    I've lost over 20lbs this year using Slimfast powder mixed with nonfat dry milk & added soy protein. The Slimfast & the nonfat dry milk are both high carb due to sugars. I have been subbing no sugar added Almond Milk for the nonfat dry milk & it doesn't spike me so much. What I'm looking for is opinions on taste, mixability, & carb content on other protein powders. I spike my BG with fruit right now, so I'd like a chocolate flavored powder, yet it has to be low carb (I have sugar free flavors of Torani syrups if I need to boost flavor/sweetness). I picked up some "Muscle Milk" today @ Target, strictly based on price & the fact that it is supposed to mixed with water for 8g carbs a serving (or 16g if you double it- doubt I will, as using for meal replacement, not for muscle gain). Anyone have suggestions? I'd really rather drink my breakfast than eat & this should make it easier to adjust to this low carb lifestyle.

    I have used protein shakes for years, but they are not a meal replacement in my diet, they are a supplement. I usually pick up a bag at costco, 6lb of whey protein powder, it is low carb. Most of the protein mixes taste like cr*p when mixed with water. I mix it with milk. I know, 1c milk, 12 g carbs. I have one shake first thing in the morning, the jolt helps arrest my dawn phenomenon. I'll then usually have a shake after workout, again, the measured amounts of carbs after workout are fine. You won't find protein powder much cheaper than the 6lb bag at costco.

    I too consume a lot of whey protein powder. I buy the ON (Optimum Nutrition) Vanilla Ice Cream flavored Whey Protein Powder. It is an excellent product with added glutamine, an important amino acid that is destroyed by heat. I get it at Vitamin Shoppe in the US for about $75 for 10 lbs which lasts me for about three months. It has less than 2 grams of carb per serving and about 25 grams of protein.
    I do not drink milk because of all the carb that Brian mentioned. I add an ounce of heavy cream to my whey protein shake with some ice. I like that taste better, too, and the cream only adds one gram of carb.
    Sometimes I make a whey protein shake with canned coconut milk for a more exotic taste. It is also much lower carb than milk.

One Regular Guy Writing about Food, Exercise and Living Past 100 Mr. Lazy Cook is at it again. What to do with left over white meat from a delicious Costco rotisserie chicken? Also, it is the middle of a heat wave over much of the country, and certainly here in Chicago. That isnt conducive to spending a lot of time preparing meals. It happens that I have on hand a large amount of previously cooked barley. I have mentioned in previous lazy cookery posts that I like to work ahead by precooking several days to a weeks worth of one dish that I can then mix and match to create simple and fast meals. When I precook the barley, I dont use plain water any more. I use chicken broth that comes in cartons. This also happens to be a Costco ingredient. Six quart cartons cost less than $10. I have a sample shake of Premier Protein Chocolate to try that my hairdresser buys by the case at Costco. She gave me one to try. I didn't realize that you are supposed to refrigerate them. I never would have thought that a Dollar store would have protein shakes. I'll definitely check it out Joy. For now I am only purchasing the Diabetic Boost as that is all that we can have on our pre-op fast that I know of. There will be a seminar about the pre-op diet as I get closer to it. I would really like to have some basics in the house as I know I'll be too weak to shop initially and I live alone. So the more preparation I do the better. When I go for my 6 month pre-op check in on Aug. 12 I'll ask about some brands of protein powder that they recommend and do some exploring from there. I just think it will be very hard to adjust to all the new products post surgery, especially feeling weak and lousy for the first while.
