Join the community I have noticed that there seems to be a pattern of my sugars being really high the morning after sex. I thought at first that it might be just a coincidence, but since I have been noting EVERYTHING to spot patterns in highs/lows, it is cropping up too much for it to be that. My reading can be 6 before bed and then 17 in the morning? It's incredibly frustrating and diminishes the after happy in the morning when you wake up feeling awful. Does anybody else seem to have the same thing happen? If so, would you mind sharing how you managed to control it? I don't really want to plan when I'm going to be intimate and adjust basal rates etc, as it's already a mood killer having to test beforehand - though experience has taught me that almost going unconscious during is an even bigger turn off! So I always test lol. I can laugh now, but I assure you that it was not in the least bit amusing at the time! However, if adjusting basal is the only way, I think I'll have to compromise some of the time. I can't really ignore it because it would make my morning readings frequently high (lucky me hehe ) and that is not going to do me any favours in the long run. I would really appreciate the advice ... I think the boyfriend is terrified that I'm going to tell him 'no more' Hi Ratty Kat, ermm, this would be funny if your sugars weren't so high. Rather than play with basal do you need to take a bolus before hand? Yep I know what that sounds like -spontaneous diabetes ain't. Or if not instead Continue reading >>

Is The Sex Of The Baby Associated With Gestational Diabetes Risk?

Is The Sex Of The Baby Associated With Gestational Diabetes Risk?

A question that has been raised a few times in our Facebook support group, is the sex of the baby associated with gestational diabetes risk? Following a research study published yesterday in PLOS ONE, the question has risen once again. Can gender really have an impact of whether you are more likely to develop gestational diabetes? Over the last few years there have been a few studies on this and the answer concluded is yes! There is an increased risk in developing gestational diabetes if you are expecting a boy... A meta-analysis of 20 studies between 1 January 1950 and 4 April 2015 published in Diabetologia in November 2015, comparing data on 2,402,643 women showed that there is a 4% increased risk of gestational diabetes in women carrying boys. We identified 320 studies through electronic searches and nine studies through manual searches. Twenty studies met the inclusion criteria, yielding data on 2,402,643 women. Pooled analysis of these studies demonstrated an increased risk of GDM in women carrying a male fetus compared with women carrying a female fetus (RR 1.04; 95% CI 1.02, 1.06). This result was confirmed in a sensitivity analysis including only studies that applied a stringent definition of GDM (RR 1.03; 95% CI 1.01, 1.06) (I 2 = 0%, p = 0.66). Pregnant women carrying a boy have a 4% higher relative risk of GDM than those carrying a girl. The fetus thus may have previously unsuspected effects on maternal glucose metabolism in pregnancy. Sex of the baby and risk of gestational diabetes mellitus in the mother: a systematic review and meta-analysis A further study published in Diabetes Care in May 2015 on 1,074 pregnant women also showed an increased risk of gestational diabetes in those that were expecting boys... Interaction Between Male Fetus and Classic GDM R Continue reading >>

Sex And Type 1 Diabetes

Sex And Type 1 Diabetes

Editor’s note: Contains adult content Know Your Blood Sugar Levels Before and After Let’s be real. Sex is a unique form of physical exercise in that most of us usually look forward to doing it. Like any other activity that requires physical exertion, getting it on will most likely affect your blood sugar levels. If you find yourself dripping in sweat and can hear your own heartbeat, you might be really into your partner; however, there’s also a chance that your blood sugar has spiked and dropped. It’s good practice to check your blood sugar levels before, during and after you have sex — get creative and think about incorporating this into foreplay and post coital cuddling. Maintain Blood Glucose Levels In The Moment Stock Your Nightstand: Part of what makes sex fun is its unpredictability. That said, it’s important to expect the unexpected in the bedroom if you have Type 1 diabetes. Stock your nightstand with quick fix supplies, such as juice boxes, granola bars and glucose tablets. Having these things an arm’s reach away will allow you to quickly recalibrate your blood sugar if it drops during sex. Take Breaks: It’s totally reasonable to hit pause in the middle of sex if you experience fatigue and sense a drop in your blood sugar. Check your insulin and eat a snack before you get back to having fun. Listen to your body and let your partner know if you need a moment to refuel. Think About What You’re Drinking: Alcohol can play a role in dramatic drops in blood sugar levels. If you choose to mix drinking and sex, stick to white wine, champagne or other beverages with high sugar contents to keep your blood sugar in check. Consider Wearing a Continuous Glucose Monitor: Continuous glucose monitors are devices approved by the FDA that keep track of your blo Continue reading >>

Diabetes

Diabetes

If you have ever asked the question “What is diabetes, exactly?”, then you have come to the right place. Diabetes is a illness that relates to problems with the hormone insulin. When functioning correctly, the pancreas releases insulin which then lets the body retain or utilize sugars and fats taken in through the food we eat. Diabetes occurs when: No insulin is produced Insufficient amounts of insulin is produced The body does not react to insulin in the correct way, a disorder known as “insulin resistance” Suitable management regarding the disease is needed after a individual has been diagnosed with diabetes. Generally three types of diabetes is referred to, namely: Type 1 Diabetes: This is when the beta cells (Insulin-producing cells) are killed by the body’s immune system. As a result the body does not produce any insulin. Subsequently insulin injections must be used to regulate the blood sugar levels. Type 1 diabetes may occur from as early as the age of 20 and makes up roughly 10% of all people suffering from diabetes. Type 2 Diabetes: In this case the pancreas does produce insulin, but it is either an inadequate amount or the body is resistant to it. Both of these cases result in glucose not being able to enter the body’s cells. It is most commonly found in people who are overweight and usually older than 40 years of age. There are however instances of type 2 diabetes where this is not the case, and these instances are rising due to the increase in child obesity. Usually type 2 diabetes is controlled by making healthy lifestyle choices. Sometimes medication is used in addition to a healthy way of living. Pre-Diabetes is when a individual has higher blood sugar levels than normal, but not yet as high as type 2 diabetes. Pre-diabetes can develop into ty Continue reading >>

11 Tips For A Healthy Sex Life If You Have Diabetes

iStock/dolgachov Sex can act like insulin, lowering your blood sugar, so it's a good idea to check your levels before things get frisky. If your blood sugar is at the normal level or on the low side, you may need to adjust your insulin or eat something small before or after sex to avoid making yourself hypoglycemic. If you have an insulin pump, consider unhooking it during sex. Here are some good snacks to eat with diabetes. iStock/bhofack2 Alcohol and vigorous sex both lower blood sugar, so combining the two could cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar. If you've had a glass of wine, be extra sure to monitor your blood glucose before slipping between the sheets. Here's what else you need to know about alcohol and blood sugar. Be especially touchy-feely if one of you has nerve damage iStock/AleksandarNakic It's rare, but in some cases nerve damage reduces sensitivity in the genitals in people who have diabetes. You can compensate for this with additional gentle touching in the right places, or try a vibrator. Don't shy away from lube iStock/zoliky Vaginal dryness is common among women who have diabetes. A simple fix is to keep water-based lubricants in the drawer of your nightstand. Avoid oil-based lubes, such as petroleum jelly, because they can damage condoms and lead to bacterial infection. Exercise to increase your libido iStock/michaeljung Here's even more motivation to get your daily dose of exercise: it can boost your sex drive. Exercise improves blood flow, which will improve the function and sensitivity of genitalia. Both men and women with diminished sex dive will benefit from routine exercise, experts say. When Diabetes Affects Your Sex Life

When Diabetes Affects Your Sex Life

Mike’s doctor looked and sounded concerned. “Your sugars are up, your blood pressure is up, and you’ve gained 10 pounds since I last saw you, ” she said. “You were doing so well. What happened? ” “I don’t know,” said Mike. “I’m just down. Exercising and checking my blood glucose don’t seem worth the effort now. My neuropathy is burning holes in my feet. It’s been a hard year.” “Sounds to me like you’re depressed,” said the doctor. She then wrote out a prescription for a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) for Mike’s depression and another for a refill of Mike’s usual blood pressure medicine, but this time with a higher dose. The doctor didn’t ask about Mike’s sex life, and Mike didn’t volunteer that what was really bothering him was that he and his wife Barbara had stopped having sex about 10 months before. He couldn’t count on getting erections or keeping them, and without them, he withdrew, both physically and emotionally. He and Barbara were miserable. Unfortunately, both of the medicines his doctor had just prescribed can have the side effects of decreasing sex drive and making it harder for men to have erections. So the new treatments were potentially going to make Mike’s problem worse. Mike hadn’t mentioned his sexual problems to his doctor because he felt embarrassed about them, and his doctor apparently didn’t think to ask about sexual issues. Had she known about Mike’s erection difficulties, she might have prescribed a drug for erectile dysfunction rather than an antidepressant. But Mike had already bought some Viagra on the Internet. It had helped a little with the erections, but not much, and it did nothing for his energy level or low mood. Barbara was at her wit’s end. She thought Mike’s wit Continue reading >>

The Effects Of Sugar On Male Health

The Effects Of Sugar On Male Health

Eshe Asale is a holistic massage therapist who began writing in 1995 with articles appearing on various websites and in "Iqra" newspaper and the "Between Love, Hope and Fear" anthology. She holds a massage therapy certificate from Lourdes Institute, a Master of Arts in media studies/communications from Goldsmiths University and a Bachelor of Arts in writing and publishing/film studies from Middlesex University. A report given by the United States Department of Agriculture in 2010 states that the amount of sugar used by the average American since 1970 has increased significantly. Excess amounts of sugar, which is often added to processed foods, confectionery and beverages, can elevate your blood fat increasing your risk of heart disease. An overindulgence of sugar can also lead to obesity, which if left unchecked will inevitably increase your susceptibility to a myriad of other debilitating disorders such as diabetes type two and prostate cancer in men. Erectile dysfunction may also be experienced as a consequence of diabetes and cancer treatments. The more sugar you eat, the higher your blood-glucose level will be, which triggers the release of the hormone insulin making your body store fat. Eating a high quantity of sugar in one sitting causes your body to remain in the fat accumulation mode for longer periods. It's not always easy to detect foods that contain added sugars. Obvious items such as confectionery, cakes and deserts are loaded with refined sugar and provide empty calories. These foods can be reduced in an attempt to manage your health. Being cognizant of other more seemingly innocent foods such as pasta, rice and milk, which sometimes contain considerable amounts of sugar, will help you monitor your health. Large amounts of added sugars reduce high density Continue reading >>

Male And Female Sexual Dysfunction

Male And Female Sexual Dysfunction

This article originally appeared in Voice of the Diabetic, Volume 19, Number 1, Winter 2004 Edition, published by the Diabetes Action Network of the National Federation of the Blind. The principal symptom of diabetes, type 1 or type 2, is high blood sugar. In time, excess glucose in the blood can cause damage to the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and circulatory system. As human sexual response involves so many systems at the same time, it is not unusual to find a person with long-term diabetes experiencing sexual difficulties: ranging from diminished interest, slow response, discomfort, pain, and, for men, outright impotence. Though these problems express differently in men and women, and sexuality is the sum of many different factors, having diabetes is a major predictor of sexual difficulties, for both men and women. Female Sexual Dysfunction Having diabetes can interfere with a woman's participation in and enjoyment of the sex act. Diabetic complications can make sex painful and unpleasant -- and reluctance to participate can be understandable. But the culture throws negative labels around, and, traditionally, women's sexual issues have not been addressed to the same depth as men's issues--so many medical professionals are less than fully "up to speed" on this subject, so less likely to ask their female patients, and only recently has the medical profession acknowledged any "female sexual dysfunction" at all--so there is a shortage of professional expertise here. Some doctors have real difficulty separating diabetogenic (caused by diabetes) difficulties from unrelated issues. More studies, especially of women with diabetes, are urgently needed. Too many assumptions are derived from the study of diabetic men, and need to be tested. Diabetic women, many of retirement age, wer Continue reading >>

Your Risk Of Erectile Dysfunction More Than Triples If You Have This Health Condition

Your Risk Of Erectile Dysfunction More Than Triples If You Have This Health Condition

High blood sugar can make it hard to get hard: Men with diabetes are significantly more likely to have erectile dysfunction that those with normal blood sugar readings, new research in the journal Diabetic Medicine concludes. That’s a problem, since diabetes cases have increased four-fold since 1980. After crunching the numbers from 145 studies including over 88,000 men who averaged 56 years old, the researchers determined that those with diabetes were more than three times as likely to have erectile dysfunction than healthy guys were. In fact, 59 percent of men with diabetes had ED. What’s more, men with diabetes tended to develop their erectile dysfunction 10 to 15 years earlier than those without the condition did, according to the study. (Want to keep your penis healthy for life? The Men’s Health Guide to Erectile Dysfunction is the only resource you need.) So how can high blood sugar sink you in the bedroom? Diabetes can damage your blood vessels and your nerves—both of which are needed for healthy erectile functioning, says Sean Skeldon, M.D., who has previously researched ED and diabetes, but was not involved in this study. (Here are 10 myths about erectile dysfunction you shouldn’t believe anymore.) Another important point: Erectile dysfunction is often considered a harbinger of heart disease. That’s because the blood vessel issues that cause ED—say, like plaque buildup—can also affect your heart, too. They just manifest first with problems in the bedroom, since your blood vessels in your penis are smaller than the ones that carry blood to your heart. Diabetes Pills Costing Just 2p Each Could Give Men's Love Lives A Lift

Diabetes Pills Costing Just 2p Each Could Give Men's Love Lives A Lift

Tablets costing just 2p each could be a new treatment for men with erection problems. New research suggests the medicine, called metformin, could boost a man's performance in the bedroom. The drug has been widely used on the NHS for many years to treat patients with type 2 diabetes. But now scientists think it may also work as an alternative to anti-impotence drugs such as Viagra or Cialis. Laboratory tests at the Georgia Health Sciences University in the U.S. show the diabetes drug boosts erectile function by relaxing blood vessels in the genital area, allowing blood to flow more freely into the penis. Although it has yet to be tested in humans, it could quickly emerge as a new treatment because it is readily available, extremely cheap and has an excellent safety record. One in ten men in the UK suffers erectile dysfunction at some point in their lives. Although drugs such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra have revolutionised treatment in the last ten years, around 30 per cent of men who take them experience no improvement. For these men, the only other options are to inject drugs straight into the penis, or use a pump that manually increases blood supply to the organ. Neither is very popular. Metformin has been attracting a great deal of attention from researchers in recent years, mostly because it seems to hold promise as a potentially powerful new weapon against certain cancers, such as prostate, breast and ovarian tumours. The drug belongs to a class of medicines known as biguanides, which have been used for decades to treat type 2 diabetes - the form of the disease that normally affects obese people and those over 40. Taken twice a day, it works by reducing the amount of glucose produced by the liver and helping cells mop up sugar that is circulating in the bloodstrea Continue reading >>

Diabetes Diet: Six Foods That May Help Maintain Healthy Blood Sugar Levels

Diabetes Diet: Six Foods That May Help Maintain Healthy Blood Sugar Levels

While there's no substitute for a balanced healthy diet, adding certain foods may help those with diabetes keep sugar levels under control. Coffee and cinnamon have made headlines as foods that might be able to help cut the risk of diabetes or help maintain healthy blood sugar levels. However, don't get the idea that such foods are magic pills for your diabetic diet. It's still important for people with diabetes to eat a balanced healthy diet and exercise to help manage the condition. Nevertheless, some foods, such as white bread, are converted almost immediately to blood sugar, causing a quick spike. Other foods, such as brown rice, are digested more slowly, causing a lower and gentler change in blood sugar. If you are trying to follow a healthy diet for diabetes, here are 6 suggestions that may help to keep your blood sugar in check. Porridge Porridge can help control blood sugar and the charity Diabetes UK recommends it to see you through the morning. Even though porridge is a carbohydrate, it's a very good carbohydrate. Because it's high in soluble fibre, it's slower to digest and it won't raise your blood sugar as much or as quickly. It's going to work better at maintaining a healthy blood sugar level over time. Not only does this high-quality carbohydrate offer a steadier source of energy than white bread, it can also help with weight loss. The soluble fibre in oats helps to keep us feeling fuller longer. That's important for people with type 2 diabetes, who tend to be overweight. If you reduce the weight, you usually significantly improve the glucose control. Barley isn't as popular as oats, but there's some evidence that barley, which is also high in soluble fibre, may also help with blood glucose control. Besides oats and barley, most whole grains are going to Continue reading >>

High Sugar In Men And Sperm Count

High Sugar In Men And Sperm Count

An estimated one in eight couples who want to have children experience the pain and frustration of infertility, according to the infertility website Resolve. In a third of the cases, male factors cause infertility; another 33 percent is caused by problems with the female partner and another third can be both partners or unknown causes. Diabetes -- high blood sugar -- can affect a man's fertility in several ways, including lowering sperm count in some cases. Diabetes and Infertility in Men Type 2 diabetes is more common among both men and women than type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disorder, MayoClinic.com explains. Lifestyle factors, such as being overweight or having high cholesterol levels, contribute to having type 2 diabetes. As the incidences of overweight and obesity have risen, so has the occurrence of type 2 diabetes. High glucose levels in the blood damages blood vessels throughout the body. In diabetic men, high glucose levels can cause impotence -- the inability to maintain an erection -- as well as damage to the sperm. In a Qatar study published in the December 2009 issue of "International Urology and Nephrology," 25 percent of the men with type 2 diabetes were infertile. Retrograde Ejaculation Men with high blood glucose levels can develop retrograde ejaculation, a condition where the semen goes back into the bladder rather than being ejaculated normally during sex. Nerve damage prevents bladder muscles from tightening and keeping sperm out of the bladder during ejaculation. The number of sperm in the semen might be normal, but because most or all of the semen doesn't exit the body during orgasm, few or no sperm reach the woman's vagina. The sperm count in the ejaculate will appear very low. Damaged Sperm Several studies have shown that men with type 2 diabet Continue reading >>

Killing Your Sex Drive One Bite At A Time: 5 Surprising Ways Sugar Lowers Libido

Killing Your Sex Drive One Bite At A Time: 5 Surprising Ways Sugar Lowers Libido

Our hormones don’t operate in a vacuum. They are interconnected, performing like a big musical symphony. When one becomes out of balance, others are sure to follow. Sex hormones, healthy blood sugar, and insulin balance are more intimately linked than you might think. Spikes in insulin, and the insulin resistance that results from eating too much sugar and flour, can lead to acne and irregular menstrual cycles and can make women lose hair where they want it and grow hair where they don’t. Men with blood sugar imbalances have trouble getting or maintaining erections and often get “man boobs.” We’ve somehow thought these and other symptoms become normal as we age. They don’t. Libido-crashing mood disorders in women and men reaching for a “little blue pill” do not need to be a part of the aging process. Bad habits such as drinking and smoking, exposure to environmental toxins, and being chronically stressed all diminish sex hormone balance. Yet, the biggest culprit that continually knocks sex hormones out of balance is sugar in all its many forms (including all flour products), which raises insulin and creates a hormonal domino effect. Once you understand how insulin can impact other hormones, you begin to connect the dots about how excessive sugar can wreck your sex life. 1. Sugar lowers testosterone. In men, insulin resistance brought on by excessive amounts of sugar drives down testosterone, the hormone responsible for numerous functions including sexual well-being. Sex drive and sexual function take a big hit. Decreased muscle mass and more belly fat are also repercussions of low testosterone in men. That excess body fat can increase levels of the hormone estrogen, leading to low sex drive and trouble getting erections. In a study published in Clinical Continue reading >>
