Dario Smart Meter - Review
Disclaimer - I received a free Dario Smart Meter (along with 50 test strips) to use and review. Dario have not paid me for my opinion, nor have they had editorial rights over any of the content below. All views expressed here are my own. A couple of weeks ago, Dario got in touch and asked me if I'd be interested in reviewing their new Smart Meter. It's a device that effectively turns your smart phone into a blood glucose tester. Now if you're anything like me, you rarely go anywhere without your phone and BG testing kit so the idea of being able to combine the two (to a large extent) sounds appealing. Plus I think we're all allowed to get a little excited about new diabetes tech right? It's one of the few perks of putting up with Type 1 in my opinion. So just over a week ago, I got my hands on the kit and here's how I think it performs... The first thing to say is that it comes very well presented, as you can see below. I may have been a bit heavy handed opening the box, but I have a tendency to be like a kid at Christmas sometimes. The meter itself feels chunky, though I mean that in a good way. It feels like it can stand up to being carried around in your pocket or bag without falling apart. Mine has been carted pretty much everywhere with me over the last 10 days, and apart from being covered in fingerprints, it still looks brand new. The device is split into 3 main components. The orange section to the left houses the lancet. You pull back on the black slider to prime it, then hit the orange button on top to inflict the pain that we're all familiar with. The orange cap is secure without being too difficult to remove and there's a slider inside to allow you to vary the needle depth as is common to every lancet device I've ever seen. I left mine on the default lowest Continue reading >>

Review: My Dario Smartphone Glucose Meter
I was recently given a Dario Smartphone Glucose Meter and some test strips to try from my friends at Perth Diabetes Care. I squealed with excitement at the prospect of taking that little orange device home with me, because I tend to get pretty excited about integrating my diabetes tasks with my screentime. There was no expectation that I would blog about the Dario, and all opinions expressed here are my own. The Dario is a really nifty little device. I was surprised at Dario’s relatively low key launch into Australia, considering that many bloggers in the UK were given meters to try some time ago. If it weren’t for the odd sponsored post on Facebook or my perusing the Diabetes WA online shop, I wouldn’t have known it had hit our shores. So, it’s an all in one glucose meter. Lancing device at one end, test strip vials stored on the opposite end. For some crazy reason, I thought the whole device clipped onto the bottom of my smartphone. So there I was on the first night I brought it home, trying to attach the whole damn thing to my phone! Until I realised that only the little test strip port connects via the headphone jack. You also need to download the Dario app to your phone, and register to get started. I was able to register with my Facebook account, which is a big plus in my book – one less password to remember! Once you’ve opened the app and connected the little test strip port, you can insert a strip and receive a glucose reading on your phone screen. The Dario app also had features like a bolus calculator, food databases, data sharing and an estimated hba1c. The data entry screen shown below gave me plenty of time after testing to input carbs and calculate an insulin dose, so long as I didn’t press the tick to exit. I didn’t really make too much us Continue reading >>

Dario Smart Glucose Meter Review For Android And Apple
Dario Smart Glucose Meter Review for Android and Apple Posted by James Smythe | Aug 7, 2016 | Fitness , Reviews | 0 While I am not diabetic I used to be obese and now I am fit, I am also a gadget geek that love to track stats. My previous health choices have always made me a bit paranoid about diabetes but tests done by my GP have confirmed I am fine. I was still interested in reviewing the new all-in-one Dario glucose smart meter, though. I am still curious to see how my body reacts to various situations. For example, I still tend to eat very large meals, and I can suffer quite badly from postprandial dips at lunch time, and this seems particularly bad when I eat a lot of bread. I also follow intermittent fasting, so I generally only eat during an 8-hour window. For my personal purposes, a spent a few days testing my blood levels multiple times per day to get a better reading of how my blood sugar levels peak and trough throughout the day. As I am not diabetic, I dont have any other device to compare the results to, I will just assume they are accurate. The device itself is an all plastic multi-compartment type cartridge. It stores your test strips, the headphone jack device, and the lancet gun. This makes it very easy to carry around with you. It is easily small enough to fit in a pocket without creating too much of a bulge. As I havent used a device like this before, setting it up was a little confusing, I didnt find the instructions to be very clear. However, once I had worked it out, it seemed quite straightforward in hindsight. If you are familiar with glucose meters, it is probably a lot simpler. Once the device was set up everything else was very easy. The app was easy to download, install and sign up to. Performing the test will be exactly the same as any othe Continue reading >>

Product Review: Dario Blood Glucose Monitoring System
A new little meter is on the market, and I think it’s a pretty cool little device! It’s the new Dario Smart Meter from LabStyle Innovations. It has had CE approval since September 2013, but was just approved here in the US in December 2015, and hit the market in March of this year. It’s been about a month since I received the new Dario meter. This little meter system is not a new concept, but I feel it has solved a few problems maybe some other similar apps and devices have or have had while creating a few of its own. Features: Small, compact, all-in-one design (slightly larger than a lighter or lipgloss size). Compared to other meter kits on the market, this is the smallest one I’ve used. And since it is all-in-one, there are no separate parts to keep up with. It’s easy to handhold and doesn’t feel big or overly awkward to carry in your pocket. Compatible with iPhone and Android Dario App (iPhone only in the US currently though) The app is intuitive with basic logging features yet smart design, and syncs to the desktop application as well with a great use of colors for readings that are low, lower end of normal, normal, higher end of normal, or high rather than just three colors to differentiate low, within range, or high. Advantages: Its design allows the user to only have to carry the device as a whole: it carries the strips in a removable cartridge, the lancing device is built in, and the strip reader device is tucked into the side and snaps into place when not in use. Using it is simple and straightforward: open the app, plug the strip dongle into the phone’s headphone jack, insert a strip, apply blood and the result is seen within 6 seconds. A screen then pops up to show the BG value along with the ability to log any additional information such as in Continue reading >>

Accuracy Standards In Glucose Meters: Why Do Different Meters Read Different Results?
Our diabetes educator helps you understand your blood glucose meter. My patients frequently come to me with questions concerning their blood glucose testing equipment. A commonly asked question is “Why do my testing results vary meter to meter?” The answer simplified is that meters are tested for accuracy and must adhere to standards that prior to 2014 in the US, could vary by 20 percent and can now only vary by 15 percent. The variation allowance confused a lot of patients. This can be especially alarming when using a new product that doesn’t seem to “match up” to a blood glucose meter you have been using. The ISO, International Standards Organization, has guidelines that meter companies must meet. The FDA in the US follows these guidelines. Currently, all measured blood glucose meter values must be within 15 percent of the true lab value of blood glucose 95 percent of the time and within 20 percent of the lab value 99 percent of the time. The standards also go on to state that 95 percent of all test results be within 20 percent of test results greater than 75mg/dl and within 15mg/dl for values The standards also go on to state that 95 percent of all test results be within 20 percent of test results greater than 75mg/dl and within 15mg/dl for values below 75mg/dl (this additional criterion was set up for meters used in physician offices.) Although this can be confusing, a blood glucose value that is a lab value of 100mg/dl could conceivably show up on a meter as 80-120mg/dl and still be considered accurate. Fortunately, Dario has undergone considerable testing and meets and/or exceeds ISO standards by being within blank percent 99% of the time. What does this mean for you, the end user? This means that meters manufactured before the stricter ISO standards wer Continue reading >>

Dario Smart Meter Blood Glucose Review
The Dario Smart Meter's unique design is extremely compact and integrates directly with you smart phone allowing you to track and monitor your blood glucose, and much more, on your phone. The meter meets the 2013 ISO standards for blood glucose meter accuracy. The Dario Smart Phone certainly has its advantages but there are also some possible cons to consider too. The Darios smart phone integration means it is much easier to analyse data than most meters can offer. The Dario app charts every blood glucose test you take with the meter, allowing you to easily view your log and charts of your results. Additionally, the app lets you chart much more, including: A comprehensive list of tags, including your own notes The Dario app keeps tracks of your results, including how many highs and lows youre getting and even provides an HbA1c estimate from your blood glucose readings. The app also allows you to share your results with anyone you choose, such as your family or your doctor. The one main disadvantage of the Dario Smart Meter is that, should your phone run out of charge, you would be without the use of your Dario Smart Meter too. This means that you will need to ensure your phone is well charged when going out or that you bring your phones charger with you in case it does run out of charge at any point. Before blood glucose testing can begin, you need to download the Dario app which is available through mydario.com or from the Apple App Store or Google play. Once installed, you can then open the app on your phone and start testing. The meter itself is tiny and is released from the kit casing with the slide of a button. It is then connected to the phones headphone jack. When you put a test strip into the meter, the app will be ready for blood. At any time, you have the opt Continue reading >>

Review: Dario Glucose Meter
One of the things that happened after my lung transplant was that I became diabetic from the high amount of steroids they give us. Before I left the hospital I was taught to give myself glucose testing &injections for a blood thinner (Lovenox) that I had to give myself the first month after my transplant. I initially had to test my glucose 4 times a day &give myself a certain amount of insulin at meal times. Luckily, my steroids have decreased. I only have to test my glucose twice &give myself insulin if my blood sugar isover 150. I hated the meter the hospital pharmacy sent. It was a One Touch. I found that it didnt always read the first stick. Plus, I knew from experience it was going to be a lot of money for strips &lancets. As soon as I could I ditched that meterfor my Dario . The Dario uses my phone to plug the tester in &take the readings but it also records them through the app. I can pull them up easily for my doctors if needed. It also seems to take a smaller sample of blood to read. I have very few misfirings or failed to test readings from the strip. Much less than theOne Touch. This meter ismore convenient. The lancets &strips house themselves smartly. I carry one thing around with everything in it, except the lancets. Thesmall cosmetic pouch I use is still lower profile than the Ultra kit. The Dario will also fit in an evening bag or small handbag if necessary. I was pleasantly surprised too that I could actually save a bit of money on test strips & lancets. When I paid this money, I had a choice of prices based on how many supplies Id need in a month. I could also buy plastic bags to go around my phone to create a more hygienic way of testing in a hospital or doctors office. I dont feel as much pain with the Dario lancets compared with the Ultra. They get Continue reading >>

I have been extremely impressed with the Dario Smart Meter since I purchased mine some 2 years ago. The best and most convenient blood sugar monitor I have ever used. This week I had an issue with my Dario. I called and was immediately connected with Joe in the US, who took me through all the steps for troubleshooting, and when this didn't overcome the problem, suggested a couple more and to call again if the problem was not resolved. Still no success, so I called the help li...ne again and spoke with Andy, talked about the process I had been through, did a few more checks and he confirmed that I needed a replacement. Fantastic delivery service with a new Dario Smart Meter delivered with 48 hours. Huge thank you to Both Joe and Andy for their first class support Ive had my Dario for a couple of years now and even purchased a backup to keep in my locker at work. I love the ease of carrying it all in one tiny package. Im not currently on a subscription plan because after I learned what I could and couldnt eat, I stopped checking my BS 8x a day. In just 6 months after my diagnosis, I went from an 11.9 A1c down to 5.3. I know I cant attribute that to the glucometer, but I know I wouldnt have been as diligent about checking my blood... sugar if I had to use a system that didnt fit in my pocket. I have no complaints about the Dario, but I sure do with Apple. Taking away the headphone jack was the stupidest thing ever and Im very tempted to go Android. Ive lost several of the little dongle converters that I have to have to use my Dario. Ive never use it for headphones, only for my glucometer. I am wondering if either apple or Dario are working on any modifications to make this work easier with the later Apple models? My pre-teen daughter diagnosed 4 years started struggling t Continue reading >>

Dario Review | Top Ten Reviews
The Dario Blood Glucose Management System is a unique meter in the industry. It plugs into your smartphone's audio jack, turning your phone into a glucometer and data management tool without the hassle of pairing Bluetooth and syncing data. The Dario app is the interface for the glucometer and the data management system. In many ways, this glucometer feels like its ahead of the curve, which is why it's our pick for the best glucometer for data management. The Dario received an A- grade in my small-scale accuracy test. To arrive at this grade, I tested my blood with each glucometer multiple times a day for three weeks. It's important to note that the results of my tests dont negate the validity of a meters FDA approval. The FDA requires all glucometers sold in the U.S. be within 15 percent of true glucose levels 95 percent of the time, and each model goes through rigorous, large-scale testing to prove it is capable. That said, I still wanted to gauge how consistent the glucometers are in a small-scale comparison. In every round of testing, the glucose meters should all produce similar readings, so I tested all 11 at the same time on the same blood sample, then averaged the results. I then calculated a range, with the minimum set at 15 percent below the average for that round and the maximum at 15 percent above the average, and I noted when glucometers fell outside its limits. The tests showed the Dario was among the most consistent glucometers, with only a few readings that fell outside of the acceptable range. Most glucometers come with a bulky, flimsy soft case, but the Dario comes in a small plastic container thats the size of most glucose meters. The container holds test strips in one end and a spring-loaded lancet on the other. The middle contains the meter that pl Continue reading >>

Dario Blood Glucose Meter Review
Diabetes, a condition where blood sugar levels are increased, is a disease that affects many people across the world. In fact, a recent study (2015) showed that nearly 50% of adults living in the U.S. have diabetes or pre-diabetes. Dario, a company made up of tech engineers, medical advisors and people from the diabetes community, are hoping tomake diabetes sufferers lives a little easier to manage with their All-in-One Smart Glucose Meter. The smart meter is a sleek and portable monitoring solution that features a lancing device, test strip cartridge holder, and a smart phone attachment. The device has no need for batteries, due to the smart phone attachment just needing to be plugged in to the headphone jack, can offer rapid blood glucose readings within 6 seconds of testing, and meets ISO standards of accuracy with just a tiny sample of blood. For those of you looking to upgrade to the iPhone 7 fear not. Dario are already prepping for the lack of a headphone jack on the recently updatediPhone, and will be releasing an Apple Lightning connector version soon. Within the box youll receive the glucose meter and a small bag of 25 lancing devices. If youre in the US, the test strips are available separately on a purchase plan, which comes in plans of 50 strips, 100 strips or 200 strips per month. For those of you in the UK there isnt such a plan in place, but you may beable to get lancets and test strips on prescription from your local pharmacy. If a prescription isnt ideal for you then a box of 50 strips can be purchased for 14.95 (excluding VAT) . Whilst handling the device youll probably notice, as I did, that the caps at the ends which are covering both the lancet (orange) and the test strips holder (white) are very secure without being too difficult to remove. My onl Continue reading >>

Dario Blood Glucose Meter Review – Daniele Hargenrader, Diabetes Dominator
I was excited by the concept when I bought one for trial immediately they became available in Australia in 2015. I contacted the company following some earlier difficulties with my Dario; eventually they replaced it. Recently I was asked by the company rep for feedback. I sent them a copy of a reply I posted to a person excited by the meter on reddit. As I mentioned to that person I’m not as enthused as you are. Below is a copy of that report, followed by their response: I have been lax in posting my report on Dario. I’m not quite as enthused as you are. Possibly you can give me feedback on the points I miss. The first problem was compatibility with my phone. It worked initially, during which time I did the testing which led to the first report below. Then I had a lot of problems getting it to communicate with my Samsung galaxy S4. It took many emails to convince the company rep in Australia to send a replacement. I posted this initial report to them based on those earlier tests: * Small, lightweight and compact, a major improvement in that respect over other testing systems. * The lancet lid arrangement is awkward. When changing depth setting or lancets it is too easy to catch the thumb on the installed lancet as the cap is flicked off. * Damp fingers after washing in readiness for the test made it difficult to load the lancet device. I learned to slide it back just enough to get a thumbnail over the end of the slider for extra purchase. Possibly adding some roughness to the smooth plastic sides of the sliding section would be an improvement. * The inner cap on the strips container section is redundant and adds an unnecessary extra step to the testing process. The outer cap was sometimes quite difficult to get off. * Both end caps would be better if hinged for rete Continue reading >>
