Later, all the participants were tested for the bio-markers such as rate of glycemia and lipid, immune system, functioning of liver and kidneys, inflammation and ferrous toxicity. "We discovered that green tea reinforced the anti-oxidant defences of those who had reached the pre-diabetic stage. And most importantly, the tea did not have any negative impact," Bahorun said. Another group of 127 people participated in the study on the impact of fermented papaya on diabetes. Subjects consumed oolong tea (1,500 ml) or water for 30 days each in a randomized crossover design. Tea was not consumed for 14 days prior to treatments. RESULTS—Relative to initial concentrations, oolong tea markedly lowered concentrations of plasma glucose (from 229 ± 53.9 to 162.2 ± 29.7 mg/dl, P < 0.001) and fructosamine (from 409.9 ± 96.1 to 323.3 ± 56.4 μmol/l, P < 0.01), whereas the water control group had not changed (208.7 ± 61.0 vs. 232.3 ± 63.1 mg/dl for glucose and from 368.4 ± 85.0 to 340.0 ± 76.1 μmol/l for fructosamine). CONCLUSIONS—Oolong tea may be an effective adjunct to oral hypoglycemic agents in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Abstract Green tea and coffee consumption have been widely popular worldwide. In addition to this caffeine effect, green tea and coffee consumption have always been at the center of discussions about human health, disease, and longevity. In particular, green tea catechins are involved in many biological activities such as antioxidation and modulation of various cellular lipid and proteins. Thus, they are beneficial against degenerative diseases, including obesity, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and various inflammatory diseases. Some reports also suggest that daily consumption of tea catechins may help in controlling type 2 diabetes. However, other studies have reported that chronic consumption of green tea may result in hepatic failure, neuronal damage, and exacerbation of diabetes, suggesting that interindividual variations in the green tea effect are large. This review will focus on the effect of green tea catechins extracted from the Camellia sinensis plant on type 2 diabetes and obesity, and the possible mechanistic explanation for the experimental results mainly from our laboratory.
