Can Adding Glucose Improve Fructose Absorption?

Can Adding Glucose Improve Fructose Absorption?

Read my blog on fructose intolerance, fructose malabsorption and FODMAPs. One of the mechanisms for fructose absorption in the small intestine requires an equal amount of glucose to be present in order to operate efficiently and move the fructose out of the gut and into the bloodstream. If there's no glucose around, the fructose gets stranded in the gut. That is why fruits with excess fructose relative to glucose are not suitable for low FODMAP diets. Can adding glucose to these high-fructose fruits make it easier for people with fructose malabsorption to tolerate them? Its not hard to buy glucose/dextrose and try for yourself whether adding some dextrose to high-fructose foods like fruit or honey will improves your tolerance. Tablets sold at the pharmacy for diabetics to raise their blood sugar quickly are made of dextrose. So are Smarties candies. You can buy dextrose in a jar for that matter from various supplement companies. How much dextrose would it take? Well, these foods vary in the exact ratio of fructose to glucose, but 5 grams of dextrose should more than cover the excess fructose in 1/2 cup of high-fructose fruit or a tablespoon of honey. Cautions: Its not a magic bullet. Fructose absorption can be overwhelmed by too much fructose even when there is plenty of glucose around, so keep the portions small if you decide to experiment. Also, most high FODMAP fruits have both excess fructose and contain sugar alcohols. Adding glucose/dextrose won't do anything for polyol absorption, so if that's a problem too, symptoms could result. Also, if bacterial overgrowth is present, adding sugar in larger amounts might not be the best course of action, since bacteria in the small intestine can access them even before they are absorbed. Powdered Alcohol: 5 Steps (with Pictures)

Powdered Alcohol: 5 Steps (with Pictures)

Contrary to what suspicious lawmakers may think, powdered alcohol is not the herald to the apocalypse. In April of 2014, a form of American-made powdered alcohol was approved for sale... with its approval quickly rescinded due to what I'd imagine to be bureaucratic red tape by the US Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau. Their belief was that its creators are degenerates who were plotting the downfall of American society, starting by getting everyone drunk: people could surreptitiously consume it or trick others into consuming it, mimic (and thus promote) drug use by snorting it, engage teenagers in underaged drinking with their kid-friendly flavors and packaging... the uninformed, paranoid list goes on and on. Since you can't buy it yet, why not just make it yourself? After the initial hubbub over powdered alcohol arose, Popular Science was kind enough to provide a recipe , but their actual instructions were somewhat lacking. My powdered alcohol isn't technically powdered alcohol; it's alcohol that has been trapped in powder. Yes, semantics. But it's light, dry, and if enough is consumed, you'll be six ways to Sunday drunk* in no time!** **This is false, as you'll need to eat a lot. A lot. Alcohol - use a high proof liquor. If you can get something akin to Everclear, use that - you'll need less powder to create an effective product. I used Bacardi 151, since we can't legally obtain 190 proof Everclear in California. The thing with the proof is that you can't think of it like a shot - you aren't taking a traditional shot. No one, aside from 21 year old frat boys (I was one, so I should know) likes taking shots of that stuff. It's nasty. But the more alcohol you start off with, the less you'll have to eat to get drunk. Maltodextrin - this is the powder you'll be usi Continue reading >>

Cost Average ($40 - $80) Safety No issues Abstract You know that sugar makes food sweet, but did you know that there are different kinds of sugar? Sucrose is the granulated sugar that you usually use for baking. Another kind of sugar, which is found in honey and in many fruits, is glucose. In this science project, you will measure the concentration of glucose in a variety of foods. You will use special test strips that change color in response to glucose to measure the glucose concentration in different foods. Dietary strategies to reduce postprandial glycemia are important in the prevention and treatment of diabetes. Nuts are rich in mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids, which may reduce hyperglycemia and improve metabolism. To evaluate the effectiveness of pistachio nut supplementation on glycemic and inflammatory measures in patients with type 2 diabetes. In this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover trial, 48 diabetic patients were equally assigned to groups A and B. Patients in group A received a snack of 25 g pistachio nuts twice a day for 12 weeks and group B received a control meal without nuts. After 12 weeks of intervention, the patients had an 8-week washout. Then the groups were displaced, and group B received the same amount of pistachios for 12 weeks. With respect to the total change in variables over both phases, there was a marked decrease in HbA1c (-0.4%) and fasting blood glucose (FBG) concentrations (-16 mg/dl) in the pistachio group compared with the control group (p 0.001 for both). There was no overall significant change in BMI, blood pressure, HOMA-IR, and C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations. Analys Continue reading >>

Dextrose | Dextrose Powder | Now Foods

Dextrose (also known as glucose) is a simple sugar (monosaccharide) that is the primary source of energy for the body.* Dextrose is approximately 25% less sweet than pure or refined cane sugar, and is not associated with either fructose or lactose. It has a fine texture, mixes easily, and is moderately sweet these traits make it extremely versatile. In addition, as a monosaccharide, Dextrose is easily absorbed and utilized by the body; it has a high glycemic index (GI) rating which indicates that it enters the bloodstream very quickly and is well-tolerated by most individuals with normal blood sugar responses.* Dextrose stimulates the body to drive, not only glucose, but amino acids and other nutrients into cells.* Dextrose thus makes energy readily available to working muscles and helps to maintain glycogen stores.* In addition, Dextrose also helps to make important nutrients, such as creatine and branched-chain aminos, available for use by muscle tissue.* From an athletic performance perspective therefore, it can help fuel intense activity, maintain exercise endurance, and support recovery from exercise.* Dextrose can be consumed before, during, and after the most intense training sessions. NOW Dextrose is derived from Non-GMO corn and manufactured under NOW's strict quality standards. Natural color variation may occur in this product. This product is sold by weight not volume. Nima - A Portable Gluten Tester - Nima

I am a gastroenterology physician and have celiac disease. Being a GI physician I treat patients with celiac disease as well. This is my personal testament that Nima works! And it works really well. My health is so much better. Ive used the first generation Nima device for gluten and it's a wonderful device. My daughter has Celiac disease and the Nima has saved us several times at restaurants. This product is a lifesaver for those of us with Celiac disease. It's portable, easy to use, and ... the only consumer tool out there. Since buying my Nima I have found gluten lurking everywhere from chili powder to Thai curry to coffee. The Nima sensor has given my daughter the confidence to eat food she is unsure about. She carries it with her to school and it is simple enough for her to use by herself. Can't say enough good things about it. I have Celiacs and travel frequently and the Nima Sensor gives me the confidence to eat out [] No more worrying about cross contamination ruining my trips - I am so grateful for the science and technology. Acute Effect Of Red Meat And Dairy On Glucose And Insulin: A Randomized Crossoverstudy.

1. Am J Clin Nutr. 2016 Jan;103(1):71-6. doi: 10.3945/ajcn.115.123505. Epub 2015 Dec16. Acute effect of red meat and dairy on glucose and insulin: a randomized crossoverstudy. Turner KM(1), Keogh JB(1), Clifton PM(2). (1)School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences, University of South Australia, Adelaide, Australia. (2)School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences, University of South Australia, Adelaide, Australia [email protected] BACKGROUND: In contrast with some epidemiologic evidence, our previous researchshowed that a 4-wk diet that was high in low-fat dairy reduced insulinsensitivity compared with the effect of a diet that was high in red meat.OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether a dairy meal would produce a greater insulinresponse than a carbohydrate-matched red meat meal would, which might account forthe change in insulin sensitivity.DESIGN: One meal contained lean red meat, bread, and orange juice, and the other meal contained skim milk, low-fat yogurt, cheese, and bread. Meals wereisoenergetic, equal in macronutrient profile, and consumed 1 wk apart. Glucose, insulin, and triglycerides were measured before and 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180min after meal consumption. Differences between meals were tested with the use ofa repeated-measures ANOVA and paired sample t tests.RESULTS: Nineteen men and 24 women [mean SD age: 50.8 16.0 y; body mass index(in kg/m(2)): 30.0 3.5] completed the study. Twenty-two participants had normalglucose tolerance, and 21 participants had impaired fasting glucose or impairedglucose tolerance. The red meat meal resulted in a higher glucose response at 30 min after consumption (P < 0.001); however, the glucose total AUC was notdifferent between meals (P = NS). The mean SEM incremental AUC (iAUC) forglucose was significantly higher after Continue reading >>

Should you take exogenous ketones made with beta-hydroxybutyrate? These keto powder supplements have become popular, but are they effective? I’ve been reluctant to try the popular ketone supplements as a few big ones are sold through MLM companies. However, you can buy a similar product by Perfect Keto which offers the same beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) ketone bodies without the MLM sales structure. And, if you use this link to purchase, you’ll get 20% off! When your body goes into ketosis, ketone bodies are created. These are known as endogenous ketones because they are produced internally. And, there’s known benefits when you put your body into a state of ketosis. In contrast, exogenous ketones are BHB salts that are available as supplements. The idea is that you can get some of the benefits of ketone bodies like increased energy without following a strict keto diet. When you take a ketone supplement, it’s not the same as putting your body into ketosis by restricting carbohydrates. So, what’s the benefit of taking the keto powder? Using exogenous ketones may decrease appetite, boost energy, and increase athletic performance. They may also be beneficial for preventing cancer, improving brain health, reducing blood glucose and inflammation. After consuming the Perfect Keto beta-hydroxybutyrate keto powder supplements, I did notice I had more energy and focus. I also experienced a slight reduction in appetite. Kee Continue reading >>

This Sweetener Is Far Worse Than High Fructose Corn Syrup

This Sweetener Is Far Worse Than High Fructose Corn Syrup

Many people interested in staying healthy have switched to agave as a safer “natural” sweetener. They want to avoid well documented dangerous sweeteners like HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) but are unaware that most agave is actually WORSE than HFCS. This expose will offend many hard core natural health advocates because they have been convinced of the agave hype by companies that are promoting it. Some have even criticized me for having “ulterior” motives. But nothing could be further from the truth. Although I do offer natural health products for sale on this site, I sell no competing products to agave. Rather, I recommend other options such as stevia products. You can also use xylitol in small amounts or glucose which is sold as dextrose and can easily be purchased on Amazon for $1 per pound. I do not sell any of these products. My only purpose for sharing this information is to help people understand the truth about health. In case you haven’t noticed, we have an epidemic of obesity in the US and it wasn’t until recently that my eyes opened up to the primary cause - - fructose. I had similar epiphanies about omega-3 fats and vitamin D since I started this site, but this is the most major health appreciation I have had since I learned about vitamin D over five years ago. This is serious business and it is my intention to make the public fully aware of it and let you make your own choices. Yes it is all about freedom of choice. It is hard to have freedom if you aren’t given the entire story, and up until now that has been the case with agave. So Just What is Agave? Blue agave is an exotic plant growing in the rich volcanic soil of Mexico under a hot tropical sun, boasting a stately flower stem that blooms only once in its lifetime. “Agave” literally Continue reading >>

IS YOUR SPORTS DRINK MAKING YOU FAT, TIRED AND DEHYDRATED? When you think of sports drinks, you think about hydration and performance.Lean, fit, and energized. Well, there are two problems with sports drinks that can actually make you gain weight, LOSE energy, and actually dehydrate you. Sugar and maltodextrin. Most sports drinks are loaded with both. One serving of Gatorade has 36 grams of sugar. Thats equal to 9 teaspoons of sugar! Most sports drinks also include maltodextrin, a carb that can interfere with the burning of fat. This even makes you pack on more weight instead of losing it. Sugar and maltodextrin dehydrate your body. They deplete important minerals like potassium and magnesium, making you tired and listless. My Experience With Exogenous Ketones

My Experience With Exogenous Ketones

Theory to anecdote: I decided to find out for myself if ketones could, indeed, offer up the same amount of usable energy with less oxygen consumption. I wrote this post at about the same time Germany won the World Cup in Rio de Janeiro in 2014 . Theres been a lot of moving and shaking in the world of exogenous ketones since then, not to mention soccer. Looking back on my post, I still consider it relevant in terms of what exogenous ketones possibly can (and cannot) do for performance. In this case, to see if exogenous ketone esters provide me a boost by allowing me to do the same amount of work while expending less energy (and work at a relatively lower VO2) compared to no supplementation. Im getting an increasing number of questions about exogenous ketones. Are they good? Do they work for performance? Is there a dose-response curve? If Im fasting, can I consume them without breaking the fast? Am I in ketosis if my liver isnt producing ketones, but my BOHB is 1.5 mmol/L after ingesting ketones? Can they ramp-up ketogenesis? Are they a smart drug? What happens if someone has high levels of both glucose and ketones? Are some products better than others? Salts vs esters? BHB vs AcAc? Can taking exogenous ketones reduce endogenous production on a ketogenic diet? Whats the difference between racemic mixtures, D-form, and L-form? Whats your experience with MCTs and C8? Caveat emptor: the following post doesnt come close to answering most of these questions. I only document my experience with BHB salts (and a non-commercial version at that), but say little to nothing about my experience with BHB esters or AcAc esters. But it will provide you will some context and understanding about what exogenous ketones are, and what they might do for athletic performance. Well likely podca Continue reading >>

Here is a description of the difference. Looks like dried glucose syrup is a combination of dextrin, maltose and glucose, whereas dextrose is simply dextrose monohydrate. Thanks Kerry - neat link as well (will have to bookmark that one) I think you can take a chance and use the powder regardless of whether it's glucose or dextrose. My feeling is that the increase of 25% of sweetening power or decrease of 3% of solid content of approximately 4% of your recipe won't really harm things. I am all about the science of it all, but at the end of the day, the "ideal" sweetening power and solid content are a range, so there's a good chance it will fall in it if it's dextrose instead of glucose powder. I think as long as the rest of the recipe is well balanced and the base is made properly, you shouldn't have a problem. Just my 2c.
