10 Signs And Symptoms That You're In Ketosis

The ketogenic diet is a popular, effective way to lose weight and improve health. When followed correctly, this low-carb, high-fat diet will raise blood ketone levels. These provide a new fuel source for your cells, and cause most of the unique health benefits of this diet (1, 2, 3). On a ketogenic diet, your body undergoes many biological adaptions, including a reduction in insulin and increased fat breakdown. When this happens, your liver starts producing large amounts of ketones to supply energy for your brain. However, it can often be hard to know whether you're "in ketosis" or not. So what happens during cardio when you're in ketosis?

    1 Answer

One of the best answers to this can be found if you Google Peter Attia's presentations that give an awesome summary on the subject.
Generally speaking, if you are healthy (not Type 1 diabetic), the energy in your mitochondria is generated from ketone bodies that get converted into Acetyl CoA and enter the Krebs cycle, as opposed to when Acetyl CoA is generated from pyruvate (a byproduct of anaerobic glucose metabolism).
Ketone bodies are a "cleaner" and a more stable fuel for cardio/endurance exercise (no "bonking" or blood glucose/insuline fluctuations that come from traditional carb-refeeding).

Ketone bodies typically, then, come as a byproduct of body fat metabolism. Essentially, you just ecome a "fat-burning machine", when you exercise in the state of ketosis.
