How Do You Keep Diabetes Logs?

One of the most important self-management skills is keeping logs of health-related information. Do you do that? What do you keep records of? Are you consistent with logging, and does it help? I’m working a lot these days with people newly diagnosed with Type 2. I believe logging will help them understand how their bodies work and what affects their diabetes, but maybe I’m wrong. How can I help them start with logging, and should I? What should they log, and how can they do that? I’m asking for help because logging is a skill I’m terrible at. I trust my memory on things like what I ate, how far I could walk, how many times I fell, etc. It never works. Two months later, who can accurately remember what supplements they were taking or how many days they did their stretching exercises? You’re just guessing most of the time, so you might miss important patterns that a good log would show. Most people with diabetes, if they monitor at home, at least record their blood glucose results. But do you also record what you ate, your activity, what medications and supplements you took? Do you keep track of how you feel, your energy levels and symptom levels? When you think about it, you could log so many different parts of your life. It all might be helpful, but it’s also a lot of energy and time spent. I can’t imagine many people doing it all. Do you think it’s worth doing, or even possible? If you keep logs, how do you do it? Apple periodically updates its app store with lists of apps for particular groups of people. Even as the new iOS 8, with a built in Health app, goes into beta, Apple has added a new list: "Apple's Apps for Diabetics." According to the CDC's 2011 fact sheet, diabetes affects 25.8 million people, or 8.3 percent of the US population. The apps on Apple's list aren't all from the US, and they don't all target diabetes specifically. While many are tracking and management apps for blood glucose and insulin levels, others are more general purpose apps for eating specific diets, which people with diabetes could benefit from. The list includes mostly consumer-facing apps but one app for doctors, as well as one for kids and one for pregnant women with diabetes. The list has some overlap with the list of top-grossing diabetes apps Research2Guidance released in March, but app developer Azumio, which Research2Guidance identified as the market leader, has no apps on Apple's list. The importance of recording your blood glucose Log books and data collection are a crucial part of keeping your diabetes under control. When you write down the number it is easier to see your blood sugar patterns and know when you are on target or, conversely, why you are not on target. For most people, trying to remember multiple blood sugar numbers and what was happening at the same time as the blood sugar check is difficult and often inaccurate. Depending upon your type of treatment you may need to check you blood sugar once every few days or multiple times a day. If you are treated with diet alone, and your blood sugar is under control, you only may need to check every few days. In contrast, if your blood sugar is not well controlled and you are starting medications or taking insulin or pills that increase you insulin levels you should check multiple times a day. When taking insulin, you also need to record your insulin dose, and usually your food and carbohydrate intake and activity level. Ask you doctor for blood sugar monitoring and log book recommendations that are specific for you. There are three ways people commonly fill out the log books. Each method is listed below. If your journal entries include more fast food or packaged meals than veggies, lean meat, and whole grains, it's time to make a change. I have a selective memory when it comes to food. Ask me what I ate this week, and I'll tell you about a really great lunch I made or the world's best slice of pizza I ate. What I probably won't remember is the can of cashews I plowed through while watching a movie. Or the snack I had between lunch and dinner. That's where food journaling comes in. A 2008 study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that the more food records people kept, the more weight they lost. "Many people are not aware of what they're eating until they actually start writing it down," says Laura Cipullo, RD, CDE, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator in New York City. Admit it: You don't count the number of chips you're eating when you're elbow-deep into a bagor measure a cupful of pasta when you're dishing out dinner. "The thing people are always shocked at is how much they ate at a restaurant," says Kristin Kirkpatrick, MS, RD, LD, a registered dietitian and wellness manager of the Cleveland Clinic's Lifestyle 180 program.
