I worked at American Diabetes Association full-time(More than a year) Overall mission to ease the burden of diabetes,, benefits were fair; paid time off; awareness and prevention message, community outreach, healthcare partner relationships, research The cons of this organization far outweigh any listed pros. National, Divisional and Territory development leadership have literally driven a 75 year old organization into the ground. In their great wisdom, these leaders refuse to listen to reason and reality from the measly staff at the local level and the potential consequences and impact of their decisions and choices; and all under the guidance and approval of the ADA's national board. This leadership wouldn't know a sound strategy if it snuck up and bit them on their high horse backsides. The waste of this organization due to overall ineptness and lack of sound development strategies is epic. Wasted financial resources, wasted time, wasted talent resulting in complete failure. Their strategy failures include reallocating local staff resources to bring in high salaried staff to division and national rosters; then expecting local fundraising staff to raise exponentially more with exponentially less. When that wonderful strategy didn't work out, local staff were conveniently blamed and suffered under this leadership team. While former CEO has been axed, he should not be the only one blamed for the current state of the ADA. National, divisional and territory leadership have all been at the helm for the last year and a half, and their operational strategy directives have devastated and decimated this organization as it continues to slide further into an abyss. Their rash solutions to revenue challenges resulted in reducing needed local revenue generating staff resources an Continue reading >>

American Diabetes Association Announces Leadership Transition

American Diabetes Association Announces Leadership Transition

American Diabetes Association Announces Leadership Transition CEO Kevin L. Hagan Announces Plans to Leave the Association; Former Board Member Martha Clark to Serve as Interim CEO The American Diabetes Association announces today the resignation of Chief Executive Officer Kevin L. Hagan and the appointment of former member of the National Board of Directors Martha Clark as Interim CEO. Clarks last day on the Board was March 16. She will serve as Interim CEO until a national search for the next CEO is completed and the new CEO is in place. Hagan will remain with the Association through March 31 to support the leadership transition. I have been honored to help lead the Association and its incredibly important work through some significant challenges, said Hagan. I believe now is a great time to bring in a fresh perspective to lead the Association into the next era. Under Kevins leadership, we have put in place a new strategic plan and operating model that will help us better fulfill our mission and meet the needs of the people we serve, said Dave DeMarco, Association Board Chair. We are grateful for his leadership through those changes. The implementation of the strategic plan Kevin helped create will have an important and positive impact on the future of the Association and our work. Martha Clark is uniquely positioned to serve as interim CEO because she has worked alongside Kevin and the executive team during the last several months as we have planned for the future. For most of my life I have lived with type 1 diabetes, so the work of this Association is personal for me and my family, said Clark. That is why I am so passionate about the people who work for the Association and those we serve. I am firmly committed to the strategic plan and the operating model we have b Continue reading >>

Squibb was known as a vigorous advocate of quality control and high purity standards within the fledgling pharmaceutical industry of his time, at one point self-publishing an alternative to the U.S. Pharmacopeia (Squibb's Ephemeris of Materia Medica) after failing to convince the American Medical Association to incorporate higher purity standards. Mentions of the Materia Medica, Squibb products, and Edward Squibb's opinion on the utility and best method of preparation for various medicants are found in many medical papers of the late 1800s. In 1898, they decided to rename it Bristol, Myers and Company. Following Myers' death in 1899, Bristol changed the name to the Bristol-Myers Corporation. American Diabetes Association Cuts 10% Of Staff

American Diabetes Association Cuts 10% Of Staff

American Diabetes Association cuts 10% of staff A local nonprofit trying to address cuts in diabetes research funding and fundraising woes in a tough economic climate cut its staff late last year. The American Diabetes Association cut 86 positions, or about 10 percent of the associations work force, in December. The Alexandria-based nonprofit said the eliminations included both layoffs and getting rid of vacant positions that will not be filled. About half of the positions were in the D.C. area, most of which were associated with administrative functions. The health organization, founded in 1940, provides diabetes research, information and advocacy. Last year the association heard bad news when the Bush administration decided to further cut diabetes research funding for the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the fiscal year 2009 budget. The association also said it closed two offices in Portland, Maine, and Burlington, Vt. Employees who were laid off were treated as fairly as possible, including providing each of them the opportunity to work with an outplacement firm to make the transition as easy as possible, said Diane Tuncer, managing director of external communications. In the markets where offices were closed, the ADA will still provide limited programs for people with diabetes, but it will not conduct any staff-directed fundraising activities. Although these reductions were difficult, they will allow us to remain a strong, fiscally responsible organization and continue to deliver on our mission to prevent and cure diabetes, and to help all people affected by this disease, added Tuncer. Kevin Hagan came to the ADA a couple years ago, fired all of the previous executive staff, brought in his own hand-selected exec staff with a vision of turning the Association around. Not only did he not fulfill his promises, he has made it an absolute living hell of a work environment. Everyone is left worried if they will have a job tomorrow or not. Unless you're an executive, VP, or in senior management, don't expect to get much pay. They're keeping all the money up top and laying off anyone below them. Senior Management is also terrible. You get promoted based on if you're liked and in their "clique" or not. If you're a great player in the game of office politics, this is the place for you. Overall, stay away. This company will be lucky to be around in 2-3 years with the direction Kevin Hagan has taken them. I don't know how the board ever elected him as the new CEO after his failed stint at Feed the Children. Layoffs are a normal occurrence once the calendar hits a new year. There have been rounds of layoffs every year since Kevin Hagan has taken over, including this year. Do everyone else at the ADA a favor and resign. You are truly the worst "leaders" I have ever been around. You don't take time to know the lower-level individuals that are really the backbone of your organization. Flexible schedule to some degree; passionate volunteers and staff. CEO Kevin Hagan and Chief Stewardship Officer Corey Gordon have run this organization into the ground. They took no accountability for their first year fumbles and eliminated the passionate field staff carrying the heavy loads. The national board is either clueless or has drank the koolaid Hagan is serving. They should have recognized his inexperience running a national field network after his first round of layoffs 5 m Continue reading >>

The mission and the dedicated staff and grassroots volunteers. This organization has been in a downward spiral for nearly five years. In 2015 a new CEO was brought on board promising a new day at ADA. Within a few months it became clear that he and his new team were utterly incompetent and unwilling to listen to input from staff. In October 2015 there was a restructure that involved laying off many staff and no strategic plan. It was crystal clear the organization was going to fail and it did. Knowing this, many of us left in late 2015/early 2016 but unfortunately some stayed. FY2016 brought revenue shortfalls of approximately $37MM and on 1.30.2017 nearly 130 dedicated staff lost their jobs and 25 offices were closed. This is a travesty and was completely avoidable. There is bound to be continued uncertainty and turmoil over the next year as ADA tries to recover from this. I would not recommend anyone apply to work here until the dust settles. I'm going to address the board here since management is non-existent. You failed. A number of you saw the devasting path this new CEO was taking the organization down and wanted to address it, but too many of you refused to see the incompetence right in front of you, Those of you who refused to see or act on what was so obvious should resign from the board and allow people who understand what it takes to lead an organization that is mission driven but revenue dependent to make these decisions. You own the tragic fate of this organization. Now the American Heart Association and JDRF will step in to fill the void left by your negligence. Thankfully they will ensure that people with diabetes or at risk for diabetes have a champion. Shame on you. Kevin Hagan came to the ADA a couple years ago, fired all of the previous executive sta Continue reading >>

Amazon will acquire online pharmacy PillPack, which dispenses patient prescriptions as individual time-sorted doses. The company is also known for its sophisticated technology, which includes patient apps and order processing systems. Shares of CVS and Walgreens dropped sharply on the news that Amazon has made its long-rumored healthcare entry. I wrote about PillPack in mid-2015, amused by the physical description of its pharmacist founder as, the guy you might buy pot from at a Dead concert. He also offered his reaction to its just-raised $50 million, We should probably hire a finance guy. Amazons acquisition price wasnt disclosed (rumor: $1 billion in cash), but PillPack had raised $122 million through its Series D round in September 2016. The company said last year that it expected to bring in $100 million in revenue for 2017. Walmart was rumored to have been close to buying the company in April 2018 for under $1 billion, but didnt pull the trigger fast enough. The founders, who are both around 30 years old, met through MITs Hacking Medicine. As someone noted on Twitter, you can now buy everything Walgreens sells through its drugstore from Amazon. Amazon could also connect with insurers who want an alternative to giving business to pharmacy benefits manager Express Scripts, which Cigna acquired for $67 billion a few weeks back. That would take some work since to my knowledge, PillPack offers just the prescription-filling service and doesnt negotiate manufacturer prices or manage the use of specialty medications. Still, Amazon has the clout to turn the company into a PBM given that it now has the necessary pharmacy licenses (49 of 50 states, excluding Hawaii), multiple fulfillment locations, and the technology needed to scale. Maybe its unreasonable to expect an Indi Continue reading >>
