American Diabetes Month
Diabetes is one of the leading causes of disability and death in the United States. It can cause blindness, nerve damage, kidney disease, and other health problems if it’s not controlled. One in 10 Americans have diabetes — that’s more than 30 million people. And another 84 million adults in the United States are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The good news? People who are at high risk for type 2 diabetes can lower their risk by more than half if they make healthy changes. These changes include: eating healthy, getting more physical activity, and losing weight. How can American Diabetes Month make a difference? We can use this month to raise awareness about diabetes risk factors and encourage people to make healthy changes. Here are just a few ideas: Encourage people to make small changes, like taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Talk to people in your community about getting regular checkups. They can get their blood pressure and cholesterol checked, and ask the doctor about their diabetes risk. Ask doctors and nurses to be leaders in their communities by speaking about the importance of healthy eating and physical activity. How can I help spread the word? We’ve made it easier for you to make a difference. This toolkit is full of ideas to help you take action today. For example: Continue reading >>

People To Know 2015: Hunter Sego
When I came to work for the American Diabetes Association in mid-2013, Hunter Sego was already a legend. Find a student who can personify the need for diabetes care in the school setting, I heard as I began advocating in support of Safe at School legislation in Kentucky and Ohio. You know, someone like Hunter. Clearly, this Hunter dude had made an impact on the American Diabetes Associationand the Indiana legislature. I soon learned that Indianas Safe at School law had been dubbed Hunters Law after the compelling testimony and strong advocacy of then 10-year-old Hunter, who had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 7. Fast forward to early this year, when legislation was introduced in Indiana to repeal several sections of the education code, including Hunters Law. Upon hearing of the threat to his eponymous law, Hunter, now an 18-year-old high school senior, dropped everything to travel to the Indiana Capitol to testify again. With the confidence and maturity of a seasoned advocate, Hunter explained to the Indiana Senate Education Committee how dangerous it would be to repeal a law that protects students with diabetes. Hunters advocacyand that of his mother, Kathyresulted in the introduction and adoption of an amendment to preserve the states Safe at School law. His testimony was so effective that even the sponsor of the bill to repeal Hunters Law supported the amendment to save it. After a senior football season filled with honors, awards, and recognitions, Hunter will be kicking for the DePauw University football team in Greencastle, Indiana, this fall. He will also continue his diabetes advocacy and further prove that people living with diabetes are leading effective, productive, and inspiring lives. Gary Dougherty is associate director of State Government Continue reading >>

History and mission[edit] Formed in 1940, the ADA was founded by 28 physicians.[1] During its first 30 years, the association limited its membership to physicians, health professionals and corporations. In 1970, the association underwent a reorganization during which membership was expanded to include general members. Now the ADA is a volunteer-driven organization based in Alexandria, Virginia, with about 90 local offices across the United States.[2] The mission of the ADA is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.[3] To fulfill this mission, the association funds research, publishes scientific findings, provides information and other services to people with diabetes, their families, health professionals and the public. The association is also actively involved in advocating for scientific research and for the rights of people with diabetes.[3] The association acts on its mission through a number of critical programs and activities that are directed to a broad range of constituents, including consumers, research scientists, health care professionals, corporations and communities. In 1994, the Chronicle of Philanthropy, an industry publication, study showed that the American Diabetes Association was ranked as the 18th "most Continue reading >>

Hunter Sego '19 Represents Depauw In The American Diabetes Association's Kiss-a-pig Campaign
Hunter Sego '19 Represents DePauw in the American Diabetes Association's Kiss-A-Pig Campaign Hunter Sego '19 Represents DePauw in the American Diabetes Association's Kiss-A-Pig Campaign Hunter W. Sego 19 has spent most of his life raising awareness of Type 1 diabetes, and he hopes that his latest efforts will place him on center court of Bankers Life Fieldhouse on April 12. He and Kaitlin Katie D. Browning 18 are representing DePauw in a competition between universities for the American Diabetes Association's Kiss-A-Pig Campaign. The pig is significant because it was the first successful source of insulin for people living with the disease. They are competing against students from Ball State University, IUPUI, Hanover College and Purdue University. If they raise the most money, Sego will -- on behalf of DePauw -- kiss a pig during halftime of the Indiana Pacers versus the New York Knicks basketball game. Donations to the American Diabetes Association can be made here . Every dollar donated counts as a vote for DePauw. Both students are from Madison, Ind. Sego is a Global Ambassador for Team Type 1, and Browning is his campaign manager for this event. Sego was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes one month before his eighth birthday. While he has faced many challenges along the way, he says the greatest has been combating misconceptions surrounding the disease. Hes been to Congress multiple times to speak to U.S. representatives and senators, working to promote awareness and raise funding for Type 1 Diabetes needs. (Sego at left with U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly) In addition, Sego has a law named after him and his efforts to raise awareness about diabetes. Diabetes Is A Serious Problem In Indiana, According To The American Diabetes Association
Diabetes is a Serious Problem in Indiana, According to the American Diabetes Association According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes is a serious problem, particularly in Indiana. More than 750,000 children and adults in Indiana suffer from all forms of diabetes, including type1, type 2 and gestational. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes found in Obstructive Sleep Apnea patients. Dental Sleep Medicine education company, Sleep Group Solutions offers continuing education lectures on the topic, to teach dentists how to screen and treat for snoring and sleep apnea, and discuss risk factors involved. Indianapolis lecture is on November 21/22 at the Hilton Garden Inn, with Dr. George Jones as the speaker. It would be a difficult task to find someone who does not personally know an individual with diabetes. Hoosiers are increasingly feeling the effects of this disease. Approximately 1 in 4 of those who have diabetes does not know it. And at least 1.9 million Hoosiers are living with pre-diabetes, putting them at risk for type 2 diabetes in the future. "We know that diabetics have much more difficulty with regulation of fat and weight gainpossibly related to the concentrations of leptin released from their adipocytes (fat cells)," saysDr. George Jones a General Dentist and Dental Sleep Medicine expert in Sunset Beach, NC. During Dr. Jonses two day lecture he will lead the class through a proven turnkey protocol which dentists are implementing to provide treatment and screening options for patients. The protocol includes scientific data, medical collaborations, home sleep testing, instrumentation, insurance and billing, oral appliances, and marketing. The protocol we discuss during the lecture is proven, and it works. We have been following it for Continue reading >>

Indiana: American Diabetes Association
This information was prepared by the American Diabetes Association, a national leader in diabetes information and advocacy. It covers state rules on diabetes care in Colorado schools, and may not include all the important details. We strive to be constantly up to date, but laws can change. It is not a substitute for professional legal advice. 1. Does Indiana allow school staff members who are not health care professionals to administer insulin? Yes. If a school has a child with diabetes, the principal must recruit volunteer unlicensed health aids. A qualified health professional must train these volunteers to administer insulin: a diabetes training program for volunteer health aids [] must include the following: [] Performing tests to check glucose and ketone levels, and recording the results. []Properly administering glucagon, insulin, or other emergency treatments as prescribed, and recording the results. Burns Ind. Code Ann. 20-34-5-15 . 2. Does Indiana allow school staff members who are not health care professionals to administer glucagon? Yes. As stated above, the principal must recruit volunteer unlicensed health aids who will be trained in "administering glucagon." Burns Ind. Code Ann. 20-34-5-15 . 3. Does Indiana allow students to self-manage diabetes care at school anytime and anywhere? Yes. Indiana clearly allows glucose testing, insulin administration, and any other type of diabetes care any time, anywhere: a school shall, except in an emergency, allow the student to attend to the management and care of the student's diabetes if the student has been evaluated and determined to be capable of doing so as reflected in the student's individual health plan []including [] in the classroom, in any area of the school or school grounds, or at any school related activ Continue reading >>
