Test Driving Ascensia's New Contour Next One Meter

Test Driving Ascensia's New Contour Next One Meter

It's often the little details that translate to the biggest benefits when it comes to taking care of your diabetes. That was top of mind for me after trying out the new Ascensia Contour Next ONE meter, the latest in the line of Contour meters from the company formerly known as Bayer. Approved by the FDA in November 2016, this Contour Next ONE meter sports a next-generation design with subtle differences from its predecessors, and it's the first app-enabled meter Ascensia has brought our way in the Contour line. I must say, I'm impressed with Ascensia of late, for what they've produced and the innovations in their pipeline that include partnering with Glooko for better data-sharing access on multiple platforms. Let's dig into this new meter itself... Meeting the New Contour Next ONE The new Next ONE model is an upgrade of the Contour Next USB meter, which was discontinued as of Dec. 31, 2016. I'd been using that meter for several years, including a version that links wirelessly to my former Medtronic insulin pump. I've loved the meter for its finger-sized portability, and now that I'm disconnected from an insulin pump and on Multiple Daily Dosing instead, I no longer need the linking capability. Fortunately, my test strip supply is fully stocked and this new meter uses the same Contour Next test strips, so it doesn't require a new prescription, making for an easy transition. Sleeker, Slimmer: While the form factor is mostly unchanged, it is a bit thinner and sleeker in design. The earlier generation Contour Next meter had a button on the top side of the meter to turn it on and off, plus three buttons on the meter face allowing you to select and scroll through meter menus. Now, the Contour Next ONE has eliminated all of those buttons except for a single round circle 'OK' Continue reading >>

Editor's Note: This review has been removed from our side-by-side comparison because it no longer ranks as a top 10 product. The original review is below, but check out our current Glucometer Reviews here. The Bayer Contour Next EZ meter is a glucometer that is quick to set up and start using. Known for its simplicity and ease of use, it's a good choice for anyone new to testing or those who don't need a lot of extra features. A personal hi/low range setting lets you customize the Contour Next EZ meter to fit your specific needs. It accurately tests blood glucose levels between 20 and 600 mg/dL, but you can program in your typical upper and lower levels to help you quickly spot trends before problems develop. The Contour Next EZ offers rapid test results of five seconds or less with a high degree of accuracy. The process starts with innovative test strips that utilize proprietary Sip-In sampling to absorb the necessary 0.6 microliters of blood to ensure accurate results on the first try. This blood glucose monitor then uses Bayer's Multipulse technology to evaluate the sample. This process repeats the evaluation of the blood sample six to seven times to ensure a more accurate reading. Most blood sugar meters lose accuracy or stop working altogether at altitudes of 10,000 feet or higher, but this one continues to give accurate readings up to an altitude of 20,650 feet. It does have temperature limitations and will not work properly when the temperature is 40 degrees F or less. The Contour Next EZ meter isn't the smallest unit on the market, but at 3.03 x 2.24 x 0.74 inches, it's not considered large either, and it weighs just 1.7 ounces with the two CR2032 batteries installed. This no-frills glucometer has a black-and-white display that may not be as easy to read as som Continue reading >>

Very easy to use and provides fast, accurate results!Very reliable and shows results in large numbers! It seems like it is made well. However, I compare the readings with two other One Touch Ultra meters. They both read with 3 points of each other and the Bayer read 18 points lower. I reapeated the same test 3 times with similar results. When I go for blood tests I'll take a ready and compare it to the labs and the One touch Ultra's readings are very close to the labs. I don't have any confidence in the readings of the EZ Meterso I give it a one star. I was recently diagnosed with gestational diabetes and was informed I needed to purchase a monitor. Bayer Contour Vs. Contour Next Glucose Test Strips

Bayer Contour Vs. Contour Next Glucose Test Strips

Bayer Contour and Contour NEXT blood glucose test strips are manufactured by Bayer. Contour test strips are widely used in United States and around the world for their great features. Bayer Contour glucose monitoring systems are highly popular here in the U.S because they are affordable, easy-to-use, and clinically accurate. Moreover, in a study conducted by J.D Power in 2014 Bayer was ranked highest by consumers for blood glucose meter satisfaction. Bayer Contour and Contour NEXT glucose monitoring systems share similar features such as the No Coding Technology. Despite the common similarities, there are some differences. You can safely assume that Contour NEXT is the next generation of Contour glucose monitoring system. In fact, Bayer is now encouraging users to upgrade to Contour NEXT for highly accurate results. One major difference between the 2 systems is the test strips. Bayer Contour glucose meters use Contour test strips whereas Contour NEXT glucose meters use Contour NEXT test strips. Much like the meters, these test strips share some similarities and dissimilarities. For the most part, they are fairly identical. It is very common for Bayer users to ask “what’s the difference between Bayer Contour and Bayer Contour NEXT glucose test strips?” In fact, our customers often ask us the same question. Which one should I use? Are Contour NEXT test strips better than Contour test strips? What’s the Difference Between Contour and Contour NEXT test strips? Review: Ascensia’s New Contour Next One Bluetooth Glucose Meter

Review: Ascensia’s New Contour Next One Bluetooth Glucose Meter

When I first heard of Ascensia’s new CONTOUR NEXT ONE Bluetooth glucose meter, I was ecstatic! I have loved the Contour line for several years now due to it’s amazing accuracy. We were contacted last year when it received the CE Mark of approval, and we recently shared the news of it’s approval here in the US. Ascensia offered to send us a meter to review, and I gladly accepted. It came with the meter, 100 test strips, a brand-new Microlet Next lancet device, and enough lancets to last a lifetime! (Okay, not a lifetime, but 100 to match the 100 strips.) They also sent along some brochures and a quick-start sheet to help guide me along with setting up the meter and app. Let’s dive in, shall we? The CONTOUR NEXT ONE Meter First, this CONTOUR NEXT ONE meter is Ascensia’s upgrade to the Contour Next USB meter, which they’ve now discontinued as of December 31st. Next, it uses the same strips as the USB and Medtronic USB models, so you don’t have to get a new prescription to use it. There’s also now a 60-second re-application window instead of 30-seconds like before. What this means is that if you apply a sample that’s too small, you now have a full minute to re-poke and apply more blood to the strip to get a test, in hopes that you won’t have to waste a strip! They’ve now taken away the USB connector (meaning you cannot plug it in directly to the computer), and have replaced it with a micro-USB port. Since this meter runs on batteries, there’s no need for charging, so the need to connect it may not be as often, if ever (unless you use another diabetes data software other than the new Contour app). They’ve also upgraded (and downgraded?) the screen from the color OLED to the basic black-and-white LED with segments and icons. No longer do the numbers Continue reading >>

Accuracy Evaluation Of Five Blood Glucose Monitoring Systems: The North American Comparator Trial

Accuracy Evaluation Of Five Blood Glucose Monitoring Systems: The North American Comparator Trial

Go to: Abstract This study evaluated differences in accuracy between the CONTOUR® NEXT EZ (EZ) blood glucose monitoring system (BGMS) and four other BGMSs [ACCU-CHEK® Aviva (ACAP), FreeStyle Freedom Lite® (FFL), ONE TOUCH® Ultra®2 (OTU2), and TRUEtrack® (TT)]. Methods Up to three capillary blood samples (N = 393) were collected from 146 subjects with and without diabetes. One sample per subject was tested with fresh (natural) blood; the other samples were glycolyzed to lower blood glucose to <70 mg/dl. Meter results were compared with results from plasma from the same sample tested on a Yellow Springs Instruments (YSI) 2300 STAT Plus™ glucose analyzer. Blood glucose monitoring system accuracy was compared using mean absolute relative difference (MARD; from laboratory reference method results) and other analyses. Separate analyses on fresh (natural) samples only were conducted to determine potential effects of glycolysis on MARD values of systems utilizing glucose-oxidase-based test strip chemistry. Across the tested glucose range, the EZ had the lowest MARD of 4.7%; the ACAP, FFL, OTU2, and TT had MARD values of 6.3%, 18.3%, 23.4%, and 26.2%, respectively. For samples with glucose concentrations <70 mg/dl, the EZ had the lowest MARD (0.65%), compared with the ACAP (2.5%), FFL (18.3%), OTU2 (22.4%), and TT (33.2%) systems. The EZ had the lowest MARD across the tested glucose ranges when compared with four other BGMSs when all samples were analyzed as well as when natural samples only were analyzed. Accuracy And User Performance Evaluation Of The Contour® Next Link 2.4 Blood Glucose Monitoring System

Accuracy And User Performance Evaluation Of The Contour® Next Link 2.4 Blood Glucose Monitoring System

Abstract The Contour® Next Link 2.4 blood glucose monitoring system (BGMS), which communicates wirelessly exclusively with a Medtronic insulin pump, was assessed in 2 separate studies. In the laboratory study (N = 100), subject capillary fingertip samples were tested in duplicate using 3 test strip lots; accuracy was assessed based on ISO 15197:2013 section 6.3 accuracy criteria (95% within ± 15 mg/dl or ± 15% of reference for glucose < 100 and ≥ 100 mg/dl, respectively). In the clinical trial (N = 219), untrained subjects with diabetes tested capillary fingertip and palm blood samples and completed an ease-of-use questionnaire. BGMS and YSI glucose analyzer results were compared based on ISO 15197:2013 section 8 accuracy criteria. In the laboratory study, 100% of results met ISO 15197:2013 section 6.3 accuracy criteria. In the clinical trial, 98.6% of capillary fingertip and 97.2% of palm results from subjects met ISO 15197:2013 section 8 accuracy criteria. By Parkes-Consensus Error Grid analysis, 100% of subject capillary fingertip results were within Zone A. Based on questionnaire results, the majority of subjects found the BGMS easy to use. The BGMS exceeds ISO 15197:2013 section 6.3 and section 8 accuracy criteria in the laboratory and in the hands of untrained users with diabetes. Continue reading >>
