Accordingly, this position statement provides evidence-based principles and recommendations for diabetes medical nutrition therapy. The rationale for this position statement is discussed in the American Diabetes Association technical review “Evidence-Based Nutrition Principles and Recommendations for the Treatment and Prevention of Diabetes and Related Complications,” which discusses in detail the published research for each principle and recommendation (1). Historically, nutrition recommendations for diabetes and related complications were based on scientific knowledge, clinical experience, and expert consensus; however, it was often difficult to discern the level of evidence used to construct the recommendations. To address this problem, the 2002 technical review (1) and this position statement provide principles and recommendations classified according to the level of evidence available using the American Diabetes Association evidence grading system. My husband and I keep disagreeing on the number of calories a pregnant woman should be eating. I usually end up between 1200 and 1300 but he wants me closer to 1800. Is anyone else keeping track? Also, how many grams of protein are you eating? If it's an average/normal pregnancy it says 1800 in first trimester, 2200 second and 2400 third. How are you managing with only 1800 calories? 1300 is probably not enough, unless you are healthy and still gaining weight. 1300 is more of a diet number. 1200 is the lowest amount anyone should go. I'd agree with your husband. I'm not sure 1200-1300 calories a day is sufficient even if you're not pregnant. Are you gaining weight? I'd ask your doctor about it. I have gestational diabetes and I'm on a 1800 calorie diet. You should be getting at least 2000. I don't really track my calories or anything, just eat when I'm hungry, which seems to be a lot, but honestly I probably only eat 1500/day? My OB is extremely pleased with my gain, 19lbs so far and it's all belly, and the babe is measuring right where he should be!
