The American Diabetes Association (ADA) is a nonprofit health organization "providing diabetes research, information and advocacy", subsidized in part by pharmaceutical corporate benefactors. [1] In May 2006, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the ADA "privately enlisted an Eli Lilly & Co. executive to chart its growth strategy and write its slogan." Lilly executive Emerson "Randy" Hall, Jr. told the Inquirer that he helped the organization market itself and came up with its slogan, 'Cure. Care. Commitment.' He estimated that his work would have cost "hundreds of thousands" from a contractor. [2] Also, the Inquirer reported that the ADA did not include in its 2000-2001 annual report that Hall had been seconded into the organization. Hall, it reported, "moved into its Alexandria, Va., headquarters and coached it on growth strategies, all paid by Lilly." American Diabetes Association finds new way to engage donors and increase employer matching donations Association Finds New Way to Engage Donors Powerful program increases employer matching donations Our clients mission to lead the fight against [a deadly disease] and fight for those affected by it requires serious funding. Seeking a new method to increase donations and the effectiveness of its fundraising, the nonprofit organization turned to Curtis 1000 for help. Curtis 1000 recommended the Gift Accelerator program, a tool for maximizing gift donations by screening the recipient database, appending employer gift matching information and implementing customized appeals. Curtis 1000 began by scrubbing the clients data to identify records with employer gift matching program information. The updated data was added to the customers master database, providing call center volunteers the additional information they needed to target donors with gift matching opportunities and customize their talk track accordingly. The data files also included matching gift instructions and forms to allow volunteers to quickly and easily fill out forms with the donor. Kroger raising funds for American Diabetes Association Krogers Atlanta Division has teamed up with the American Diabetes Association to help further its mission to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes, the Cincinnati-based grocery store chain announced July 28. More than 30 million Americans are living with diabetes, and every 21 seconds another person is diagnosed with this disease putting them at two to four times higher risk of stroke, nerve damage and cardiovascular disease. July 30 through Aug. 12, shoppers at Kroger stores in Georgia, South Carolina and eastern Alabama are encouraged to purchase $1 Stop Diabetes icons at checkout and at Kroger pharmacies to support the association, with a goal of raising $150,000. The Atlanta Division is pleased to team up with the American Diabetes Association to raise awareness about a disease that affects us all, Felix Turner, corporate affairs manager for Krogers Atlanta Division, said in a news release. Our hope with this initiative is two-fold we want to raise funds to help prevent and cure this disease as well as help our customers and associates become more aware of the serious health risks associated with diabetes. On Feb. 27 Ho-Chunk Gaming-Black River Falls presented The American Diabetes Association a check for $1,500. This was done through a Pin-Up initiative where guests and employees would donate $1 and receive a hand on which to write their name and it would be put up in the area that they donated. These hands were at the hotel, cafe, buffet and Poker Bar. Between all four areas, $902 was raised and the casino donated $598 to be able to make the $1,500 donation. Background Shortly after the discovery of insulin in 1921, physicians began realizing neither diabetes nor its complications were going away. While life was being extended for many with diabetes, doctors still did not understand how and why the disease was able to continue its ravages, even in those treated with insulin. It was clear that there was much more to be learned about diabetes. In 1940, a group of 26 physicians came together to form the American Diabetes Association. Their primary intent was to promote the scientific study of diabetes. While this singular pursuit helped advance diabetes knowledge in the medical community, it also served to exclude the very people who were most impacted by the disease those with diabetes and the families that supported them. For 30 years, the Association functioned as a professional society, open only to physicians, scientists and researchers. When I checked out I was offered the chance to get a second sub for free, if I made a donation to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) AND bought a 30-ounce soda. In other words, contribute to fight diabetes while drinking about 20 teaspoons of sugar! The irony of this pledge is better left to Jon Stewart . Or John Oliver (if you havent seen his bit on sugar , you should). Its almost unbelievable that the ADA endorses this campaign at all, but it does . Subways Stop Diabetes Hands campaign is in its fifth year and has raised over $1.4 million dollars. On its own website , the ADA calls out soda as a leading cause of type II diabetes: The American Diabetes Association recommends that people should avoid intake of sugar-sweetened beverages to help prevent diabetes. Sugar-sweetened beverages include beverages likeregular soda[which] will raise blood glucose and can provide several hundred calories in just one serving! Amazingly, Subway is not the first diabetes foundation to tie corporate sponsorship to soda. In 2011, a KFC in Utah did the same thing for the Juveniles Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) (see KFC Shows They Dont Give a Cluck About Juvenile Diabetes ). In fairness to JDRF, the affiliation was limited to one store and not a national campaign, though the organizations response to a national outcry over connecting a juvenile diabetes foundation with drinking soda was alarmingly weak.
