symptoms Of Metabolic Syndrome Testcountry

Her petite frame may not have made it obvious, but news reports now say that actress Brittany Murphy, who suffered a full cardiac arrest and passed away last Sunday morning, had diabetes. This was apparently revealed by her mother to paramedics. While it may be true that death is perhaps the last thing that one would expect from someone as young and as full of potential as Murphy was, it is rather unfair to immediately think of such accusations as eating disorders or substance abuse, especially when the one being accused has just passed away. Although the actual cause of Brittany Murphy's death will not be known until toxicology reports are completed (this could allegedly take about six weeks). we are one with those who believe that no one is in a position to draw conclusions based on speculations. We, however, found a feature that talked about what gossip mongers will not find too interesting to talk about the fact that diabetes can take a toll on one's heart and can be fatal to someone as young as, or even younger than, Brittany Murphy. On a more personal note, this writer had a friend as a teenager who suffered from diabetes and succumbed to a full cardiac arrest one tragic morning at the age of 16. Having diabetes is generally considered as a risk factor for heart attack and stroke; statistics suggest that a diabetic is at least twice as likely to suffer from either condition as someone who does not suffer from diabetes. This is due to the fact that having high glucose levels a characteristic of diabetes leads to an increase in fatty deposits on the inside walls of blood vessels. These deposits, over time, can cause clogging of the arteries. A heart attack for someone who is diabetic is considered as a serious matter, and they are reportedly more likely to succumb Continue reading >>

Complications With Diabetes Contributed To Brittany Murphy's Death

Complications With Diabetes Contributed To Brittany Murphy's Death

Complications with Diabetes Contributed to Brittany Murphy's Death Former actress and drug abuser, Brittany Murphy, was found unresponsive in the shower by her mother who told paramedics that her ailing daughter suffered with Type 2 Diabetes. Type 2 diabetes, or diabetes mellitus type 2, is the most common form of diabetes and occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce enough insulin, or when cells in the body ignore the insulin it produces. Essentially, the body uses insulin to break down the sugar from food and transport it across through the blood system to cells. This conversion of sugar and starches makes glucose which is required for energy. When the bodys cells do not obtain enough glucose due to a lack insulin production, or when the cells ignore the insulin, it can cause serious consequences. The bodys cells first begin to starve which leads to high levels of glucose in the blood. This can lead to organ damage with kidneys, liver and heart affected most commonly. It can also impair sight and can seriously damage nerves. Anyone suffering with diabetes, just as Brittany Murphy did, stand a much higher risk of suffering from heart attacks or dying as a result of cardiovascular disease. Whether diabetes played a role in the death of the actress remains unknown for now but questions have been raised about the pressure on actresses to be thin at all costs after Brittanys anorexic struggles. It has been suggested that her eating disorder played a major part in her death. Other factors mentioned as contributors were her minor heart condition. Despite starring in films such as 8 Mile, Clueless and Girl Interrupted, Brittany Murphys substance abuse and eating disorders have been well documented. Clearly she was beset by mental health issues which ultimately led to he Continue reading >>

Murphy Sick And Vomiting Just Before She Died

Murphy Sick and Vomiting Just Before She Died Murphy Sick and Vomiting Just Before She Died Brittany Murphy was very ill in the hours before she went into cardiac arrest and died, sources tell TMZ. We're told Murphy was taking prescription meds for flu-like symptoms she had been experiencing for several days. We're told Murphy began vomiting early Sunday morning and told family members she was feeling very ill. Sources say various prescriptions were found in the home -- written for Brittany Murphy, husband Simon Monjack, and Brittany's mom. One source says, "There were a lot ... a lot of prescriptions in the house." Law enforcement sources tell us Murphy collapsed in the bathroom and somehow ended up in the shower ... there was, we're told, a significant amount of vomit in the immediate area. We're also told authorities did not find illegal drugs in the house, but Murphy was definitely taking various prescription meds. Sources say her condition and the meds could have triggered a heart attack, but it's too early to know. An autopsy will be performed Monday or Tuesday. We reported earlier Monjack did not want an autopsy but ultimately it's the Coroner's call. As we first reported, Brittany Murphy's mother told paramedics her daughter suffered from diabetes . Immediately, the buzz was on and discussions of possible prescription drug abuse landed on every news, blog and networking website. Following the days of Murphys death, drugs were not the only concern among bloggers and media. Eating disorders, such as Anorexia, as well as the chronic disease of Diabetes, came into question regarding the stars death. Because of Murphys petite, rail-thin frame, for years shes been hit with rumors that she had an eating disorder, which she always denied. However, only 2 weeks before her passing during her final interview with Fox News, she almost prophetically concurred to the rumors, saying, I am a bit thinner now than what I would like to be. Murphys mother and husband continue to deny that the Clueless star had an eating disorder, but confirmed Brittany did have diabetes (reports now say she had type-2). Today, the L.A. County Coroners report states that the causes of Brittany Murphys death was that of community acquired pneumonia and multiple drug intoxication. The report goes on to list that she also had an iron deficiency, as well as anemia. No mention of Anorexia or Diabetes, however, all her conditions are attributes to these two diseases. It makes one wonder in fact anemia is a common result from anorexia, with the iron deficiency causing the anemia (depending on which type); and, statistics from the CDC (Center for Disease Continue reading >>

People: Brittany Murphys Death Called Preventable

Caldara: Whos steering our primaries now? Sources involved in Brittany Murphys autopsy say the actress death was preventable, TMZ reports. The primary causes of Murphys death were pneumonia and severe anemia, according to the L.A. County Coroners report. Officials believe Brittanys condition was treatable but no one took her to the hospital in time, sources told TMZ. As for the multiple drugs found in her system, both were prescription, including medicine for cramps, and over-the-counter medications, including cough syrup. Sources say the drugs pushed her over the line but the underlying problems were the pneumonia and anemia, TMZ says. In other words, Brittany was really sick, didnt get treatment and by self-medicating it pushed her over the line, TMZ said. Likewise in the case of Johnson & Johnson heiress Casey Johnson, who died of natural causes linked to diabetes, she was not following doctors orders to deal with her condition, sources said. Sources said the coroners findings show that Johnson, who died at 30, was not taking her insulin shots, was not exercising, did not follow her strict diet and was not taking other medicines she needed. Autopsy results on the two women were released Thursday by the Los Angeles County Coroner, answering questions that swirled about both womens sudden and tragic deaths. Johnson, who had a history of drug and alcohol use, died as a result of her diabetic condition, the autopsy showed. The cause of death was listed as diabetic ketoacidosis a lethal condition condition caused by lack of insulin and sky-high blood sugar. Johnson was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes as a child. The daughter of Jets owner Woody Johnson was found dead in a West Hollywood home by a maid on Jan. 5. Shortly before her death, Johnson announced her engagement Continue reading >>

Deaths of Brittany Murphy and Casey Johnson were preventable, autopsies find The deaths of starlets Casey Johnson and Brittany Murphy could have been prevented if the women sought medical attention and followed doctors orders, sources connected with their autopsies told TMZ.com Thursday. Johnson died of complications related to diabetes and Murphy succumbed to a combination of pneumonia, prescription drugs and anemia, according to their autopsies released Thursday. Johnson, 30, died last month of ketoacidosis, a condition caused by a lack of insulin and sky-high blood sugar, the Los Angeles County coroner said. The Johnson & Johnson heiress and daughter of New York Jets owner Robert Johnson probably slipped into a diabetic coma, which is treatable within the first 24 hours, according to said Dr. Michael Baden, former chief medical examiner in New York City. If you have somebody with diabetes, there should be somebody checking up on that person, Baden said. Johnson was not taking her insulin shots, exercising, following her strict diet or taking vital medicines, sources told TMZ. As for Murphy, the 32-year-old Clueless and 8-Mile actress died accidentally of pneumonia and multiple drug intoxication, the coroners office said. Murphy had been suffering from flu-like symptoms before she died in December, but was self-medicating with prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications, including cough syrup, sources told TMZ. Baden suspected that drugs played a key role in her death. Continue reading >>

Brittany Murphy Rip: Did Brittany Murphy Die Of Diabetic Ketoacidosis?

Brittany Murphy Rip: Did Brittany Murphy Die Of Diabetic Ketoacidosis?

Did Brittany Murphy Die of Diabetic Ketoacidosis? Authorities are no closer today to knowing what caused the death of 32 year old actress Brittany Murphy this past Sunday. The coroner's autopsy revealed the actress died of natural causes, effectively ruling out homicide, but the cause of death is still undetermined pending further testing. So, pending the completion of additional testing, including toxicology, histopathology (study of her organs) and neuropathology (study of her brain) in the next 4 to 6 weeks, the only thing we do know is that a young, seemingly healthy 32 year old died of a cardiac arrest. Speculation of drug abuse and eating disorders are the most common presumptions, but is it possible that Brittany Murphy died from complications of her type 2 diabetes? Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening complication of Diabetes. It occurs when there is too little insulin in the body, blood sugar levels rise, the body begins to break down it's own fat for energy, resulting in a toxic level of acids called ketones. While it's more common among type I diabetics, type II diabetics also go into DKA. Symptoms of DKA are astonishingly similar to the flu-like illness Brittany Murphy is reported to have been dealing with in the week leading up to her death. According to the Mayo Clinic , DKA symptoms include: Symptoms are often confused as the flu, and without proper treatment the diabetic may not realize they are in DKA. Often times the nausea and vomiting result in the diabetic abruptly stopping their medication, causing a critical situation that can ultimately lead to loss of consciousness and death. How is it possible Brittany Murphy went into DKA? Here's what we know. She was a type 2 diabetic. Recently she had been reported as appearing to have lost so Continue reading >>

Rip: Brittany Murphy And Casey Johnson

I read both women had T1 and died very young due to ... well, diabetes gets mentioned. What do you all think? My take is that hard drugs and diabetes don't mix. I certainly hope my son never follows a Hollywood path. It seems especially deadly for T1s. I think no one knows exactly why she died. All of us who are diabetic know how important it is to take care of our blood sugars and watch any interaction of drugs and medications. Diabetic or not illegal drugs are dangerous. I haven't heard anymore about the diabetes and how that played into her death. But then again, I don't pay too much attention to celebrities. O.C. Blogger T2 since 2005, diet & exercise controlled I believe that if diabetes played a role, if out-of-control diabetes played a role in either of these deaths, it is because their mental/emotional health might not have been ideal. It is often forgotten that psychological health is just as important as physical health - it makes all the difference in WANTING to stay in control. These women had all resources at their disposal and yet, the mix of diabetes (possibly in Murphy's case), substance abuse (widely known in Johnson's case), and the pressure of being who they were could have been too much to handle. what we have here is a failure to communicate We the willing, following the unknowing are doing the impossible. We have done so much for so long with so little that we are now able to do anything with nothing. D.D. Family Glucose Disregulation since 2005 I don't really have a comment on Casey Johnson, but I am just a bit pissed at the handling of Brittany Murphy. I find it really sad the amount of total misinformation and confusion that surrounds her case. It brings a cloud of what I consider undeserved criticism to this young lady, slandering her name and Continue reading >>

Brittany Murphy - Type 2 - Tudiabetes Forum

I rarely engage in speculation about people in the media, and dont even know who Brittany Murphy was, though it is certainly sad when anyone that young dies, but the news is saying she had flu like symptoms for a few days prior to her death, and there is some mention (though no confirmation) of her being diabetic. If she was in fact an undiagnosed or misdiagnosed LADA and had gone into DKA that would certainly call attention to this diagnostic problem that so many of us have suffered with. I agree that a history of diabetes is an odd phrase; almost sounds like a euphemism for someone in denial about their condition. Again, not crediting the media for much, but I heard some rumblings about possible eating disorder. I wonder if diabulimia was a part of the picture? Like the saying goes, more will be revealed. I was an undiagnosed who went into DKA and had a heart attack. The weeks before that I had lost 30lbs. I was 35. I thought I had the flu (vomiting, exhaustion) when I was DKA. I was fortunate like Chuck to get to the hospital in time. Tragic if Brittanys death could have been prevented. the way they describe her symptoms like vomiting and trouble breathing makes it seem like she was ketotic with un-diagnosed type one diabetes. I wouldnt be surprised if this was the cause; poor girl she was very talented Funny, when I read some of the stories. I had the same thoughts, guess its a case of been there done that. I wish people and People Magazine would not jump to conclusions so quickly about her abusing drugs or starving herself to be thinner. Agree. They love the sensationalistic that can be used as a lesson to others. They glorify being skinny & then moralize at the same time. It is highly unlikely that Brittany Murphy had Type 2 diabetes! More likely that she was mis Continue reading >>

Troubled socialite Casey Johnson died of natural causes linked to diabetes, while Hollywood starlet Brittany Murphy's death was tied to her use of prescription drugs. Autopsy results on the two women were released Thursday by the Los Angeles County Coroner, answering questions that swirled about both women's sudden and tragic deaths. Johnson, 30, the Johnson & Johnson heiress who battled drug and alcohol woes, died as a result of her diabetic condition, the autopsy showed. Johnson was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes as a child. The daughter of Jets owner Woody Johnson was found dead in a West Hollywood home by a maid on Jan. 5. Shortly before her death, Johnson announced her engagement to bisexual reality TV star Tila Tequila. Murphy, 32, the star of "8 Mile" and "Clueless," was suffering from pneumonia when she collapsed and died in the shower of her California home on Dec. 21, 2009, the autopsy showed. While the illness was cited as her primary cause of death, the autopsy found "multiple drug intoxication" - all prescription medications, said coroner's spokesman Craig Harvey. Her death was ruled accidental, he said, and a full autopsy report was expected in two weeks. Continue reading >>
