Point-of-care testing (POCT), or bedside testing is defined as medical diagnostic testing at or near the point of care—that is, at the time and place of patient care. This contrasts with the historical pattern in which testing was wholly or mostly confined to the medical laboratory, which entailed sending off specimens away from the point of care and then waiting hours or days to learn the results, during which time care must continue without the desired information. Point-of-care tests are simple medical tests that can be performed at the bedside. In many cases the simplicity was not achievable until technology developed not only to make a test possible at all but then also to mask its complexity. For example, various kinds of urine test strips have been available for decades, but portable ultrasonography did not reach the stage of being advanced, affordable, and widespread until the 2000s and 2010s. Today portable US is often viewed as a "simple" test, but there was nothing simple about it until the more complex technology was available. Similarly, pulse oximetry can test arterial oxygen saturation in a quick, simple, noninvasive, affordable way today, but in earlier eras this required an intraarterial needle puncture and a laboratory test; and rapid diagnostic tests such as malaria antigen detection tests rely on a state of the art in immunology that did not exist until recent decades. Thus, over decades, testing continues to move toward the point of care more than it formerly had been. A recent survey in five countries (Australia, Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK and the US) indicates that general practitioners / family doctors would like to use more POCTs. The driving notion behind POCT is to bring the test conveniently and immediately to the patient. This increases the likelihood that the patient, physician, and care team will receive the results quicker, which allows for better immediate clinical management decisions to be made. POCT includes: blood glucose testing, blood gas and electrolytes analysis, rapid coagulation testing (PT/INR, Alere, Microvisk Ltd), rapid cardiac markers diagnostics (TRIAGE, Alere), drugs of abuse screening, urine strips testing, pregnancy testing, fecal occult blood analysis, food pathogens screening, hemoglobin diagnostics (HemoCue), infectious disease testing and cholesterol screening. POCT is often accomplished through the use of transportable, portable, and handheld instruments (e.g., blood glucose meter, nerve conduction study device) and test kits (e.g., CRP, HBA1C, Homocystein, HIV salivary assay, etc.). Small bench analyzers or fixed equipment can also be used when a handheld device is not available—the goal is to collect the specimen and obtain the results in a very short period of time at or near the location of the patient so that the treatment plan can be adjusted as necessary before the patient leaves. Cheaper, faster, and smarter POCT devices have increased the use of POCT approaches by making it cost-effective for many diseases, such as diabetes, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and acute coronary syndrome. Additionally, it is very desirable to measure various analytes simultaneously in the same specimen, allowing a rapid, low-cost, and reliable quantification. Therefore, multiplexed point-of-care testing (xPOCT) has become more important for medical diagnostics in the last decade. Many point-of-care test systems are realized as easy-to-use membrane-based test strips, often enclosed by a plastic test cassette. This concept often is realized in test systems for detecting pathogens. Very recently such test systems for rheumatology diagnostics have been developed, too. These tests require only a single drop of whole blood, urine or saliva, and they can be performed and interpreted by any general physician within minutes.....

    I know the general rule is if you eat <25g carbs a day you should be in ketosis but I've also heard certain sweeteners can throw you out.

    You don't need keto sticks period. Some people have negative reactions to some foods. If too much of a particular food leaves you with carb cravings, or with stomach troubles, or changes in mood or sleep, that's likely a food sensitivity issues. It doesn't mean you've stopped making or burning ketones.
    You can get a blood ketone meter and spend $2 or $3 per test strip, unless you have a specific medical condition to address, that's a lot of money to prove what you already know.

How To Know If You Are In Ketosis.

Well i am sure there is another post like this, because i read it before, but i dont remeber exactly what it said and I cant find it. The quesiton is just as the title says, how can i know if i am in ketosis or not? I have been reading and the people says that at the second day, or thirth day or X day they get in to ketosis, but how they know that? If you have never been in Ketosis buy some keto sticks. You can pick them up at most drug stores in the US and Canada. Ask the pharmisist if you can't find them on the shelf. Usually they will be with diabetic supplies. Lots of people will say not to waist your money but they are cheap and I get an instant gratification when I see the test strip turn color. Besides, it is always nice to see evidence that your effort is paying off. -odd metalic taste in your mouth and bad breath. - I also get cotton mouth (dry mouth and really foamy saliva).     I'm just wondering if there are ways to tell if you're in Ketosis without using the strips. We live in the Outback in Australia in a small town and I'm not sure I would be able to find them here. And to be honest, I really don't feel like checking. I feel that I finally found a WOE that works for me and I'm feeling great and don't want to focus too much on that aspect. So I'm wondering if there are signs to tell me.
    I'm finishing up my 3rd day of induction and to be honest, it's been pretty easy for me. I haven't really had any bad side effects and after supper I have no urges or cravings to eat anything (and no urges for carbs during the day). I have ALWAYS had a snack before bed my whole life, but I've really had no interest.
    I just want to make sure I'm doing this right. If you go to my journal you can check out my menu for today if you'd like to see what I'm eating. And I have lost a few pounds.

    As for ketosis, I can tell without strips because I sometimes get an odd tinny taste in my mouth, I don't feel hungry or sluggish or headachey at all, and most convincing of all (for me) is that my pee smells almost of acetone... Sometimes it looks almost greenish too but that could be because of the supplements I'm taking (or all the green veggies I'm eating, which I never used to! )
    Of course, the best sign that you're in ketosis/lipolysis is that you're losing weight!

    Hi, I never know if I am in ketosis or not since I don’t have ketosis strips. I am losing weight very slow with crazy ups and downs, mostly because of my water retention.
    I am wondering is there are any physical signs of being in ketosis? Is it possible to feel it?

    Yes there are ways to tell if you are in ketosis. You may, or may not have any or all of the signs, but here are some signs:
    Thirst
    metallic or sweet taste in the mouth
    bad breath that can be hard to get rid of
    stronger smelling urine
    stronger body odor
    best of all.....lack of appetite
