Keep in mind that, while studies may show a connection, there is no firm proof that shows either asthma or diabetes to be a direct cause of the other. The first study was published in the Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Here, we will present a shortened summary based on an article found on Reuters.com In this study, researchers looked at 2,000 3- to 21-year-olds with diabetes. They found that 11 percent had asthma. This is higher than the roughly 9 percent rate among all people in the U.S. within that age range. When the researchers looked just at a group that has type 2 diabetes, a full 16 percent had asthma. There were two main findings from this study: Kids with diabetes may have a higher-than-average rate of asthma. Those with both conditions seem to have a tougher time keeping their blood sugar under control. The study found no firm reason why children with both conditions have a harder time keeping blood sugar controlled. But the researchers have two possible ideas. "The association between asthma and type 1 diabetes is more complex than we previously thought," explained lead author Johanna Metsl, PhD, an epidemiologist at the National Institute for Health and Welfare, Helsinki, Finland. Study Looks at Link Between Asthma and Type 1 Diabetes Finnish researchers acknowledged that the associations between asthma and type 1 diabetes are still unclear so they conducted a study to look more into the link between these two immune-mediated conditions. In their study abstract they state that they conducted a nationwide case-cohort study with Finnish children and used a novel statistical approach. The children in the study were born between January 1st 1981 and December 31st 2008. There were 81,473 diagnosed with asthma and 9,541 diagnosed with type 1 diabetes up to age 16 by the end of 2009. This data was located in the Central Drug Register that the Social Insurance Institution of Finland keeps. Regarding the new statistical approach, researchers used a multistate modelling approach to estimate transition rates between healthy and disease states since birth. Hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to represent the change in the transition rate between the disease states.They adjusted for sex and birth decade. What are the Ties Between Type 1 and Asthma? The researchers found that a previous asthma diagnosis raised the risk of developing type 1 diabetes by a whopping 41%. We excluded patients taking other medications than antidiabetics, with familial history of asthma or other illness, and patients with any allergic risk factors. According to the study, nearly 11 percent of almost 2,000 children and young adults under age 21 with diabetes also had asthma. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 9 percent of children and young adults in the country have asthma. What the study also found was that children who suffered the double whammy of both diabetes and asthma had a tougher time controlling their blood sugar levels than the children who had only diabetes, 15.5 percent to 9 percent. Susan McQuade, respiratory therapist at Hendrick Medical Center stated that, children who have both diseases have more things to remember to do or not do and to monitor, no easy tasks for children or their parents. McQuade said, however, shes not sure exactly how the two conditions, along with obesity, are linked. Both diabetes and asthma are inflammatory, but for a long time we didnt think they were related, she said. Even though this study shows a link, there still needs to be further research. We examined this association in a large, nationwide case-cohort study among Finnish children, using a novel statistical approach. Among the initial cohort of all children born between 1 January 1981 and 31 December 2008, those who were diagnosed with asthma (n = 81 473) or type 1 diabetes (n = 9541) up to age 16 years by the end of 2009 were identified from the Central Drug Register maintained by the Social Insurance Institution of Finland. A 10% random sample from each initial birth year cohort was selected as a reference cohort (n = 171 138). The association between asthma and type 1 diabetes was studied using a multistate modelling approach to estimate transition rates between healthy and disease states since birth. Hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to represent the change in the transition rate between the disease states. What researchers have not been clear on is the strength of the relationship and whether asthma makes it more likely to develop diabetes or vice versa. Scientists at the National Institute for Health and Welfare in Finland have now helped to clarify the relationship between type-1 diabetes and asthma. Rather than a simple link where the presence of one condition increases the likelihood of the other, the link between diabetes and asthma is apparently more complicated. Whereas having asthma increased the risk for type-1 diabetes by about 41% in the subjects studied, having type-1 diabetes actually decreased the risk of developing asthma. The magnitude of the reduced risk for asthma was about 18%. The researchers investigated health records from 171,138 children who were born between 1981 and 2008. From this sample, which represented 10% of the Finnish population born in that time frame, the researchers identified 80,871 children who were diagnosed with asthma and 8,939 with type-1diabetes by the age of 16. Both conditions were present in 602 of these children. The purchase of insulin and anti-asthmatic drugs helped researchers determine childrens diagnoses. The reason why asthma might complicate pediatric diabetes care remains unclear, however, and is "something that needs to be explored more," said Dr. Anita Swamy, a pediatric endocrinologist and medical director of the Chicago Children's Diabetes Center at La Rabida Children's Hospital in Chicago. She was not involved in the new study, which appears in the October issue of Pediatrics. About 215,000 children in the United States have diabetes, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most children who have diabetes have type 1 diabetes, although type 2 diabetes is becoming more prevalent in kids. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that causes the body to mistakenly attack the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Insulin is a hormone that helps the body process carbohydrates in food. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body doesn't produce enough insulin, or when it stops using insulin effectively, according to the American Diabetes Association. Asthma is a chronic disease that causes inflammation in the airways, and when someone with asthma is exposed to a trigger, the disease causes the muscles in the lungs to tighten, making breathing very difficult. You are taking numerous medications, and it may be possible to reduce them somewhat. Id say it is time for a physician to re-evaluate you to see if there is any redundancy in the types of medications you are taking. Adjustments can then be made accordingly. Also, there may be an allergic component to your disease. Skin testing or a RAST blood test as well a check of your IgE level, should be done to see if you are a candidate for Xolair (omalizumab), a new treatment for allergic asthma.
