The Keto Diet Is Gaining Popularity, But Is It Safe?

A new twist on extreme weight loss is catching on in some parts of the United States. It’s called the "keto diet." People promoting the diet say it uses the body’s own fat burning system to help people lose significant weight in as little as 10 days. It has also been known to help moderate the symptoms of children with epilepsy, although experts are not quite sure why it works. Proponents say the diet can produce quick weight loss and provide a person with more energy. However, critics say the diet is an unhealthy way to lose weight and in some instances it can be downright dangerous. Read More: What is the “Caveman Diet?” » What Is Ketosis? The “keto” diet is any extremely low- or no-carbohydrate diet that forces the body into a state of ketosis. Ketosis occurs when people eat a low- or no-carb diet and molecules called ketones build up in their bloodstream. Low carbohydrate levels cause blood sugar levels to drop and the body begins breaking down fat to use as energy. Ketosis is actually a mild form of ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis mostly affects people with type 1 diabetes. In fact, it is the leading cause of death of people with diabetes who are under 24 years of age. Continue reading >>

I thought i would share an update since i figured others might suffer from the same thing. i posted a while back that i had a lot of hairloss after starting keto, well actually three months after i started. I lost the largest chunck of weight in the first months and the hairloss was probably related to that rather than my diet itself.
I went to see a trichologist who told me that i did have enough new growth. She said it was most likely telogen effluvium, which means that all your hair decides to fall out instead of the normal 100 a day. It can happen when your body goes through stress or hormonal changes.
My hairloss started in November 2015 and i am happy to say that as of the beginning of this month it has stopped. I washed my hair today and only had like 10 hairs that came out.
What does my hair look like atm? It is thin as fuck. My hair had always been very thick and kinda awesome. It was long and healthy because i had let it grow out without colouring it for seven flipping years. The amount of hair that was coming out left me no choice but to cut it, it is now shoulder length. I can still make it look thicker than it is and I don't have any bald spots. But honestly, I do mourn my hair every once in a while. On the flip side i am no longer obese nor insuline resistant. :-)

The same thing happened to me! Went from 255lbs to 180 lbs from October to January and my already thin hair started falling out in clumps. My husband was worried sick and I actually dropped keto and it helped. I need to get back to it but my hair is still so thin, I'm afraid I'll be bald.

I started keto and was very strict; about 3 months later I started losing tons of hair. The hair loss was pretty evenly spread out. I was really anxious about how much I'd lost. I did check my labs, including an iron panel - all basically normal. It continued for about 4-6 weeks and then basically stopped. Roughly 6 months later it was completely back to normal. I noticed it coming back slowly even though I didn't really change my eating habits. I haven't had a problem since.
