Houston Healthcare Education Program Merits ADA Recognition The prestigious American Diabetes Association (ADA) Education Recognition Certificate for a quality diabetes self-management education program was awarded to the Houston Healthcare Diabetes Management Program in early August. The Houston Healthcare program was originally recognized in September of 2000. ADA believes this program offers high-quality education that is an essential component of effective diabetes treatment. The Associations Education Recognition Certificate assures that educational programs meet the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs. These Standards were developed and tested under the auspices of the National Diabetes Advisory Board in 1983 and were revised by the diabetes community in 1994, 2000 and 2007. Programs apply for Recognition voluntarily. Programs that achieve Recognition status have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide participants with comprehensive information about diabetes management. The process gives professionals a national standard by which to measure the quality of services they provide, comments Beth Jones, Director of Community Education at Houston Healthcare. And, of course, it assures the consumer that he or she will likely receive high-quality care. Education Recognition status is verified by an official certificate from ADA and awarded for four years. According to the American Diabetes Association, there are 25.8 million people or 8.5 percent of the population in the United States who have diabetes. While an estimated 18.8 million have been diagnosed, unfortunately, 7.0 million people are not aware that they have this disease. Each day approximately 5,205 people are diagnosed with diabetes. Many will first learn Continue reading >>

American Diabetes Association Alert! Day 2017
American Diabetes Association Alert! Day 2017 Diabetes is an epidemic in the United States. Many people have diabetes yet they have not been diagnosed. Are you at risk for diabetes? If you ask the average person this question, they would say no. Many people are unaware of their diabetes risk level. Heres a short story about Jennifer*, who learned about risk for having diabetes. Jennifer, a 51 year old female of Hispanic heritage, is a married, working mother of two. Family is very important to her, as her children are now teenagers. Her marriage has been going great for 25 years. Her job as a team manager for a computer firm was exciting, but was stressful, as she often had to bring work home. Jennifers parents were both living, however her father has had Type 2 diabetes for fifteen years, and takes one pill for it every day. Her OBGYN told her years ago that her blood sugar levels were high during both pregnancies; however, everything seemed to return to normal after giving birth. Recently, at one of Jennifers regular doctors appointments, the doctor told her to lose weight, for she may develop diabetes. She was shocked, as she had not even thought that she was indeed at risk for having diabetes. All Jennifer knew was that taking that one pill for high blood pressure was enough, and she did not want to take any more pills. She had started a walking program, at least three days per week, for about thirty minutes each day, but deep down wondered if that would be enough. Some days exercise was placed on the back burner, because her schedule was so busy. Her kids always needed to be taken somewhere for school and extra-curricular activities and she had to take care of the home, fix dinner, work, find time for other family activities. But in the back of her mind, Jennifer Continue reading >>

Gimmal And Kpmg Honored By American Diabetes Association Houston
Last night at Caf Adobe in Houston, the American Diabetes Association Houstons TourdeCure event planners held an appreciation dinner honoring top fundraisers, champions, red riders, and volunteers. Gimmal, along with our co-sponsors KPMG Houston , was recognized as a top fundraiser! This was a really great event and a first class bike ride for riders of any skill. Donations are still open, and theyve got a ways to go, so please donate now ! According to a 2017 report of 2015 data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 9.4% of the adult population of the United States, or roughly 30.3 million people, suffer from diabetes, with 23.8% of the affected undiagnosed. A further 84.1 million adults, just over a third of the U.S. population, are pre-diabetic. Diabetes is a serious health risk that affects us all, if not directly than indirectly through its impact upon our families, friends, and communities. Awareness and proactive prevention are key to our ability to control and limit the development of this condition. The TourdeCure was held Saturday, Nov. 4 at Prairie View A&M. With 81 riding teams, over 1,000 riders, and over a half-million dollars raised so far, the Houston TourdeCure provides tremendous support for the American Diabetes Association. The KPMG Houston-Gimmal team has already exceeded our contribution goal , but donations are still open and greatly appreciated. We want to help the American Diabetes Association reach their total goal of one million dollars, and anything you can give will be appreciated! Gimmal had a number of riders as well as red-riders, who are those affected by diabetes. A special thanks to Charlie Cole, who was our team captain and also a sub-committee chair of the event. A shout out to Beth Murphy, executive committee co-chair and KPM Continue reading >>
