Almost all parts of the moringa plant are edible, from the immature seed pods called drumsticks, to the leaves, mature seeds, and roots. The leaves are said to be the most nutritious part of the plant. According to the Food Composition Tables (FCT) developed by the Food and Nutrition and Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST), malunggay leaves are significant sources of B vitamins, vitamin C, beta-carotene, zinc, potassium, and iron, among other significant nutrients. Malunggay is a very common ingredient in Asian cuisines in countries such as Sri Lanka, India, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Thailand, and Pakistan. In the Philippines, malunggay leaves are added to broth, like in the famous tinola, a traditional chicken soup dish with ginger and green papaya or chayote, to make a nutritious soup. The leaves are also processed with olive oil and salt to become pesto-like pasta sauce or crushed and mixed with lemons or citrus fruits to make juices or ice candies. Among its many miraculous benefits, moringa can balance blood sugar levels. The FNRI-DOST conducted a study to determine the changes in glucose of people with moderately-raised glucose levels using malunggay leaves powder to verify this claim. It was found out that food products such as buns, fish sausages, and veggie soups with added malunggay leave powder decreased fasting blood sugar, thus, possessing strong potential in fighting diabetes. Moringa For Diabetes And Blood Pressure

Moringa's Role In Supporting Good Health Thanks to high stress levels, millions of adult Americans are diagnosed with Diabetes & high blood pressure each year. The problem extends to children as well; Type 1 diabetes (also known as Juvenile Diabetes) affects 1 in 400 children and adolescents. In a person suffering from diabetes, the body does not produce enough insulin, which is necessary to break down glucose into energy. A build up of this glucose can lead to further complications. According to the American Diabetes Association, 25.8 million children and adults have diabetes in the US. For those suffering from high blood pressure – 1 in 3 adult Americans - the force of blood against the walls of arteries stays higher than normal. High blood pressure is the leading cause of death in the US, and is regarded as a lifelong diseases and precursor to more serious ailments like stroke and cardiac arrest. Yet, healthy living with the right exercise and nutrition can help those who suffer from diabetes and blood pressure to lower their risk considerably. Moringa has been used by diabetics and those with high blood pressure with good results. It is truly a superfood, which contains all the right ingredients to help maintain healthier blood pressure levels within a normal range and acts as an unparalleled nutritional support for diabetics. Here’s why. Moringa contains: Vitamin C, which helps support the body’s production of nitric oxide, which in turn aids the normal functioning of blood vessels, and which may prevent the development of diabetic cataract. Calcium, which acts as a muscle relaxant. 4 times the potassium found in bananas (when compared pound for pound), which helps lower sodium content, thereby decreasing blood pressure. Magnesium, Zinc, and Vitamin E, which Continue reading >>

Moringa Oleifera Can Help Treat Diabetes, Study Finds

(NaturalNews) The leaves of the Moringa oleifera tree are one of Asia's most nutrient-dense foods. In fact, just one serving of these leaves in powdered form contains almost 50 types of antioxidants and almost 90 different nutrients. Unsurprisingly, numerous studies have linked long-term consumption of Moringa leaves to the treatment of countless health conditions such as osteoporosis, macular degeneration, high blood pressure, obesity and even cancer. A recent study published in the March 2014 issue of Acta Histochemica, however, suggests that we add another condition to that list: diabetes mellitus, the increasingly common metabolic disease that affects an estimated 8.3 percent of the United States population. Significant results For the study, the Egyptian researchers fed aqueous extracts of Moringa oleifera leaves to albino rats that were suffering from streptozotocin-induced diabetes. During the trial period, they monitored the fasting plasma glucose levels of the rats, as well as their levels of glutathione (an antioxidant found in Moringa that contains antidiabetic properties) and malondialdehyde (a toxic byproduct of lipid oxidation that is often found in high levels in people suffering from diabetes). At the end of the trial, the rats that were fed Moringa extracts fared far better than the control group. Specifically, the extracts reduced their fasting plasma glucose levels from 380 percent to 145 percent (i.e. their blood sugar levels were reduced by more than 2.5 times). The extract also reduced the rats' levels of harmful malondialdehyde from 385 percent to 186 percent and increased their levels of the important antioxidant, glutathione, from 22 percent to 73 percent -- a significant improvement in all three areas. "Experimental findings clearly indicate th Continue reading >>

Can Moringa Leaf Cure Your Diabetes?

Can Moringa Leaf Cure Your Diabetes?

In Asia and Africa, the Moringa leaf is hailed as a cure-all. Although it is most commonly used to treat malnutrition in developing countries, some doctors allege that the Moringa leaf can help over 300 diseases, including diabetes. Despite these claims, people in the Western Hemisphere know little about this natural supplement’s possible benefits. The Moringa leaf is a nutrient powerhouse because it possesses large quantities of vitamins A, C, calcium, iron, and protein. Due to its abundance of vitamin A, Moringa may prevent diabetic retinopathy. Research has shown that vitamin A supports eye health by preventing inflammation and strengthening the corneas. This is significant because 28.5% of people over 40 with diabetes have developed diabetic retinopathy between 2005 and 2008. Moringa is also rich in vitamin C. Combined with insulin, vitamin C can halt blood vessel damage in people with Type 1 diabetes, decreasing their risk for chest pain, heart attack, and stroke. Some users credit the Moringa herb for reducing tumour size and blood pressure. The supplement can also boost your immune system. For people with diabetes, these benefits could be significant due to their increased risk for heart disease and cancer. For people with insulin resistance, dangerously high levels of blood glucose could cause excessive amounts of inflammation, resulting in limited blood flow. This lack of blood flow can lead to a heart attack or stroke. Weight management is another potential pro in taking Moringa leaf because of the amount of protein it possesses — foods high in protein can reduce cravings in between meals. Moringa leaves can be eaten raw, cooked, or made into powder. While raw Moringa leaves taste like radishes, cooked Moringa is similar to spinach. Using Moringa powder in Continue reading >>

This plant grows well in countries with a tropical climate. However even if you live in a temperate region, you may still be able to enjoy the health benefits of malunggay. Moringa Oleifera: A Treatment For Diabetes

Moringa Oleifera: A Treatment For Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease that is characterized by problems involving the hormone insulin. In healthy people, the pancreas releases insulin; insulin then works to help the body use and store the fat and sugar that is derived from the food that people eat. With diabetes, insulin can be compromised in a couple of different ways. In some cases, the pancreas doesn't produce any insulin at all. Other times, the body does not react in the right way to insulin - this is known as "insulin resistance." Finally, diabetes is sometimes characterized by a pancreas that produces an insufficient volume of insulin. The Two Types of Diabetes It's important to understand that diabetes is a disease that has no cure. Once a person develops diabetes, they will suffer from the condition for the rest of their life. Although diabetes may be triggered by a variety of different phenomena involving the pancreas and insulin production - or lack thereof - it can also be divided into two distinct types. Type 1 Diabetes - Type 1 diabetes typically first arises in people under the age of 20, although it can happen at any age. Insulin-producing cells - known as beta cells - in the pancreas are completely destroyed by the body's immune system. In turn, the pancreas can no longer produce any insulin and insulin injections must be administered. Type 2 Diabetes - With type 2 diabetes, a person's pancreas still produces insulin; the problem is that it either doesn't create enough insulin, or the person's body is resistant to the insulin that is produced. Type 2 diabetes commonly occurs in obese and overweight individuals - usually over the age of 40 - and is sometimes called "adult onset diabetes." Managing Diabetes There is no cure for diabetes. However, there are several ways to manage the condition in order Continue reading >>

The study says that malunggay not only reduces blood sugar levels, but also lowers the risks of stroke and heart attack. High blood sugar reading is just the tip of the metabolic syndrome iceberg associated with diabetes. Less attention has been given to the diabetics chronic inflammatory state. Thats why even with controlled sugar, many diabetic patients suffer the high risks of stroke and heart attack. Almost every modern disease is caused or affected by inflammation. It is the normal response of the immune system to infection and trauma. In diabetic patients, this defense system becomes impaired and, if left untreated, can compromise the integrity of the blood vessels, dramatically increasing the risks of stroke and heart attack. In the first cohort study of M. oleifera on humans performed by Dr. Rainier Nery Mozo, with Dr. Imelda Caole-Ang as adviser, the leaves of this wispy tree were studied specifically for their properties affecting the hs-CRP (high specific C-reactive protein), a strong predictor of cardiovascular risks and death produced by the liver when there is inflammation, and hemoglobin A1c, the standard test that determines the past three months blood sugar control in people with diabetes. The 12-week study, conducted November last year and peer-reviewed by the Continue reading >>
