Effect on Blood Sugar A study published in "The International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition" in 2009 found that consuming flaxseeds may help people with Type 2 diabetes lower their fasting blood sugar levels. However, another study, published in "The Journal of the American College of Nutrition" in February 2010, found that consuming the equivalent of 7.4 grams of the omega-3 fat alpha-linolenic acid from flaxseeds didn't improve blood sugar control in people with well-controlled diabetes. Flaxseed may be more beneficial in lowering blood sugar levels in people who have higher blood sugar levels. Potential Mechanisms Flaxseed may help decrease fasting blood sugar levels by lowering the glycemic index of the foods it's eaten with, according to a study published in "The Journal of Dietary Supplements" in September 2011. This means the flaxseed slows down the digestion of these foods so blood sugar is released more slowly into the bloodstream. The high fiber content of flaxseed could be the reason for these lower GI values. The antioxidants and lignans, plant chemicals that mimic estrogen, found in flaxseed may also help decrease insulin resistance in people with diabetes, helping them to control their blood sugar levels, according to a study published in "The Nutrition Journal" in 2011. I've been reading about flaxseed oil being good for type 2's and in a different article, should be avoided by diabetics on certain meds like Metformin. I am taking Met 2x a day at the maximum mg. I am confused by some articles saying it benefits diabetics and others say to avoid it. Which is right? According to the University of Maryland Medical Center's website, flaxseed can raise your bg levels if you are takng Met. But there are many people here who eat flaxseed and say that it actually helps their bg levels. I would experiment to see. Let us know how it works for you. There may be truth in what you say. I eat raw flaxseed (for its fats) many times during the day. If I overeat it a bit my BGs tend to rise even on an empty stomach. I was afraid of the responses. I just bought a huge bottle of flaxseed oil and now I don't think I'll even use it. I got my dh to take one this morning so maybe he'll take a shine to them. I do have flax seed so I guess I'll use thosemore often. I use ground flaxseed all the time to make all sorts of baked goods. I find I get very little bg spikes from flaxseed. Sometime it will actually push my bg down. Flaxseed is basically all fiber so it shouldn't affect bg. It does have fat like any seed so if you are sensitive to fat you may need to be careful. Drug companies hope to capitalize on the fact that the consumption of certain plants appears to lower the risk of diabetes by isolating these plants’ active components for use and sale as pharmacological agents. Though not as profitable, why don’t we just eat the plants themselves? One plant in particular that’s now been tested is flax. We’ve known for 20 years that having ground flax in your stomach can blunt the blood sugar spike from a meal, but it’s never been tested in diabetics–until now. World Health Organization researchers published an open-label study on the effect of flax seed powder supplementation in the management of diabetes. Diabetic subjects took a tablespoon of ground flax seeds every day for a month, and, compared to the control group, experienced a significant drop in fasting blood sugars, triglycerides, and cholesterol, as well as the most important thing, a drop in A1C level. If one’s sugars are already well controlled, though, there may be no additional benefit. How does flax help control blood sugars? Flaxseeds may improve insulin sensitivity in glucose intolerant people. After 12 weeks of flax, researchers found a small but significant drop in insulin resistance, perhaps related to the drop in oxidant stress due to the antioxidant qualities of flaxseeds. Join the community Hello, I'm mum to 3 boys and had gestational diabetes with all 3 pregnancies, so I've always been careful about what I ate and exercised at least 5 days a week however I was diagnosed with Endometriosis at 27 and put on hormone treatment. I went from 7st 4lbs (roughly) to 10st 7lbs in the space of about 3 months - new wardrobe but the plus side was I had quality of life and no pain (there was lots of pain). I was always concerned I couldn't lose weight (hormone treatment), and knew I could develop diabetes at some point, well that was on 23 Dec 2017. My long range blood results were 55 and I've been given Metformin 500g (I feel so much better!). As I already didn't eat wheat or cheese my culprits (bad foods) would be crisps (several packs a week), potatoes and a few squares of dark chocolate. So I drop potatoes (and crisps of course), carrots and dark chocolate but was surprised the Diabetes Nurse said to eat them - really? I'd swapped potatoes for cauliflower and given up the rest. Oh and I hardly ever drink. As Glucose Monitoring machines aren't given out anymore (madness in my opinion) I bought one the day after I was diagnosed. Every test for every meal has come back within range, until today where I had a 7.4 after I added Flaxseed to my normal breakfast. Normal breakfast is a pint of warm water with grated ginger and juice of half a lemon (drink). 1tbs of oats, 2tbs of natural yoghurt, a tiny squeeze of Agave syrup and approx 1tsp of ground almonds.
