There's no point in testing if the information you get doesn't help you manage your diabetes. If you've been told to test at certain times, but you don't know why or what to do with the test results, then testing won't seem very meaningful. Here are some general guidelines for deciding how often to test: If you can only test once a day, then do it before breakfast. Keep a written record so that you can see the pattern of the numbers. If you control your blood sugar by diet and exercise only, this once-a-day test might be enough. The aim of diabetes treatment is to bring blood sugar (“glucose”) as close to normal as possible. What is a normal blood sugar level? And how can you achieve normal blood sugar? First, what is the difference between “sugar” and “glucose”? Sugar is the general name for sweet carbohydrates that dissolve in water. “Carbohydrate” means a food made only of carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen. There are various different kinds of sugars. The one our body uses most is called “glucose.” Other sugars we eat, like fructose from fruit or lactose from milk, are converted into glucose in our bodies. Then we can use them for energy. Our bodies also break down starches, which are sugars stuck together, into glucose. When people talk about “blood sugar,” they mean “blood glucose.” The two terms mean the same thing. In the U.S., blood sugar is normally measured in milligrams of glucose per deciliter of blood (mg/dl). A milligram is very little, about 0.00018 of a teaspoon. A deciliter is about 3 1/3 ounces. In Canada and the United Kingdom, blood sugar is reported in millimoles/liter (mmol/L). You can convert Canadian or British glucose levels to American numbers if you multiply them by 18. So my mother in law is a nurse and the other day she said the dr is having me check my sugars too soon and I'm not getting an accurate reading? I would think my dr knows what she's doing... mother in law said I need to be checking after 2 hours... and I know some of us do but some of us check after one hour. Idk what the big deal Is, she was like super concerned. I told her as long as I'm under 140 it's fine. Maybe it's to make sure I'm not spiking or somethin? Idk but I was irritated by her gettin all worked up over it lol. I do 1 hour <140. when I am high, if I check again at the two hour mark, its usually still high. So it doesn't seem to make a difference. The reason so many do 2 hours is because it accomodates for those on Insulin, which takes some time to have a full effect. I can do 1 or 2 hours. 1 is under 140 and 2 is under 120. I test whenever it's convenient, and note it when I submit to my doctor. I'm supposed to check 1 hr post meal. I did ask my Dr about whether it matters if I check 1 or 2 hr post meal. I told her that my 1 hr reading is usually higher but still below 140 and 2 hr is always below 120 (90-100). She then told me to give her my 1 hr post meal reading because she wants to check what my highest #s are after meal. Evidentially some foods take longer to make your sugar spike according to my dr that's why they asked for 2 hr post meal I was always told one hour but then when I was inpatient the nurses on antepartum were super confused because they always test two hours. I had to keep reminding them because it seemed so off to them. Some foods will make you spike in between the one hour and two hour mark. Pick an activity you enjoy. Always check with your doctor before starting any new exercise plans. Follow your meal plan. Take your medicines the way your health care provider recommends. Checking your blood sugar levels often and writing down the results will tell you how well you are managing your diabetes. If you have not been diagnosed with diabetes but suspect you might have something wrong with your blood sugar, there is a simple way to find out. What you need to do is to test your blood sugar after you have eaten a meal that contains about sixty grams of carbohydrates. You can ask your doctor to test your blood sugar in the office if you have an appointment that takes place an hour or two after you've eaten or, if this isn't an option, you can use an inexpensive blood sugar meter to test your post-meal blood sugar yourself at home. You do not need a prescription to buy the meter or strips. One advantage of testing yourself at home is that with self-testing you do not run the risk of having a "diabetes" diagnosis written into your medical records which might make it impossible for you to buy health or life insurance. To run a post-meal blood sugar test do following: Borrow a family member's meter or buy an inexpensive meter and strips at the drug store or Walmart. A: Most of the food you consume will be digested and raises blood glucose in one to two hours. To capture the peak level of your blood glucose, it is best to test one to two hours after you start eating. The American Diabetes Association recommends a target of below 180 mg/dl two hours after a meal. The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists recommends a lower target: below 140 mg/dl two hours after a meal. Ask your doctor which target is right for you. Postmeal blood glucose monitoring (and record-keeping) is important because it helps you see how your body responds to carbohydrates in general and particular foods. One Hour Blood Sugar Test Is Best Predictor Of Future Diabetes Risk
A study just published in the journal Diabetes Care confirms what I have suspected for a long time. The one test that gives the best indication of whether a person is in the process of developing diabetes is not the fasting glucose test used by 99% of family doctors. Nor is it the two hour value found on an oral glucose tolerance test--which has long been the gold standard endorsed by the American Diabetes Association. What best predicts diabetes in people who are in that middle ground of not normal but not frankly diabetic is the result seen on a blood sugar test taken one hour after a glucose challenge--i.e. after eating a significant amount of carbohydrate.
